I'm just getting started in climbing and have mostly been bouldering. I tried doing some bouldering in an area of J tree called jumbo rock and really didn't like the rock quality compared to my local spot santee boulders. The J tree rock really tore up my finger tips ande was kind of crumbly. Was I in the wrong area of J tree.?Next time I go up there where should I go to boulder and top rope? Thanks for any help.

I don't know about that one area in particular, but JTree in general is very sharp rock. You fingertips, knees, elbows, and just about any body part that happens to bump the rock, will get cut up. As will climbing shoes and the possibly the seat of your pants. That being said...the climbing is amazing and scenery can't be beat.

your fingers are torn up??? welcome to J-Tree my friend. 'tis the nature of the beast there's great bouldering to be had in and around the hidden valley area. may I suggest; however, that you consider socializing with the local climbers while in J-Tree...get to know the areas by climbing with these folks. i think you'll find it much more enjoyable enjoy

uhm, yeah, Jumbo is pretty much a last resort camping spot for climbers since ther isn't much climbing right by and as you said, the rock is crumbly (because no one really climbs there). It's kind of a vicious circle that you'll find a lot in J-Tree, where climbs that are rarely done are grainier than others, so few people climb them and so on.

The variable rock quality in Joshua Tree isn't only related to climber traffic. Jumbo Rocks is some of the grainiest and least pleasant. There are a few areas around Jumbo with great rock (Conan's Corridor, Zebra Dihedrals...) but I couldn't tell you about the bouldering there.

Not really a dumb question, I'd say. You just happened to sample an area known for particularly poor rock. Get yourself one of the bouldering guide books and try again. I'm sure you'll think it's worthwhile.

Joshua Tree rock is narly. Your hands get ripped up. Wait till you start climbing cracks and jamming your hands into them, thats when it gets brutal

A few of us have taken to giving a 'gravel storm' rating to describe the potential of getting a grain in your eye while spotting.

Jumbo rocks is Great for bouldering. That is where I have a really cool choss circut that I boulder at night with a few friends. We have a high ball layback, a nice grainy off-hands crack, offwith problem, and a few not super grainy but fun face problems. Be sure to leave the pad at the camp site and to wear your street shoes for the proper rating and challenge! With the Moon shining brightly and all, look for us out there this weekend. And at night of course. :D It is the area to the right of the jumbo rocks entrance. Soulsurfer a.k.a. Choss warrior!
