My Gore pants finally are giving it up and I was thinking about switching to a soft-shell pant or bib. Any recommendations on brand? Mostly for winter alpinism and moderate ice. I like full zips and a crotch gusset, with room for my Earl Campbell-like thighs.

Thanks!

I'd say that the top makers of soft shell pants right now are Arcteryx, Mammut and Ibex, in that order. You could check out beyondfleece.com. They custom make gear for about the same price as the "name" brands.

Don't forget about Cloudveil. I have a pair of the symmetry pants and love them and I've heard that the ice flow bib is also good. I wear my symmetry pants out ice climbing all winter unless it's really drippy, then there's nothing better than good old gore tex...

Love my Mountain Hardwear Alchemy jacket and pants. ArcTeryx is legendary for their fit, finish, and performance. And Beyond Fleece has received some extrodinary reviews for their products, as well. They are notorious for their excellent value the customize-ability of their products.

Eastern Mountain Sports.
Scholler 400 pants and jackets. Insulated and non-insulated. Made with climbing in mind and inexpensive. ($120 regular pants, $160 insulated)

I like full zips
Methinks you'll find that you don't need full side zips with soft-shell pants. Since you basically put them on over your long underwear of choice, and they stay there. Lighter weight without the zips, too.

I have owned and used: BD Alpine pants, Mammut pants, EMS pants, Patagonia pants, all soft shells. These days I am down to one pair (they tend to die reluctantly), some Patagonia Super Guides. I really like these...
