Hey,

Does anyone have any beta on bouldering in the McDowells? Directions? Links for Topos? etc.

Thanks,
Steve

there is no concentration of problems. just drive / hike around and use your imagination. Its certainly not worth a trip for the bouldering alone, unless the rest of the phx urban choss has completely worn you out. If you are looking for a hike with the ocassional boulder thrown in, go for it.

this is one of the better problems, but don't get your hopes up. One in hundred (200?) boulders.

Their are also a few boulder problems around Little Granite Mountain. Their is a cool dynamic boulder problem on a dyke about 250 yards south-southeast of Toms Thumb. Go to Groom Creek for some good granite bouldering.

Thanks for the feedback (and the photo). We live near FLLW and Thompson Peak so the McDowells are in our backyard. Don't mind the hike / boulder idea. We'll have to check it out.

If you had to rate the metro area, is Pinnacle Peak or Camelback better for bouldering (haven't bouldered at either).

I did hear about the great bouldering at Groom Creek. We'll have to get up there next spring.

Thanks again,
Steve

Hmmm. Would you rather live in Afghanistan or Iraq?

Since you aren't allowed to leave the trail except to get the extablished climbing routes (99% trad) bouldering is for the most part zip at Pinnacle Peak. Lots of great trad routes on great granite.

Watch the rock at Camelback after a rain as it goes from soft to way-soft.
