I really hate the pictures from John long books. I wonder why he didn't put them in color ! Maybe for keeping the books at the lowest price. But still, It is difficult to see the details that may be interesting to see. B&W pictures but higher contrast would make things easier to see....

I guarantee you that it wasn't John's decision. The cost in using color photos is significantly larger, I'd imagine, because different paper would also have to be used.

If his books had color photos, you probably wouldn't like the price...

In reply to: that should be nice if some babes are in his pictures ! I think clear picture is important too, sometimes a picture can save a couple line of obscur explanation Hey, that chick with the braid in the turtleneck and old-skool Fires or whatever in the How to Rock Climb book is cute. But really. Full-color, high-quality paper for the inside pages would be expensive. And note that the photos are older, from the 80s or so...

I don't wish to comment on whether the pictures should BW or in color, but, as a publisher, I can state that with modern technology (including printing presses) the difference between color and BW is not very large, say $0.50, in printing costs for a 250 page book, which means about a $2.00 to $2.50 difference in retail cost. rob.calm

In addition the 4 color printing process is more expensive by its nature. When my publisher did the math on my current book it looked like the difference between color and B&W was going to be somewhere around $10 per copy when it goes to the retail shelf. This being the case we went with B&W on higher quality paper. which provides good quality photos and a lower price. peace.
