The relpies to this thread may turn out to be depressing, saddening, disheartening, pitiable, laughable, or just plain interesting, but I gotta know:

How much do most of your have invested in your gear?
This includes:
Trad Racks
Alpine gear
Sport Gear
Ice Gear
Climbing Schwag
Camping Stuff
Or anything else you poured your hard-earned cash into for the love of the sport.

After seeing the picture of Kate's rack posted by cracklover in the gallery, I began to wonder just how much we could really save if we had less expensive habits!

With draws, a grigri, atc, some lockers, and some webbing, I have probably spent $250 on sport climbing gear alone. It gets worse if rope, harness, shoes, etc. count.

Way too much...

Do I need to inclued skis/snowboards?

I really don't want to have to calculate that...I've taken calculus and I'm not sure that even that will help...

I have a '98 Toyota 4-Runner. The gear in it is worth 2x more than the vehicle.

Ok, I'll play. here's what I can think of, and approximately what I paid for it, off the top of my head. I am patient and got most of the stuff at least 25% off.

3 ropes--275
14 cams--420
12 slings--80
45 biners--220
ascender--50
grigri--70
6 pair shoes +2 resoles--450
helmet, used--5
harness--65
chalkbag--15
rope bag--25
1 etrier--25
2 cordelettes--7
8 draws--90
8 draws--gift
1 set nuts--60
2 hexes--free
ATC--12
Pad--80

Approx 1750.

That doesn't include several hundred bucks for bolts, post climbing feasts, and probably 12,000 of gas. Yikes!

Edited to add that this was money WELL spent, the return I've gotten from the good times as a result of this gear would justify just about anything.

**How much money is in your rack?**

Well, I do keep a keep a couple of quarters and bucks (for pay phones and food emergencies) in the small zippered compartment of my chalk bag, so technically I have less than $10 in my rack.

For everything else, there's MasterCard.

at last count, climbing gear & clothing was cresting about $6,000.00.

its prolly a few hundred more than that by now.

toss in camping gear and the like, and i would estimate another $1,000.00.

Because of pro deals I think my gear is worth more then I paid for it. That makes me feel a bit less guilty when I buy more gear.

I usually keep a $10 in my spare chalk bag. Comes in handy when hitching a ride back to the car, buying a burger after a climb, etc.

[Edit: Damn. Shorty beat me to it. Grrr....]

I'll play, but I'm sure that someone will easily top me.

Harnesses
Shoes
Trad & Sport gear
Rope
Pack

Aprox Total: $ 1650

Its hard to believe I've spent that much. It does all add up pretty quickly when you really get into it.

Lets See...

1 rope + 1 Short rope = $225
Harness + 3 pair shoes + chalkbag = $300
10 dog bone draws = $55 (sale at gear express)
10 Trad draws (1 sling and 2 biners) = $110
4 Aliens = $200
4 DMMs = $200
Wiregate biner for each cam (8) = $45
2 Sets of ABC Huevos = $100
Two wiregates for the nuts = $15
5 Trango regular lockers = $40
Daisy chain = $15
ATC + Biner = $25
Misc other = $50

*sigh* lets total now......

$1,380

To be honest I would of thought more, so I guess thats a good thing. But what scares me is that my trad rack is relatively small........

EDIT: I forgot camping gear, crash pad, etc. Eh, Im too lazy to count.

Met Rope Bag = 27
12 quicks = 102
9 various carabiners = 39
Various slings = 28

I console myself by telling myself how much I saved through gear deals at my school.

OK. The serious reply. All prices approximate, as I really don't recall what I spent for each item.

Set of BD Stoppers, 4-13: $60
Set of Metolius Astronut Mini stoppers: $45.
Mixed cams, incl. Trango and WC Friend, 11 total: $550.
Double of the first four Camp Tri-Cams: $70.
Four large Pear Lockers: $60.
Four small lockers: $60.
Twenty BD regular ovals: $100
Twenty BD Hotwires: $120.
Twenty BD off-set D non-lockers: $120.
Ten single shoulder slings: $50
Five 1.5 length slings: $30.
Five double slings: $35.
Twelve BD Positron draws: $60 (I got a deal at REI... 6 draws for $28.)
10.5mm PMI Double Dry 60m rope: $150
Harness: $50
Shoes, two pair: $160.
Plastic Ice boots: $300.
All purpose Mountaineering ice axe: $60
Trango Harpoon crampons: $120
Spare chalkbag with various anti-epic items: $25.
Various pieces of cordlette, 1" tube webbing, 9/16th webbing, etc.: $50

$2275, roughly.

Budget for this year is a pair of ice tools, 6 ice screws, and 6 screamers. So add another $650 in the next three months, and I'll be up to $2925.

Jeebus... three grand.

Suddenly, chess sounds like a good hobby.

About $1200 just on my my sports gear. I don' t even wanna think about the cost of the trad. rack that I'm slowly building. Yikes. Plus all the camping and backpacking equipment. When I'm finally finished (is there really an end?), it'll probably cost ahlf as much as my car!

I would estimate my climbing gear is near 2K. If you factor in things it takes to climb (other outdoor gear, tent...) I would add probably another 2K to that. So it cost me 4K to go climbing. :-)
