Scott Blunk certainly climbs that hard at 235lbs or so. Of course, he is also 6' 7" tall. Curt

In reply to: Steve Petro Not tall, heavy set climbs 14a No disrespect to Steve Petro because I'll never be a fraction of the climber he is, but saying that he's "not tall" is like calling Shaquille O'Neal "not short." I met him briefly at a trade show and I remember him being just plain short. He is built like a linebacker/brickshithouse. As such, I'd imagine he is nowhere near 200 pounds.

Definitely John Dunn. He eats pork pies and downs copious quantities of beer for training and still would outclimb anything that could ever imagine to climb. He is a machine, a huge granted but still a machine. He climbs grit too which is more the spectacular accomplishment.

In reply to: Hmmm.... what about someone less than 6'0'' My friend Esteban 'La Morsa' Degregoria is about 5'9" or maybe 5'10" and weighs in at around 200 lbs. He actually has a sort of pot belly. But he is one STRONG dude (La Morsa is Argentine for: the vice grips), excelling at roofs. I've personally seen him redpoint 12d/13a on his third try and I'm sure he's redpointed harder. He's also put up some way rad multi-pitch trad routes in the mid 5.12 range (for example in the Frey). It doesn't make any sense to me, but La Morsa is proof positive that chubbers can climb WAY hard. I only have this one really crappy picture of him working a V8 boulder problem in my backyard climbing area. It's such a bad picture, you can't see much, but check out the bulk in those arms, and if you look carefully you see the paunch, even though he's horizontal. http://www.celb.com.ar/...a%20en%20Asperix.jpg

In reply to: where is that photo exactly? Balcarce? Or near Los Gigantes? Balcarce on La Barrosa. A 10 minute walk from my house. The reason there's so much writing on the wall of the cave is because it overlooks the Juan Manuel Fangio racetrack. So people hang out there when there are car races. For the most part the bouldering/climbing areas on La Barrosa are fairly pristine.

People have been overstating John Dunne's size for years. Dale Goddard referred to him as being " as big as a sumo wrestler". I was expecting a fatso from his reputation. But he looked like a typical Midwestern US corn fed jock when I saw him in the Mid-90's. Marc B.

I've climbed above 12c at around 200 or so. Thank God there was a 5.4 to get me to the summit! Rob

John Dunne makes the "I'm too fat" excuse pretty useless... I wonder if they send him up some gnarly grit climb first to see if their 40 pieces of pro will hold when he falls...

Johny Dunes real isn't that over weight, and no where near 300lbs! Have a look at his web site, there are some recent photo's in there, he doesn't look that bad, http://www.johndunneclimbing.com/html/framesset.html Yes Gritstone is kickass :D Thought I 'd add that
