some locking biners (like 3-4)
about ten quickdraws...I personally like the ones w/ the wiregates for the rope end cause it makes it easier to clip to
http://www.omegapac.com/opfoqdsw.html
a set of slings of diff. lenghts (i.e. 2-48",2-36",2-24") for setting anchors
cordelette for equalizing
couple of biners...like 6-10
a good comprehensive book on knots, clipping techniques and setting diff. types of anchors

this should be enough to set up most sport climbs w/ anchors. You'll find out eventually that you'll need more gear as you go that would suit your needs.

i agree with that!

maybe you should add to your cart a helmet and a belay system...

Since you're going to need a partner to do this safely anyway, your best gear for your next few outings might be a variety of more-experienced partners. That way you can see a couple different systems (not that it varies much in sport climbing).

If you must have some gear for a holiday wish list, get some quickdraws. I agree with the recommendation of the wiregate draws. Depending where you climb, you will need at least 10 draws.

But to begin discussing anchoring, bailing or belaying, a more experienced partner will be way more valuable than the gear.

How 'bout a fuckin' helmet?!? That extra quickdraw on your harness doesn't do you any good if yer brain's leaking out yer head...

While all this stuff might be good to have if you're going to set up routes for the entire day, but if you are going to just do routes and then move on, you really only need 12-14 quickdraws, and maybe a couple of lockers for the anchors, although two opposing quickdraws will work well. A helmet is definitely a good idea especially for new leaders because you might have a harder time with remembering to keep your leg from under the rope. A book is also a good idea, but if you can find an experienced climber to give you help that's much better. In my experience, sport climbing doesn't really make you think too much about how to set up anchors, but Rumney might be set up better than other areas.

I would add a belay device and a pack of some sort to tote all the shiny new stuff around in.

i appreciate all the help. i go to school in Boone, so there are plenty of guys i can go climbing with and i intend to very soon. i was just wondering what i should get to kind of get me started, because i have experienced friends who don't own these things, so me having them would make it easier to get on the rock instead of making phone calls to borrow gear. thanks again for all the help. you guys are the junk! (yes its a good thing)

yeah, that's most of what you'd want. Keep this helmet in mind, too! (pun intended). Really, helmet, helmet, helmet!!!

I'd be willing to bet you could find all the gear you need(including your helmet) for less if you shopped around for the individual stuff (eBay is great for this, also gearexpress.com).

heres approx what you need:

1 locker (more if you need to fix anchors, go with at least 4 then, plus at elast two slings/runners)
1 belay device (its a good idea to have a backup)
10+ quickdraws (i really love wiregates and its nice to have some mixed lengths)
1 at least 60m rope, for a beginner i reccomend staying above 10mm diameter
1 experienced partner

all that plus a helmet, personally i had 14 QD's, (nice to have a few extras in case you drop one in desperate clip). somehow though now I"ve only got 9...dammit.... and a 10.5mm rope 60m duo-dess (the weave of the sheath changes at the half way point) so the chance mucking things up on rappel/lower is reduced. 10 years later and my rope is still duodess.
