Latest favorite back handed compliment

I was out for dinner with a girlfriend last night and carded for a glass of wine. The waiter says: "Wow! You look good for your age!"

Well, I hadn't realized it myself yet, but I guess I am over the hill. Ah-well.

for the record, the waiter was older than I am and he did not look good for his age.

Mine - a year or so ago I went to buy a pair of jeans at the Levi's store. I made a squeal when I tried on a pair of jeans as they were a perfect fit. So, when I went up to purchase and handed the credit card over (on the back I wrote, please ask for ID) with my id - the kid says to me, oh wow, I hope I look as good as you when I am your age and then comments on the size of the jeans (size 1 or 2 - but this is Levi's and size is so subjective to its maker)...

lol

I've also been told a liar whilst sitting at a bus stop w/ a notebook in hand. Dude was all, you're lying, you're not old enough to work and look you have your school books w/ you...

lol

it's alllll good...

and yes, i am being vain...

OK take it from a guy who has a knack for complimenting people and have them think it is an insult -

the guy was simply trying to tell you look good -
his brain just didn't work quick enough -
Simply take it as him telling you you look good regardless of your age!

so smile!

Thanks - I did say thank you very politely. And then me and my girlfriend had a laugh about it later.

in college i befriended a handful of exchange (like) students. my background is in speech communication. i really enjoyed conversing with those learning esl; moreso, i spent time helping w/ homework assignments, etc.

so my nextdoor dormmate's roommate was a freak... hard to explain but anyone who showers w/ their clothes on... or snakes their roommates' bedding and folds their (the roomate's that is) dirty u nderware and places it back into the drawers....

anyhoo - my old friend said, "do you think jen is pretty." her response, "no she is not pretty; but i like her lipstick." needless to say, i didn't help her w/ her homework/conversationals any longer... ha!

You climb well,... for a girl.

You're pretty strong,... for a girl.

The right answer: No
The wrong answer: No, your ass doesn't look big in that dress.

You're not as dumb as I thought.

And from an escalating e-mail exchange. (I know it seems out of character for me to be involved in a heated debate):

I know that I am reaching a bit far, but if I can compliment you for anything, it is that we have come to this point without your yet resorting to personal affront and incivility.

This is from work last fall.

My assistant comes to my cube smiling from ear to ear and hands me a project she's been working on. I thank her and return to my work. 20 seconds later I hear her clear her throat and see that shes standing there expectantly. I stop what I am working and immediately flip through the pages of presentation.

After a couple of minutes of trying to figure out what the hell she did to the information I was looking for, I turn to her and say "this is an excellent presentation you should be very proud, now perhaps you could get me the one I asked for."

Needless to say we had a little tension that day.

deja vu!!!!

The best one i've had lately was at the crags. I was climbing with a male friend and we picked up an aquaintence of his. This kid was about 17 years old. When he found out how old i was he said, "wow you climb well..................for someone who's old like my mom!

I was hanging out and talking with my roommate, a particularly social guy.

So he was lamenting about how he's been single for awhile, and he needed to meet people. I joined in his complaining, saying that I was getting sick of being single and that we should go out and meet people.

He then said, "But you're used to not having anyone, it's weird for me!"

*blink blink*

Ummm...thanks.

Said by me to a particularly rotund lady behind the counter of a department store. "When is your baby due", reply by her, "I`m not having one". Where is a rock to crawl under thought I.

i over heard this, doesn't really apply but i think it's funny. My friends girlfriend works at a department store. I was hanging out with my friend when she comes in, slams the door and obiviously mad shouts, "I had the biggest ass in the store today!" my quick (or slow) witted friend deadpans "what, did you guys have a contest?"

Ok, I definitely think I'm going to win this one.

so I swing dance, right? pretty frequently. anyways, my dance partner and I were out at the club where we usually go to dance to see this band play, and were dancing cause it was rockabilly with a good beat. we cut some aeriels; we danced well.

anyways, after the show was over, mind you a lot of people were dancing, this gentleman, prolly about mid-40's, comes up to me.

"Are you guys professional dancers?" he asks.

"No," I said, and kind of laughed, because I wasn't at the time.

"Oh, well, are you in school?"

"Yes, we go to _________."

"Are you a performing arts major or something?" he asks. I'm not sure at this point what he's digging for.

"No," I reply, "I am a Genetics major."

"Oh, wow," he managed to get out between blinks. "Ya know, you don't *look* like a big-brained girl."

yeah. In repeating this to my dance instructor later, he said "yeah, you dont look like you could kick him in balls, either, do you?" I laughed and laughed.

I once commented to my (now ex) girlfriend that I thought her mom looked quite good for early 40s.

"Just how old do you think my mom is?"
-at this point I had that wierd sinking feeling in my stomach-
"43...maybe..."
"She's 54 next july"
"Oh, awesome"

Heh!

A friend of mine gained 50 lbs during her pregnancy (and she was quite small before). Anyway, me and another friend met her in the city one day and chatted for a while. A while later my friend commented
"Wow, she's really big! When's the baby due?"
"She had it 6 weeks ago..."
