Im interested in the inventor of big bros so I can track down the patent.

Infact the patent number would be even better. (the patent search engine is a dog)

Probably not helpful, but I seem to remember someone (Paul Piana or Todd Skinner at a slide show?) saying that they were invented by a engineering student at Colorado State University who sold the rights to Trango.

Gutted, his name isn't on the patent.

Big Bros used to be sold by (get this) Mountain Hardwear! I dunno when Craig took the design to Trango- maybe early 90s?

This is kinda funny!

Somebody asks who invented it.

Then somebody answers it properly.

Then...somebody says I'm not sure, but I think this is what happened

Then somebody answers it properly again...with a website link!!!

Then somebody, again, says I'm not sure, but I think this is what happened.

Once again  ...Craig Luebben invented the Big Bro! http://www.craigluebben.com/gear/ If interested in the patent holder, I'm guessing it's either Craig or the company that he may have sold it to. My guess would be Trango.

I'm not meaning to come off as a wise ass, but those who read all of the replies in sequence can, I'm sure, find the humor in this!

You have the right to be a wise ass here. It's not like there were that many posts to read through.

US Patent 4765574 (Inventor: Michael D. Thomas) issued August 23, 1988. However, this patent is restricted to a construction having a pivoting anchoring point at the end. Presumably, there is no modern patent for the basic construction of the Big Bro.

A similar threaded device for wide crack protection, named "Desmaison screw" was made and sold in France more than 30 years ago. That device had no quick-lock or release; you had to turn the threads all the way by turning a middle section.

It seems that Craig Luebben has no patents in his own name, and TRANGO has only patents (in their name) for their belay device similar to the Grigri.
