Sustainability and aggies.

I recently queried my roommate as to why she doesn't ever do dishes. It turns out she's been eating on paper plates this entire time she's lived with me. She postures herself as a responsible eco-friendly individual, but I can't even fathom doing this. She's a farm girl to some degree. Drives a pick up truck with pictures of roping cattle and ducks unlimited stickers, you know how it is.

I also teach sustainability to my students, and I always find the ag students are far less receptive to the principals of organic farming, etc, than non-ag students.

So what is going on? Do those who live closer to the earth know that she can sustain us the way we keep up, or do they just want to do what they know? I have a hard time believing that students involved in agricultural education would be so close-minded to what I think is such an advanced farming and eco-friendly way of life - but I'm not the one putting it into practice.

What do you think?

Have you ever tried growing anything on a large scale? Your own food perhaps?

Try it and you'll soon learn there really is, "better living thru chemistry".
