The Wingers are the authors of several guidebooks, including "The Trad Guide to Joshua Tree - 60 Favorite Climbs from 5.5 to 5.9." Charlie has also written an autobiography with highlights from over 35 years of mountaineering called "Two Shadows." Charlie Winger first visited Joshua Tree along with a group of climbing friends from the Colorado Mountain Club in the late 1980s. After a week-long venture filled with thrills, challenges, defeats, sand-bagging, raw fingertips, stinky climbing shoes, laughs, and beer, he was hooked. He returned the following spring, then again with neophyte Diane a month later, offering her the dubious thrill of an introduction to friction climbing (“There aren’t any holds!” “Sure there are. Put your foot on that shadow there.”) The bug had struck again. The Wingers began a tradition of scheduling one- or two-week J-Tree trips every spring; they then discovered the joys of climbing in the fall, and even tossed in some trips in between. They like to stay in shape for their Joshua Tree trips by climbing local crags in their native Colorado.
