Review 5 out of 5 stars

Perhaps the most versatile belay device. I've been using this since 1997. On fat, fury gym ropes, use low friction mode and it'll provide adequate friction and a smoothe descent. For protecting a heavier leader or using smaller ropes, it locks off very positively. Some times the "jaws" provides a jerky descent on less than pristine ropes. If I had to take one device with me, this would be it. A close second would be the atc XP.

I got this device for my girlfriend, who belays a heavier partner (me) and it seems to work really well. I guess it is a good device for begginers (like us), it feels really safe. I've used it to rappel and my 10.5mm runs very slow on either side of the device.

Been using the Jaws for just about two years now and hav not had a single issue with it. I'm a heavy guy, 240 lbs., and everyone who has ever belayed me using the jaws side appreciates the extra bite. I also appreciate the grip for myself when on rappel. Yet, it still releases easily and feeds rope smoothly when asked.

Overall for the weight and functionality I would say it doesn't miss a trick

This is the worst of the six tube-style belay devices I am familiar with. As mentioned, locking off is easy...especially when you don't want to. With either the high or low friction mode, there seem to be two speeds--too fast or too slow. I use this device on average for 5 hours a week and would not recommend it to anyone.

this device locks off so easy yo hardly need to add pressure to the rope in a downward motion at all. withe heavyer guys it is a charm and forget that arm stress this relives the need to pull hard on the rope
