The Direct on Half Dome is a fine, very trad, route that is a less crowded alternative to the Regular route. It has nicer ledges but nastier rock quality. Some leadouts too!Here's Roger L cleaning a pitch on the first day read the trip report.

Dan Dingle (who did Crest Jewel's first ascent with Mike Lucero) and Steve Swann just put up a Direct Start to Crest Jewel on June 27,2002. Mark Albosta and I did the second ascent a couple weeks later. Five new pitches 5.8, 10a,10d,5.9 and 10a read the trip report. For the Topo and Route Beta.

Brett Kassell took this shot of me on the second pitch of Zodiac. Years ago folks sometimes fell on this pitch as their cams chewed through poor rock (or bird crap?) on the inside of the crack. Now it seems cleaner in there! read the trip report.

I took this photo of a lenticular Cloud over Machupuchare in 1986 on my first Nepal trek. Climbing on this peak is not allowed as it is sacred to the locals. It's also known as "fishtail peak.' see more Himalaya shots on my page here.

Here's a composite shot of Gavin M. starting a traverse high on the East Buttress of Middle Cathedral. There has been some rockfall lately on the descent in Cathedral Chimney. This picture was taken by partner Doug F. of me starting the airy traverse high on the East Buttress of El Cap. This is a great route that I have taken many friends up and also soloed numerous times, using a rope on the harder pitches.
