Big gun boulderingI found this gun to have a boulder on whilst visiting Noumea in New Caledonia. A few of the old people in our tour group all thought I was crazy and I would fall. Pppffft, what would they know.

Coral reef boulderingMe Tarzan, ugggh. See all those aerial roots, those all belong to one tree. These large fig trees grow to massive proportions. I stumbled on this one during a small exploration whilst checking out some coral reef bouldering.

Coral reef boulderingHere is an example of how the coral reef is uplifted some 20 or so feet out of the water. The wave action then undercuts the reef to create some awesome roof bouldering action. High tide is the best time to boulder though as the landings at low tide are directly on to a coral reef bench.

Coral reef boulderingDon`t let the water below me fool you, it is not very deep due to the coral reef coming quite close to the surface. This exposed uplifted section of ancient coral reef on the Isle of Pines in New Caledonia seemed like a good idea to have a boulder on. The limestone was very sharp but extremely textured. Quite different than anything else I have ever climbed.

Spicers to Teviot 3 day walk 29Looking out on the Steamship Range. This was named after the arrangement of peaks shown. There is Mt. Steamer, The Mast, The Funnel, The Prow and The Stern. Funnily enough when viewed from a lookout that overlooks this range it actually does look like a steamship.

Spicers to Teviot 3 day walk 7Looking back towards Spicers Peak. The curios foiage in the foreground are what are known as blackboys or xanthorrhea or grasstrees. They shoot up a huge long flower spike, that coupled with their black trunks and grass skirts for leaves reminded the early settlers of aborigines standing with their spears hence the name blackboys.
