So i was shooting the shit with a gym owner here in SC and i brought up the subject of a free standing boulder. I know that Entreprise builds their scaffold from pipe connected to structural ibeams for their walls. So i tried looking online for some affordable pipe as an alternative to wood to build the structure and all i found was super high prices.
anybody got any good sources for angle iron or scaffolding pipe thats affordable? Or is it just wish-full thinking that its going to be as cheap as wood.

Steel is going to be far more expensive. Treated 4x4 posts cemented in will be plenty strong and last a very long time. If you're dead set on steel contact your local steel recycler yard and see if they'll sell to you by the pound. I would stick with lumber. Steel is going go rust and be harder to mount to.

Witt he right shape on the foundation, you could build the entire boulder from wood. A 2 by 6 frame with nice cross braces would be plenty strong.
Interestingly, here in Indonesia, my wall was cheaper to build with a steel frame versus wood.

yeah framing with wood isnt a problem, i was just thinking that steel was only slightly more expensive than wood, but you would need less per structure and it would be cheaper overall...apparently not here in the states.
