Hi folks,
I have a bit of an odd question....
I bought a new climbing rope from a reputable store in Australia about 8 or 9 years ago (10mm*60m I think). I used the rope for about a year for outdoor sport climbing, top roping and lead. The rope never took a fall ( I didnt do very hard climbs), apart from letting go of the rock while top roping resulting in only gradual stretch.
I always looked after my rope, making sure it ran through good gear, and since then the rope has stayed in its bag tucked away in the cupboard.
My question is this....my profession is, I'm a magician. At my next stage show, there is an illusion where the performer disappears on stage only to reappear (seemingly moments later) trussed upside down and being lowered down on to the stage from above.
I intended to use my climbing rope for the lowering process, I thought I would double rope for added safety, and of course make sure all anchor points are as safe as possible.
Do you guys think this sounds ok? Or should I be investing in a new rope? Also, is it ok to mark a line on a climbing rope with a permanant ink pen?

That rope should be fine for that as long as it's been stored properly and hasn't been exposed to any harsh chemicals.

Hello,
Thankyou for your reply, the next show isnt until May 17th, but I can certainly send you a video.
Also, is marking a climbing rope with a permanant marking pen ( a sharpie) ok?

IŽd ask a theatre rigger what the OSHA rules say about using an old, unidentified rope in a professional capacity personally!
