About Mt Kosciuszko:

This has the dubious claim of Australia's highest mountain at 2229m altitude. In summer it is an easy 5km walk across tundra - in winter it is somewhat long snow plod across some spectaculer country. The 'peak' is easily climbable in a day (8-10hrs return) if the weather is good. The easist way to do it is on skis - a well marked trail leads almost to the summit with only the last 200m being too steep. You won't need crampons, ice axe for this section (if the weather is good!). In bad weather navigation can be difficult and it can get to -15'C so be prepared! How to get there - Drive 5-6 hours from Sydney to the NSW skifields. Catch the ski tube train to Perisher Blue resort (30mins). Travel via oversnow transport (a big tank looking snow truck!) which leaves Perisher to the final destination of Charlettes PAss ski resort. Put on the skis/snowshoes and follow the well marked trail to the summit. You may have to deal with water crossings across semi frozen rivers if it has been raining.
