About Megas Lakos (the Great Pit):

Megas Lakos is one of the most popular destinations among the climbers of Thessaloniki and Larissa. One of the characteristics of the sector is climbing on pockets, which requires balance on a vertical rock, but there is also a large cave on the right side of the sector that offers really difficult routes. The sector is suitable for clibing mainly during the winter, as the sun hitds the rocks at around 13:00 pm. You can climb during the summer, too, but only very early in the morning. You can camp in the flat area in front of the large cave. An important advantage of the sector is the existance of fountains with fresh water. Number of routes: 40. Grade range: 5c - 8a/8a+.
Approach: From Thessaloniki to Tempi, by the time you pass the bridge on your left, turn towards Stomio. Continue for about 500m and on your right you will see some road works. Turn there, and you can ask the workers for the safest place to park your car. It is likely to advise you to go further, close to the building with the water pump. You can park there, and walk by the flume towards the mountain. After 5-10 min, you will see uphigh and slightly leftwards an impressive rock block; this is the new climbing sector of Megas Lakos. The old sector is on your right, in the middle of the upway. To be honest, it is a bit difficult to "discover" the path that leads you there. However, even if you don't find it, you will certainly feel by experience that you find yourself at about the height of the sector and you will turn correctly.
