About Iztacchihuatl:
Ixta is a complicated 17,300' volcano that makes a great acclimitazation climb for Orizaba. There are a few permanent glaciers, though late in the dry season it can be climbed without an axe or crampons. A permit is necessary to enter the Park. If coming from Amecameca, the office is in a blue building next to the church near the town square. The cost is 10 pesos per person per day, and if you don't have the permit you will be turned back by the military well below the Paso de Cortes. |

Directions: | The standard approach is from the Paso de Cortes reached from Amecameca - there are other less used approaches to other parts of the mountain. Flag down a taxi after getting a permit in Amecameca and ask to be taken to La Joya. La Joya is the end of the road and accessible by passenger cars - do not be suckered into letting the driver stop early. If you aren't climbing on a weekend, arranging for a return trip is a good idea as well. |
