About Split Mountain:

One of the California fourteeners, Split Mountain stands at 14058 ft. Several routes from technical ice climbing up chutes (The Southern & South Eastern sides) to easier technical ice climbs and Class 2-3 ascents (The Northern and North Eastern sides).
Nearest town or city: Big Pine
Directions: This is one of the most inaccessible of the 14ers. For the easier of two routes take 395 to South Fish Springs road. Turn West and follow the signs to Tinemaha Campgrounds. Take the road through the campground and follow it past the gravel pit. Continue until you hit a fork in the road and follow it north around a hill where it dead-ends into another gravel pit. You will see a light truck track on your west side about 100 yards before the dead-end. The track follows parallel to a fencing that runs East to West. Follow this track directly west (Towards the mountains) until you junction into McMurray Meadows road. Turn South and follow the road to the Trailhead for Red Lake/Red Mountain Creek. Once at the parking area follow the small road a little to the North until it hits the trail into Split Mountain. The hike to base camp at Red Lake is about 5.5 Miles on a slightly overgrown trail. If you don't think you are on the trail... then you aren't. The more difficult drive in calls for turning in Big Pine and taking McMurray Meadows road over a couple of streams, a 4 wheel drive with clearance is a must if you take this second route.
