About The Fortress of Solitude:
| Talk about big. This impressive limestone cliff has been described as the future of North American sport climbing. Home of Kryptonite, Tommy Caldwell's sick 5.14c/d climb. Just driving up the road to see this thing from a distance is worth it. Or, the 1 hour hike to the base will humble any die hard climber. |
| Nearest town or city: | New Castle |
| Directions: | From I-70 take the New Castle exit (#105), go right, and then straight through the intersection. Follow this street through residential areas until a T intersection where you take a right on to CR 245. Head out of town. Take a right on Main Elk Creek and drive several miles. Immediately following a sharp right corner there is a small turnout at a trailhead with a sign for "Clinetop Bighorn Sheep." Hike up the trail and take a right at the fork. After 30-45 minutes hike there is a small trail on the left marked with a cairn. This trail takes you to the Fortress although you can't see it from where you turn on to the trail. |
