About Section 13:

Section 13 is in the North Shore No Chalk Zone and is an anthorosite bluff with arguably the best inland views of the North Shore area. Climbs are around 60 feet in height and very abrasive; consider good padding for rope, slings, and webbing that may come into contact with the rock. The area is on Lake County land and open to hunters in the fall. Wear blaze orange (or at least bright colors) after Labor Day. In an emergency, dial 911. The closest public phones are in Finland (west 5 miles on Co. Rd. 6) and at the Tettegouche Rest Area on Hwy. 61 (approx. 9 miles). Camping is available at the Tettegouche State Park (reservations suggested), Eckbeck Campground and Finland Campground and also numerous spots in Silver Bay. Allow 30 to 40 minutes for the approach hike from the parking area.
Nearest town or city: Little Marias / Finland
Directions: Take Hwy. 61 north (northeast) of Duluth, through Two Harbors and Silver Bay to Little Marais and take a left (west) on Lake County Road 6. Go a little over a mile and park in the Superior Hiking Trail parking lot (old gravel pit). From the parking lot, hike west on the road for a hundred yards or so to the Superior Hiking Trail trailhead northbound (do NOT park here, you will be towed). Hike north on level ground then climbing. Come to an initial "summit" and decend again, passing a spur trail then climbing agian. The incredible view will signal that you're "there". A lot of the routes start climbing from a narrow ledge, 60' or so below the top. Fixing a line down to the ledge can be helpful. The trees on the ledge are NOT safe belay anchors. Belaying from the top is probably most comfortable if top-roping. Climbs in this area are broken down into "sections" that do not exist in the guide; done here for house keeping puroposes.
