East Face
About East Face:
Chocorua has an eastern face readily seen from high on the Piper, Carter Ledge and Middle Sister trails. There are many hikers in the area, but climbers will be on their own. The upper reaches of the East Face is peppered with 1 pitch faces and some at 2 pitches. Up to 5.7 to date. Harder slabs evident and some steep faces with blocky roofs below main summit. Minimum approach time is 2.5 hours and bushwhacks of 15 to 45 minutes mandatory to reach known routes. |
Approach: | Piper Trail for the North end of the East Face and excellent overnight camping at Camp Penacook Shelter w/2 tent platform & privvy. Strenuous bushwack to No EF climbs, beta available. Or, take the Liberty Trail for the South end of the East Face and the Jim Liberty Cabin. Bushwhack or walk ups to So EF climbing, obvious. Better water at Penacook, Liberty Cabin often smells bad. |
