Really loved this trip report; thanks for posting. The photos and details are both exciting and extremely helpful. Looks like you had a great time.

I'm a newbie to climbing, and was shocked to see the rungs embedded in the rock. Is this common? Or is this a specific type of sport climbing?

Itís not sport climbing, itís via ferrata. Itís very rare in the USA, more common in Europe. There are only four via ferrata lines between the USA and Mexico that I know of. Itís more of an adventure thing then actual climbing, simmilar to aid.

Let's hope that the number stays at 4. How can you call that an adventure? There are ladders up the whole damn mountain! And "similar to aid?" You have obviously never been aid climbing my friend.

If they Via Ferrata El Cap I would tourist in a hearbeat.
Half Dome has a via ferrata line that runs up the side of it. Its one of four in the USA. However I think most people skip the PPE as it seems to be rather easy.
