The last two days have been good ones, as I've watched one near perfect movie and one flawless movie all but back to back.

Saw Antichrist (it's on Netflix instant watch) Wed. night and pretty much had my hair blown back. It's definitely arthouse fare with a strong surrealist bent but what makes it stand out IMO, is the production quality and the performances. Everyone involved was at the very top of their game, especially Gainsbourg who is inthralling. Never has such an unrelenting bombardment of harrowing and brutal imagery been so, so beautiful.

The second was Haneke's The White Ribbon. I think it's a new highwater mark for him, one that comes in well above The Piano Teacher and Funny Games. The real difference here is the maturity in craftsmanship. Some artists are a bit scattershot through out their careers and others continually evolve and yet others doggedly refine their style until a day comes when you get pure essence. The latter, in many ways, is Haneke and The White Ribbon. It's at the top of my list for best of the year for sure.
