pyramid wrote: I find it hilarious that the AMGA guide comes up with this huge dissertation to defend their position, these guides are attempting to make their work seem complicated with fancy terminology and create confusion, much like lawyers and doctors have done to their professions. Thus creating a need for their services. I in fact know and have known past presidents of the AMGA and we have discussed the policies of the AMGA for years. The AMGA makes money by signing up people to take their courses, it is in their immediate interests to have loads of students paying huge prices. Soon many 'guides' will not be able to find work because there will be a glut of guides in this country, seems like everybody is a guide these days. BINGO You nailed it far better than I. One of my principal complaints for years has been the stranglehold the AMGA has had on the industry, not too mention the massive conflict of interest. Well put. Thank you for making my point in a far more concise manner than I could muster. One other point. The AMGA has become nothing more than a guide school with a choke hold on the land managers. Period. And boy do their minions walk in lockstep with their "philosophy". This is the very reason I quit Search and Rescue. We went from a team of climbers, to the NASAR SAR TECH 2 (or whatever). Suddenly I was having to certify people who were overweight, out of shape, and had zero experience on the rock. But, as long as they could tie a knot or two, rig a simple system, I had to tie in with them on technical rescues. No thanks.
