I am working on a Geography Project and would appreciate your input. I am looking to map out the TOP climbing areas in all 50 states. I understand that with some states this will be harder than others. But please don't neglect to answer for some of the more obscure states like Florida, Nebraska, etc.

Please indulge me with your opinion on the following questions:

(1) US State you live in or climb in most often.

(2) Your Top 1 - 3 technical climbing areas (please indicate dominate style i.e. Trad, Sport, Boulder) Aid, Alpine, and Ice are not needed.

(3) Why you feel these are the top areas of the state.

Thank you for your time and input

Trad and sport - Wichita mountains in the wichitas National Wildlife Refuge. Some people will argue for quartz mountain but I personally like the wichitas. More rock, more diversity in climbs, better protection. I love the views also. Meer's Market has the best burgers in the state located just outside the park!

bouldering - Chandler Park. It's got history, it's got it's own unique style, and it's located in a major metro area. The first v12 that was climbed in North America is in Chandler (the North American) Some people hate it cause it's polished but it'll make your fingers strong as hell!

Rad climbing.
The faces on Mt Rushmore.

Good, solid top anchors and you'll even get a ride into town, possibly before you top out.

Red Rock- top destination for all types of climbing.

Mt Charleston, known for sport climbing.

Nothing major after that- everything else is pretty small.

Florida! I would ignore the post for obvious reasons, but you did want 50 responses...

The landfill on the north side of Jacksonville gives you a decent class 3 scramble, but it's so chossy!

Still, you can sometimes find an old Twinky or something.

There is a site that lists the highest 50 "mountains" in Florida. It is worded as if it is about Colorado...

http://www.mountainzone.com/...ghest-peaks.asp?s=FL

This same site may have everything you need for other states.

Since I'm originally from Oregon but now live in Washington I can answer for both.

Oregon
1. Smith-Sport
2. Carver-Bouldering
3. Broughton-Trad/Sport/Mixed

Washington
1. Leavenworth-Trad/Bouldering/Sport
2. Index-Trad
3. North Bend-Sport

Well, it is a bit out of date, at least in terms of development levels.

North Carolina

I was going to do a list, but I couldn't stop and ended up with 6 areas. If I had to narrow it to two, I'd say Laurel Knob is the destination in NC with Linville Gorge a close second.

LK has been a secret for decades and it was actually illegal to climb there during most of it's early development. Recently the CCC made an unprecedented move and PURCHASED the cliff! Amazing work on the access front and a very cool history make this place intriguing.

Then there's the climbing. It's the biggest face (1000ft) east of the Mississippi and it has dozens and dozens of routes at all grades.

I think Linville Gorge is the centerpiece of the state for climbing and many activities. It is probably the wildest area of it's size in this part of the country and there is a lot of adventure to be had. Hundreds of climbs at all grades throughout the Gorge, mostly from the same access point. Loads of potential for new exploration as well. One of the most beautiful areas that I've ever climbed.

Nearly all of the climbing areas in NC could be on this list. Besides great climbing, the local communities and the ethics that are upheld make the areas all wonderful.

WV probably has two worth noting here: Seneca Rock and the New River Gorge, which includes the Meadow and Gauley Gorges. Seneca is mostly a trad destination. I include it because it's where a lot of regional folks really learned to climb in an adventurous environment. It has a long, storied history and a reputation that intimidates, and yet still draws people in droves from the surrounding major metro areas. The New is tops for single-pitch trad and sport, which you can often find living together side by side on the same crag in perfect harmony. The outstanding rock quality, variety and technical nature of much of the climbing here don't hurt either. The shear quantity of starred classics is almost overwhelming and there's still plenty of high-quality potential for those who want to explore off the beaten path.

I've often said that the NRG is also the top bouldering area in the region... if people only realized it. (I'll reluctantly stop shy of calling it potentially the best on the entire east coast.) Some folks consider the high-gorge boulders to be too featured to support mass hard bouldering, but the river-side boulders are another story entirely. Sorry NC boulderers, but if the area ever sees the development it's capable of sustaining, it may rival or even beat Boone for both quality and quantity.

Here's a sample:

Heyman. I can't really answer your questions well, BUT I have heard of some "secret" places to climb in Fl. Not the best of quality and I can't even remember the names other than they're around the panhandle... but I must admit they sound pretty f'n cool. Search google and see if you get dice on sinkhole and cave climbing in Fl. Some buddies of mine talked about a trip of theirs where they dived into sinkholes and climbed out and also repelled into a cave and climbed out. Like I said, not the best of quality...but forsure something.

State: TN

1) Sunset. Primarily Trad and the climbing is incredible. Awesome views, super easy access, and a great variety. The downside is the crowds of exceptionally rich people and lack of parking. It gets shade and wind all day so it's an awesome summer destination.

2) Tennessee Wall. Tons of routes, mostly trad. Good views and almost no one but climbers are there. No tourons to deal with. The downside is that a many of the moderate routes are left facing corners and the approach is rough. South facing, great climbing in cold weather.

3) The Obed. Lots of sport climbing variety. Biggest roofs in the South. More than 40 ft of horizontal climbing. Routes go from easy to stupid hard. There are so many different cliffs here, you can find sun in the winter and shade in the summer no problem. There's also a few decent trad routes if you don't mind the bushwhack. Many routes have an amazing view of the Obed river.

Honorable Mention:

Foster Falls has lots of sport routes and very easy access.

Big South Fork is aid climbing central and has many of Tennessee's longest routes. Lots of multi-pitch trad/aid routes in a very secluded area. The best 'Adventure Climbing' in Tennessee can be found here.

Reason: Only legal place to climb if you can stand the fact that the season starts in August and ends shortly thereafter...

For Iowa it's Pictured Rocks county park near Monticello, Iowa.

It's easy to find and there are dozens of sport routes.

So I'm quoting myself here 'cuz I came back and read and realized that there must be a bouldering destination. I don't do much of it but bouldering has become HUGE in NC. The Boone area is the center of bouldering, but Rumbling Bald is said to be one of the classic bouldering areas of the east. The CCC has also stepped up to keep access open, and there is excellent trad climbing there as well, with some of the best cracks in the east.

SO, Rumbling Bald has to be #3 on the list.

I changed my vote to UC Santa Barbera, english and literature wing. Some SICK crimping on iron hard brick retaining walls, probably the best in the Cuntry.

Well, this is kind of a stupid thread, both because of the obvious qualitative problems of defining an are as "beat," and also because state boundaries can be very contrived, with no regard to natural dividing lines.

Hueco Tanks is a good example of this: it is ten hours from over 90% of Texas's population, and is as far west as Denver or Albuquerque. But because it happens to fall under some contrived political boundaries, Texans can proudly claim it as their own, and as an example of the wonderful climbing that exemplifies the lone star state.

This is kind of a silly thread. If you just go on mountainproject.com you'll see every major climbing area for every state that has a major climbing area.

It doesn't look like anyone from New York has bothered to answer.

For the best concentrated trad climbing in one place I think it's pretty hard to beat the Gunks, although I'm sure there are folks who would make a case for the Chapel Pond area in the 'Dacks or Poke-O.

The best bouldering is also probably in the Gunks, especially with the new area that's about to open up, although again there are some bouldering areas in the 'Dacks that maybe someone will make a case for. I haven't bouldered in the 'Dacks so I can't really say.

The best sport climbing in NY? There is a climb called Sente with three bolts on it. Pretty nice thin face climb, if short.

Pennsylvania-
uhhhhhh...
Haycock for bouldering. Some very awesome climbs on rock that isnt found everywhere. Diabase (which is what your climbing on) can only be found in PA and South Africa. like, what?

Stony Ridge for sport and trad. Real short routes but AWESOME climbs and friction. some sweet finger cracks too. routes are only 30-40 feet though.

And i guess ill list Birdsboro since thats the only other place in PA ive been. its pretty cool but its a quarry so its a choss pile haha.
Hope this helps, Bro!

Missouri- it's a tossup really. Andromeda has some really cool sport and trad lines, & Scheuler Ferry is probably the best sport crag in the state. For bouldering, Swope park & Earthquake Hollow are pretty neck & neck as far as quality. Anyone else got a take on this?

Minnesota- i gotta give Barn Bluff it's props for Sport Routes. Blue Mounds State Park though... 2 mile long cliff, not 1 bolt & ALL TRAD!!! Gotta love it! Pirate

Dude you forgot Reimers Ranch for sport climbing. Personally I don't like Reimers but it is a very popular sport climbing destination in Texas.

I second Enchanted Rock for Trad and some Sport and Hueco for bouldering.

I always do. However, Rumney was included as NH's best sport area. Cannon has no sport.

Yeah, I just thought out of destination climbing point of view for somebody coming from afar. As from coming from NYC perspective, if I'm driving that far, I might as well go up to Cannon or N. Conway...

The best sport climbing in NY? There is a climb called Sente with three bolts on it. Pretty nice thin face climb, if short.

Shantytown in Southern Adirondacks is supposed to have good concentration of quality bolted routes. Also Bouldering on Snowy Mountain is supposedly world class. But as in my argument against Rumney in NH, just couple of exits north brings you to some quality trad climbing, so it makes it hard to recommend these as destination climbing areas.

There is more trad at smith (and in my opinion better trad). There is more bouldering at Sisters or smith for that matter, or even at widgi/meadowcamp/the depot/bach boulders (all along the deschutes in bend with in a few miles) than at carver.

I'd say if there is one destination in oregon that is a "must climb" area it is smith and smith alone.

I do climb all over oregon though. But for an out of stater there's not much else thats worth the trip.

If we are adding alpine rock to the mix my fav's are 3FJ and washington (they have actual 5th class pitches with decent rock and great exposure)

Totally agree, Smith is the only worthwhile destination to make a trip to the state for, but the OP asked for the top 3 spots, so I had to pick some.

I don't think the OP asked for a destination for each type of style (trad, sport, boulder), just 1-3 areas and the dominant style of each area. Still, I see nobody is attempting the list for CA, UT, CO, WY or one of the other states with a lot of climbing areas.

Wyoming! --Generally the climbing is very bad and your time would be better spent climbing in CO or CA or even MD. But if you had to climb something I've found these to be better-than-shitty:

Sport: Ten Sleep
800+ sport routes with room for thousands more on beautiful limestone. Get the guidebook in Ten Sleep, WY at Dirty Sally's Ice Cream Shop

Bouldering: Cedar Mountain
800 (seems to be the magic number around here, eh?) boulder problems on sandstone. Get the guidebook at the Beta Coffee House in Cody, WY (across the street from the Irma Hotel patio, adjacent to Main St.). Get some beta from the owner and guidebook writer, Mike Snyder, while you're there.

Trad: Terrible everywhere.

I've certainly never seen any need nor had the desire to drive that far south/east for the choss ridden roadside crags down/over there.

Rumbling Bald is great, and I'd agree that you could probably put all NC climbing areas on the list, with Crowder's Mtn and Pilot Mtn being at the bottom, of course.

AZ has many areas but one in particular is a must do for trad: Cochise.

Sport climbng is very popular in Jacks Canyon but other areas abound. It is very easy to get to if driving tween Cali/Nev and the east along I-40.

Although mired in controversy, Queen Creek has a wealth of trad, sport and bouldering all within an hour or so of Phoenix.

While Farley is really good for boulder (not a lot, but really high quality), the North Shore can be just as good and there is a lot more of it.

For bouldering, I think Priest Draw is a "must climb" area simply because it is so unique and really features classic lines in a great setting. That said, I think Groom Creek is a better area all around but there are other places like it, whereas the draw is pretty much it's own thing.

Originally I feared what you might consider for AZ Manny, but these 3 work. One thing I noticed was how you put Cochise for Trad even though its pretty much down near Mexico yet you say Jacks for Sport basically because its near the I-40.

Just the fact that Jacks is hardcore manufactured I wouldn't put that on any list, but if I had to have droves of out of towners stock a crag I would rather it be Jacks.

Priest Draw has already been sold out so that too is a great addition to the big 3.

Personally, any of the new limestone that has been bolted in the last 10 years is considered must climb in my book as far as sport. Fortunately access doesn't allow droves to pile into those area's.

Not to replace Cochise but I would like to add another crag to the list of Must Climb Trad for AZ. You've all heard of it and when you see it its everything you hoped for, Paradise Forks.

QC has tons of climbing but none of it is MUST DO IMO. (Exception: The Totem Pole in LD)

Jbone, he did say "must climb" and I took it to mean a combination of convenience and quality routes. The Forks and Jacks do have a connection: I-40.

Jacks unfortunately has a stigma attached, as you pointed out, but it is more popular than the numerous quality limestone crags in the central and southern part of AZ. In part because of its easy accessibility and it has more routes in the moderate grades than the other limestone crags.

Cochise is near the border, hot now for sure so that would give the Forks and all that basalt up there the edge during the summer. I still think the number of routes and size of the crags gives Cochise an edge for trad over all areas in the state, IMHO.

I agree that Cochise is far and away the most "destination" area in AZ.

Sport probably belongs to Shagg Crag.
For historic coolness factor, without a doubt it's Katahdin at Baxter State Park.

Since you are doing all 50 states I might as well do the pile I grew up in, for the sake of your project's grade:

Maryland
1. Carder Rock - just outside DC, on the MD side of the Potomac. There's bouldering, top roping, meh.
2. Annapolis Rock - off the Appalachian trail in Frederick county. It's got some trad, but mostly it just makes sense to top rope. There are boulders.
3. Sugar Loaf Mountain - Decent top roping/trad on a conglomerate similar to what you find in the gunks.

Generally, MD climbing is nearly mediocre, but more frustrating than anything once one has been to a real climbing locale (e.g. Yosemitah, the Gunks). One is reminded with such route names as "Go West, Young Man, Go West" (5.something, some bullshit crag).

Honestly, nothing in MD must be climbed, just the climber-at-heart must get out somewhere.

Gee, you think?

Honestly, Vedauwoo kind of occupies a strange place in Wyoming climbing. I mean, its one of the most crowded places in Wyoming, but mostly because its closer to Fort Collins than Lumpy Ridge. For the average visitor (so 5.9 and easier), Lumpy has a lot more to offer, simply because the routes are longer. But Vedauwoo has a lot of burly climbing, something that Lumpy lacks in similar proportion. Vedauwoo's easier routes just don't measure up in quality to its harder routes. I haven't done a thorough tour of Lumpy yet to see if that's the case there too, but seriously, I can think of only a few must-do 5.0-5.8 routes at the 'Woo, and three or four times that number of must-do 5.10s. The quality really ramps up around 5.8+ or so.

Rumbling Bald is great, and I'd agree that you could probably put all NC climbing areas on the list, with Crowder's Mtn and Pilot Mtn being at the bottom, of course.

No no, I think you're confused. Pilot is at the TOP...

of the sport rappellers list (I never know how to spell that?)

Haycock for bouldering. Some very awesome climbs on rock that isnt found everywhere. Diabase (which is what your climbing on) can only be found in PA and South Africa. like, what?

Ashboro NC is also a diabase area.

This is a difficult choice as the bouldering areas in PA are amazing. While haycock may have the most problems - it also has the most problems (not a summer area, bad landings, difficult navigation).

So I'd have to vote Ghost town over Haycock as a bouldering area - for the superior asthetics and amazing quality of the problems.

However.....

My vote for what is the best climbing area in PA and the one that people would have a reason to visit the state for - would be Hunter Rocks for the amazing rock quality and features. Perhaps the stickiest, coolest featured sandstone in the world.

And Hunters has something no other climbing area in the country has - quality Font Circuits (minus the red and blue paint). Because of the Dresden-like mini-towers and convoluted nature of the sandstone formation you can literally climb for hours without ever touching the ground - only stopping every once in a while on top of a tower to admire the view.

So if you are climbing addict and are comfortable soloing at around 5.8 - the hunter rock circuits have the longest continuous "fix" of fun moves on amazing rock anywhere.

WY is easy. 1.) Sinks - Sport, 2.) The Winds - Trad, 3.) Devil's Tower - Trad.

Depending on who you ask and personal style you could flip 1 and 2. Devil's Tower is only 3 cause it's not open year round.

As for the other 3 I'm not sure you could narrow it down to just 3 places.

Actually, the June closure has never been mandatory, and frankly, its almost too hot in June anyway. Plus, since the Tower is far enough from, well, anything that planning a trip around the closure really shouldn't be that hard.

And Ten Sleep is everything that Sinks wants to be, but isn't. Given how crowded and relatively small the well developed area of the winds is, I can't really recommend it as a destination. The Winds should be a major destination, as there are millions of potential routes up there. But at the moment, its way too concentrated on the Cirque of the Towers.

I can understand Ten sleep as your top choice. It's great climbing. I prefer Sinks personally though cause I've always had a better time there. I've only been to Ten Sleep two or three times though so maybe if I was there more it'd be different. Lander is a cool town, Wild Iris is just next door with amazing bouldering and Sinks has steep, fun climbs.

I've always had a great time in the winds and would recommend it to anybody. The majority of the times I've been out there I didn't see a soul other than my partner. I haven't been out there in 2 years so maybe it's changed.

And the tower is closed a month out of an already short season. Come down south and climb in June then tell me Eastern Wyoming is too hot to climb. Granted, I'm a pussy on the flip side of that in the winter

You have a point. I mean, it'd be pretty cut and dried if there's only one standout climbing area in the state. But Wyoming has 6 or 7, at least, and it all depends on what kind of climbing you want to do. If you slavishly follow the guidebook, the Winds really aren't for you. If you want a lot of steep climbing, Sinks won't really do it for you, nor will Ten Sleep, but Wild Iris will be right up your alley. We've got world class ice in Cody.

And where's the fun in that?

I didn't see anybody speaking up about Arkansas either. The state is littered with random walls and clusters of boulders but a few big ones stand out when I think of Arkansas:

1.) Horseshoe Canyon is a no brainer. Mostly sport but does have a lot of fun bouldering and a handful of trad.

2.) Sam's Throne. Trad.

3.) A little tougher because there are alot of areas that could fill the 3 spot, (Cave Creek, Fern Gulley, Fountain Red) Honestly they are all pretty much the same, all solid Sandstone Sport climbing with tons of potential

The best trad routes i've done has been in the tetons and sinks caynon is a great sport place. Even the sport crags outside of jackson are pretty sweet.

Grew up in TX:
*Trad: Agree with acorneau on E Rock
*Sport: Not sure *personally* btw Greenbelt or Reimer's
*Bouldering: Don't really boulder, but CW is Hueco Tanks.

Been living in CT for a while now, getting out about once a week all year for 3 years now (might slack to every other week in winter - I don't really actually keep track):
Trad: CW is Ragged Mtn. My personal favorite is East Peak though.
Sport: I recognize I'm a visitor and will never quite get the periodic internecine warfare over bolts here (don't shoot the messenger if what follows, although this is old news, is new to you, fellow CT trad/toprope friends): The only wall I've personally been to that's bolted sport is Firewall at Bradley Mountain. I hear of other project areas ongoing elsewhere, but like I said, I'm staying out of that fight.
Bouldering: again, I don't have a clue - we'll see if anyone who really knows chimes in.

Edit: acorneAu - doh!

American Fork is nowhere near the top sport climbing destination in UT. I would say that, putting together the best of wide variety of ratings, quantity of routes, nice atmosphere, and accessibility, Maple Canyon is the clear winner. Not all that diverse, but still, I think that more out-of-staters make the trip there than to any other sport destination in UT.

Joe's Valley would also beat out LCC for bouldering, though I have not done much at either of those areas.

I would have to agree with vegastradguy on Red Rock on it being the most climbed, but I would have to say that Lamoille Canyon in the Ruby Mts. is a better place to climb. There is about 7 miles of glacial cut granite. It has climbing there all year round, as long as you like ice climbing too. In the summer and fall its the three main types if climbing; trad, sport, and bouldering. It has grades from 5.6 to 5.14. I like it mostly 'cause it's a local yocal area, not a lot of congestion like the valley or other major climbing destinations.

I've got a couple for Alabama.

Horse Pens 40:
- Style(s): Bouldering
- Why: It's absolutely beautiful there. It's dominated by mostly sloper problems, but there are a few crimpy ones as well. I've really enjoyed my days there. The property is privately owned, so it's kept up very well (unlike some other places I've been to where people have spray-painted the rock Mad).

Sand Rock/Cherokee Rock Village:
- Style(s): Trad, Sport, Toprope, Bouldering
- Why: There are a ton of different climbs, depending on your preference. Also, there are plenty of routes to match all skill levels, so there's something for everyone.

And the tower is closed a month out of an already short season. Come down south and climb in June then tell me Eastern Wyoming is too hot to climb. Granted, I'm a pussy on the flip side of that in the winter

Had a GREAT day climbing at the Tower last night. Thank GOD so many people believe it's closed...

We've already said it's not a mandatory closure. It's a recommended closure out of respect for the cultures that the month of June and the tower itself are religously significant. Climbing the tower this month could be compared to spitting on the holy cross. I'm sure your GOD you're thanking would appreciate that.

Basically, you're a dick.

I don't want to turn this into a debate about the closure, but I have very mixed feelings about it. Mostly because the prayer bundles stop about a hundred yards from the trail head. That's like stopping just inside of the gates at St. Peter's Square. Climbing can be deeply spiritual, and it confuses me that one flavor of spirituality is discouraged in favor of another, especially when there is clearly enough of that resource to go around.

Bowers

Yeah, there are MANY diabase areas, but the TRIASSIC DIABASE at haycock is one of 3 types of triassic diabase found in PA, and the only other place in the world that it is found is in Africa (which is one of the ways they proved the continents were once attached to each other)

Jesus is so mad at you right now.

As a former Virginian, I'd say Old Rag is the tits on the VA circuit. As a current Texan, I can say that Enchanted Rock is more tits than Old Rag. Also, some of the kids in Austin claim that EPC is fundamentally Texas, but I'm fairly certain they all failed geography and Texas State History. As for Hueco, geographic boundaries and abysmal recreational user policies place it in Texas, but for all intents and purposes it's Mex/New Mexico.

Petsfed is right... this thread shouldn't be about the voluntary June Tower closure. And even though I took part in the planning process... listened to and believed in the "marketing" the Park Service ranted regarding "mutual respect" and "cross cultural education... helped clean up human feces off of picnic tables after one of only TWO native American gatherings since the CMP was implemented...

Oops... better get my dick off the soap box...

Here is a thread where you can go discuss the Devil's Tower Closure.
