Thinking of a gathering for August at Devil's Lake. A "midwest" gathering for those of us in IL, IN, IA, MN, MI, and WI (and of course, everyone regardless of state is welcome). I'm not going to set it up until I have at least 10 possitive answers, but time is of the essence because if I don't get the site reserved by next month, there won't be a gathering as everyhting is booked solid by March. Let me know. I was thinking a Thursday through Monday. Just a big party, and we even might climb a little. Steve

Steve, I think this is a good idea and I would even like to participate, but do you really think August is best? It has got to be the hottest, most humid, most slippery time to climb at Devils Lake. How about a more temperature (and slime factor) friendly time? Curt

Well, I was planning for late because of money and time. It's hard to get a group campsite, and even harder to get regular campsites. August is better than July, but there is also the option for September. What do you guys think? We may be out of luck soon, as I do not know if campsites will be obtainable. I'd hate to reserve a group site for $120 (for four days) and have only three people show up. Ideas...

Well wildtrail, depending on the date, you may possibly have a good sized Minnesota contingent attenting your "Mid-West Gathering..." I might suggest a different crag if there were somewhere better but DL is probably the most centralized, highest quality crag available for the situation. I would vote for a September date to hold down the heat factor and "slime" factor as curt mentioned. On another note, we MNsotans are planning a Minnesota Gig for late May or early June at Blue Mounds State Park. Anyone from anywhere is also welcome to come climb with us at an undoubedbly less crowded crag of the same general make-up as Devils Lake (quartzite although, a bit shorter). You can show your interest here until we get an "event post" going if you would like more info or to let us know what date works best for you. *sorry 'bout advertising on your thread wildtrail... Well, I think September is the month, then. Let's get working on this. I'm in for the beer. Not sure about the climbing, but I can belay slave. I'll be having knee surgery towards the end of this coming summer, so we'll see if I can even get up that little hill. Hey, hey, hey it's all good! Those of you that have said "groovy," spread the word and tell them to post here so I can keep track of the amount of people as group sites only accomodate 20.

Great! Lots of responses. I saw one or two people pulling for summer, but unfortunately, I can't do it then. I was going to pull for late September, so that it cools a bit. Besides, since I can't afford to put down the money for the group site at this moment (120 for 4 days--up to 20 people), summer would be almost impossible as there are slim pickings as it is already. Sites are disappearing rapidly and will be gone by next month. September means available sites. Well, group sites, that is. So, I'll plan for September. Unless, of course, someone wants to drop 120, possibly 240 dollars at this moment to reserve the group sites. I would think not. So, by the time group sites are available, I'll be able to afford the site or two. Keep spreading the word. The more the merrier. If we can get at least 20 people, it will only be $6 bucks per person for four days of camping (well, 3 nights/4 days). Steve

Ok so we have a bunch of people opting for summer and some for sept. Personally I say lets do both. When does Minn start school again? we could do it the week before that and the second weekend in Sept? I'll call Green Valley farm and see if they have any opening. Chris I called green valley twice now and no answer, I'll let you guys know if I get ahold of someone. Thats where I always camp, its a pretty fun and open place. photon, That was idiotic, at best. I guess your the king of climbing. #1 You're not welcome #2 You weren't invited #3 You obviously don't know what a gathering is about How the hell would you know if a person types better than they climb? Does it matter? Oh, I'm sure you're one of those losers that doesn't know what climbing is about. You probably only climb 5.13 because it's a 5.13. Carry a tick list with that chip on your shoulder, do ya? Sub-par climbing? Hardly. Short, perhaps, but I bet if you lead 5.10 on granite or sandstone you can't lead it here. Guys, just ignore idiots like this. They're better people and better climbers than us anyway. We'll have our gatherings at Devil's Lake and drink and enjoy our sub-par climbing, bugs, and humidity. At least Wisconsin isn't a complete crap hole like Kansas. We know what gatherings are about (party all night, climb all day) and we understand what it is to have commraderie, friendship, and fun. We aren't simple minded enough to judge each other because we may type better than we climb. We know what friends are. Climb On!

Lew, its about 40 miles NNW of Madison. If you look on a map of Wisconsin it'll be just south of a town named Baraboo. Or better yet look it up on trusty ol' mapquest! I hope that helped a bit. :D Oh ya, forgot...check out www.devilslakewisconsin.com to get an idea of the area

Sorry guys/gals.. been away for a bit. I'm a high school ski race coach during the winter (season just ended), so I'm really not on here as much as I would like. Anyway, I'm glad this sucker got off the gound! Woohoo!! :D I'm obviously still in for the gtg, so you had better not have pulled me off the list Wildtrail. Here is some fuel for the fire.. we can definitely be up there for a gtg more then once. Sure, we can have a "formal" one at Devil's Lake, where we camp in the group lots. That will definitely be a good time.. heck, it'll be nice just to get up and walk up the CCC trail. But, the one in August we can just camp at Green Valley. I'm there all the time w/ guiding for Adventure Rock, and I can say, almost for a fact, that we won't have a problem getting in there. Heck, even if we did I could probably talk to Kay (owner of Green Valley) and Eric (manager of Adventure Rock) to let us possibly use the Adventure Rock site (we rent it out for the whole year). Just as long as it doesn't overlap w/ a class, I doubt it would be a problem. But, let me know if you want me to look into it more. Regardless, I'm up there almost all of the time anyway.. either teaching or just climbing. If anyone is around, just stop down by the pond at Green Valley, back by the field.. I might be there. Anyway, can't wait for the climbing season to finally begin. For anyone interested, might be having several April/May climbing trips down to Southern Illinios or/and RRG. Maybe another gtg is in order.. :)

Alright.. so, what's the deal with this? Any head-way? You know, now that the weather is getting a little nicer, we could always have a "mini" gtg some weekend. Nothing serious.. but, those that are around could get together and hang-out, climb, set-up a slack line at the end of the day.. Just a thought.

I'll most likely be there for both (heck, I would probably be up there anyway). But, I really can't be specific right now since I'm currently in Boston and don't have access to my calander. I'll check for sure when I get back.. On a side note, I've kind of been tossing around the idea of getting a group site down around the CCC lot for a pre-curser to one of these two. Anyone possible interested?

Jay, Chris has one planned for August and September. I agree with Curt on the August trip. If I went, it would only be for the party. He's got one planned for late September. That should work for everyone. Steve

In reply to: wildtrail, I would love to be a part of it...my August is pretty full though so I can't give you a definite until dates are set... :) Mike, We do have dates. Chris (quickclips has set them up).
In reply to: Again we have 2 dates right now one Aug 14-18 and another Sept 18-22. Just so you know. I won't be at the August gathering. I don't think too many will due to the temperature, humidity, and slimey rock (again, due to humidity). Chris should still get a decent turn out for it. I'll be at the September gathering.

Depending on when the you'll be at the CCC I might join you there too. Right now i'm working mon-fri, but I'm gonna try and get those fridays off. We'll see what happens. The reason I did one in Aug. also is its before the colleges start so I figured more students would be able to go. And then Sept for the good weather. Chris

I "plan" on getting up to Devils Lake whenever the opportunity arrises. I haven't been there yet - but I'm about 3 hours away. For a Sep gathering, would you all get a group site or something? I guess camping space up there is in high demand.

Sh*t! I may not be there for either. Well, I said I wouldn't for August. Too damn hot for camping. September may be out now, too. I may be heading to South Dakota for a week-long climbing trip from the 19th or 20th through the 28th. I'll keep ya posted and see what can be arranged. Honestly, if the choice comes between granite and smooth Wisconsin quartzite, I'm pickin' granite. :D

Ok so I've got a lot of people looking at September, but August is almost here, so who's in for August? PM me and let me know. Green Valley Camp Ground is on the West side of HWY 12 about a 1/2 mile North of Ski High Road. It's on the way down a hill before a big right turn (if you're coming from the South.) The woman who runs the place's name is Kay. I'll be getting there on Thursday night.

Well.. I'll definitely be there for both. Coming up Friday night, and leaving Sunday evening. If there are people staying around either the day before or after, there might be something I can do to stay the extra day. Chances are I'll be staying at the Adventure Rock portion of the camp ground, but it's not like that really matters. The girlfriend should be coming up in the evening on Saturday.. ..but, anyone willing to share a lead line on Saturday?

Well, I think I may be able to make it for part of the August gathering, but I won't know till last minute.. I would shoot for coming out early thursday or early friday - will it be a problem either getting my own site or sharing a site (group site?)

Chris, Sorry about me not being able to make it, but it's a choice between Devil's Lake and the slippery quartzite I can barely climb and a road trip to South Dakota on really good granite I can climb with relative ease. I haven't had a road trip in a long time, so I'm goin' for it. Sorry, man. I really wanted to come out and party with everyone, but the road is a callin'!

Well, it looks like I can come out and play too, yay.. I'll be bringing myself and a rope - so I can at least contribute there, and in belays. I'm planning on driving up Friday night, is there a problem getting to the camp site in the evening, like around 9 or 10pm? Or, am I better off leaving early saturday morning? Id' rather leave fri since I'll be well rested for saturday.. I can stay till maybe monday or tuesday. Is it easy enough to find the campgrounds and group camp site? This is my first trip to devils lake - so I don't really know the area or anything. If any other chicago/nw burbs ppl wanna do a little car pooling let me know. Right now I plan on getting a rental car, so either I'll do that, or I'll join someone else. oh yeah, I live down by Elgin/Crystal Lake (IL); about 10 minutes off I90..

Well.. for everyone to come up to the camp-ground, here are some helpful directions relatively quickly. From Hwy 94, exit on Hwy 60 (Lodi exit), and take it west (right turn from the end of the ramp). Follow Hwy 60 into downtown Lodi. You'll come to a stop sign, which is Hwy 113. Make a right onto Hwy 113 (north). You'll be on this a bit.. but, you're taking it to the Ferry Crossing. My guess is that it's about 8 mi or so until the Ferry enterence, which will be on the right side of the road. You can't miss it though, it's all lit up and there will be lighted signs before it. Take the Ferry across the Wisconsin River, and you'll hit a stop sign and Hwy 78. Make a left onto Hwy 78, and there'll be a road on the right almost immediately. You can either make a right onto it (can't remember the same of it), or continue on Hwy 78 to/unitl Hwy 113 splits back north (right). If you do make that initial right, follow this road until you hit a stop sign (4 way stop.. Devil's Head Ski Area will be right in front of you, The Old Schoolhouse Restaurant will be right on your left). This is County DL, make a left. Follow DL until you get to another stop sign, this is Hwy 113. Make a right onto Hwy 113, and the next road you're going to come to is the South Enterence for Devil's Lake State Park, which will be on your left. Enter the park, and follow it through. You'll go past the lake, and eventually up a hill with a bunch of crazy turns. At the top of the hill, the road will make a hard right turn, afterwards.. there's a road on your left. This is Ski-Hi Rd. Make a left onto it (only way you can go). Follow Ski-Hi Rd. to another stop sign, which will be Hwy 12. Make a right onto Hwy 12.. when you start going down a hill, slow down. The enterence to Green Valley is on your left, about half way down the hill. It's the only driveway on the left side (even on the hill for that matter). If you get to where Hwy 159 connects with Hwy 12, you've gone to far. Turn in, say hi to Kay.. and, she should be able to lead you to where everyone is. Now.. the bad news. I won't be able to make it up till Saturday night now. I have a bachelar party I need to go to on Saturday. But, I will see everyone on Saturday night..

Well I was there on Thursday night, and climbed hard with some local guys on Friday. Met some people there and they stayed with me on Friday, climbed again saturday, and no one showed up that night either. So Sunday I stuck around the site for a while no one showed so I left. hope to see you guys un September. edit: yeah it was hot, really really hot. But it kept the crowds away. Friday wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, and saturday I climbed in the shade so it was actually pretty nice. was anyone there that I just didn't find?

Ya.. I was. But, I wasn't able to get up to the park until Saturday night, late (I think I rolled into Green Valley around 11:00pm). It really seems like there were a lot of people there, at least.. a lot of camp fires. I thought, man.. if I wasn't so tired, I would find the whole group. Instead, I completely crashed. Woke up early Sunday morning, and was on the rock around 9:00am. Bluff wasn't as busy as I thought it would be.. but, still people around. We definitely tried to lead in the shade all day, and in the afternoon went down for a swim. It still was a great day.. I'm surprised that there were more people around for this.. even through it was so warm. Heck, I'm kicking myself for not going up sooner, and just ditchin' the bachelor party. I'm sure the Sept gtg will be better though. And, I already know now, there's no way I'm going up late this time..

Hey, can anyone give me the nuts and bolts on this "gig" so I don't have to go thru all 6 or whatever pages. It looks like its 9/18 - 22??? What I need is; where to camp? cost per night? do I need reservations? any special directions to find the RC.commers? blah, blah, blah... I would probably come down Friday morning and leave Sunday afternoon. And, who'd maybe be available to show me around or point me to a few routes (never been to DL)? Anyway, thanx for the help ppl... duskerhu

To save people from reading all the previous pages, here's the deal. Sept 19-22 (whatever that thurs-sunday is) meet at Green Valley Camp Ground off of hwy 12 just north of Ski High road on the west side of the road. I'm setting up a specific spot for us this time, and I'll post where it is later. It is $6/night plus wood. I can't take that Friday off anymore, so I'll be getting there around 6 on Friday night. I'm planning on going straight to the site, unless people want to meet somewhere on the rock. Chris

I'll be leaving Friday after work as well.. which, should put me in the park around 6:30. Chris, or anyone for that matter, we should all meet up in a lot around then and do a quick bouldering session Friday evening. Be a damned nice way to start the weekend..

CAR POOLING... I'm also interested in a 1 way car pooling - I'm in the NW burbs, near Elgin... To all you chicago ppl coming up 90, I'm ~ 10 minutes off 90.. I am meeting a local gym owner for some trad lessons on monday for 2-3 days, and will drive back with him. So someone, if you got room for me and my stuff, let me know if I can tag along on the way there - I'm more than happy to chip in for gas or beer or whatever.
