Dead man's float, I've passed the 2:30 mark  Holding myself under with arms and legs flapping, maybe a little over a minute. Uses up all the oxygen! ( pull-ups, bench press....will the next thread be "How many beers can you drink in an hour?"  )

When I used to train for swimming I could do four laps and a little bit under water, I'm not sure how long it took as I couldn't see straight after. Now I'm not so sure but definately less.

Trained freedivers can push themselves out to 5 min+, and there are a handful a freaks among them over 7minutes. Most of these guys limit dive time to half of that (or less) because of the danger involved with shallow water blackout. Please guys, if you are playing with this stuff, never do it underwater without a spotter... I lost a friend who drowned in a university pool during open swim workout hours... he was just training in the shallow end, people swimming right over him. Old freedivers and freediving spearfishermen are like old alpinists, they all have a bunch of dead friends. The problem (stated simply) is that the body has no real 'detector' for low oxygen, it only senses a buildup of CO2, and after a while you can learn to tolerate it. If you get distracted by something underwater, like a fish you want to shoot or a few more seconds on your watch that can be it, lights out. If you're just sitting at your desk turning blue, enjoy your headache. :D

wow... that is intense... both the fact that people can hold their breath that long (and while moving i assume) and your experiences. i cannot fathom what it would be like to lose a close friend, and for something like that where he could easily have been saved...

Breath: around 2:15 Beers per hour: I prefer Malt liquor bench: I once tried to do like 200 and all I did was press myself against the bench really hard. I too love sifl and ollie and I though I was alone in my adoration for the little sock-faced bastards!

I can only manage about a minute. My uncle on the other hand used to free dive down to the guys wearing scuba gear 75 feet down. That used to freak them out. He was a fisherman up on the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Queensland in Oz. He used to target Coral Trout and he would shoot them with his spear gun. He was telling me about how to nail these delectable fish. You would head down and spot a trout, you would then look away at something else and the trout being inquisitive would come over to check it out, bam, nail the trout every time. You just have to have the patience and the breath not to chase these guys otherwise they would hightail it outta there. I was up on the reef a couple of years ago and snorkelling when I spotted a Barramundi Cod, yummm, I gotts get me one of those thought I. Down I go, Cod nowhere to be seen. That`s funny. After several drifts over this spot I worked out that he had a little hidey hole so I head down in about 25 feet of water to this trench amongst the coral and discovered his little cave. I nailed him, trouble is I also nailed the back of his cave. I had to end up leaving a great stainless spear down there with a Barramundi Cod impaled on it cos the skipper was anxious to get out and do some more bottom bashing fishing. Doh. Dinner that night was a dozen painted crayfish and lobsters, yummm. We wondered what the poor people were doing that night. ...Phil...

Underwater: i'm somewhere around 2:30, but i'd like to push that higher. it's only beginning of swim season so i'm outta shape. I've gotta try the 4laps thing....wonder if I could make it. when you say laps it that 25yards, meters, or the width of the pool? Bench: max at 180 over Spring Break; I know, I should get to the gym more.

Diving with SCUBA is like hiking with a leafblower. If you can be silent underwater, especially in California, the ocean is a whole different place.... worth the time to learn.

Looks like 1:45 at 6000ft. and over 2 minutes at 500ft. elevation. Cold water seems to help prolong the time. So you guided on the Red Sea, kachoong? Out of Sharm El Sheik maybe? I dove there once in 1986, but my dad was diving there for three years straight around that time. We dove on the "Yolanda" and I think Ras Mohammed. Great place! The Hilton back then had a crappy generator that would go out in the evening, making you have to sleep in a chair at the pool. I would have preferred a tent.

In reply to: Many moons ago, at around 17, I held my breath for 3 mins. Not now. Maybe 1 min 20 seconds these days. Is that 17 moons exactly? In my opinion, having done heaps of skin diving, anyone who can hold their breath in a static position for longer than two and half minutes is doing fcuking awesome! You either need genetic ability or years of training or have some wierd low blood pressure thing amd meditational frame of mind. I found I stayed under longer by sinking down to depth with 14lbs (Red Sea saltwater), usually to around 60 feet and staying there for a while before using my energy to get to the surface.... when you're down there, the surface looks a hell of way up.... and having something to distract you, like huge fish and stuff, keeps your mind off the fact you're an air breather....

2:40 was my best ever. Once watched my father hold his breath for 4:30. Swimming: a little over a minute, or 2/3 of a 50m pool. My density helps - I sink if my lungs are any less that 3/4 full, so very little effort is needed to keep myself down (I've done 5 push-ups on the bottom of a pool before). Deepest free dive: at the Tangalooma wrecks, on Moreton Island. Don't know exactly, but couldn't see the bottom from the surface, and I had to equalise twice on the way down. Recovered a guy's fishing line off a snag for him.

In reply to: In reply to: You guys are always welcome to come visit..... plenty of climbing and diving to be had here Down Under.... but you better be quick and come over since I may be in the states before too long.... the idea's well down the pipeline already.... infact, it's close to a reality  ....I'm sure one more Aussie will mix in well with the masses.... No kiddin? How cool is that. When are you guys thinking? Where to? Yeah, well it's inevitable, since Newbie lives in the eastern US  and it's only a matter of when at this stage. Could be as early as December and fingers crossed, depending on current applications.... Ohio or Texas.
In reply to: So you guided on the Red Sea, kachoong? Out of Sharm El Sheik maybe? I dove there once in 1986, but my dad was diving there for three years straight around that time. We dove on the "Yolanda" and I think Ras Mohammed. Great place! The Hilton back then had a crappy generator that would go out in the evening, making you have to sleep in a chair at the pool. I would have preferred a tent. The Yolanda is a great wreck. I was close to going there, but the clients pulled at the last minute and had to take them through the Bells to Blue Hole (something I did soooo many times  ) Yes, I lived and guided for six months in the Red Sea out of Dahab, 1 hour NE of Sharm El Sheik. I worked for the Hilton hotel there. It was a fantastic place to be, but eventually the constant staple diet of falafels, rice, egyptian chicken and cat legs, not to mention the sandstorms, camel farts, regular annoying locals and well, lack of monetary gain sent me packing. The diving is spectacular! It spoils you, if you dive there.... caves, canyons, coral gardens, 600' underwater cliffs.... It's amazing what you see (and even get to expect and know) as far as underwater wildlife.... You get to know individual turtles, giant Wrasse, the occasional dolphin, beds of sand eels.... I even saw a three meter (10 foot) moray eel free swimming.... it must have been one foot in diameter. btw.... great potential climbing in the Sinai.... endless granite.... ENDLESS!!!

In physics class this year i got 3:15. it is hard trying not to be too obvious when you start breathing again, people think you're about to die or something. Also, my cousins and i used to have holding your breath competitions in their hot tub. yeah, it is harder at 102 degrees. i got a little over 2:30 one time, and my fingers and lips were blue. kind of scary. i still hold the record for their hottub though, that's all that matters. i guess? kdk
