Hi folks! Just wondering if any of you has been lucky enough to meet or watch Chris Sharma climb in person? Or for that matter, any world renowned climbers? If so could you share with us a some of your experiences. I'm a big fan of his and would be interested in hearing some good stories.

I met him when he was climbing in the Red quite a few years ago. He was still a young phenom at the time, but remarkably humble, down-to-earth and really friendly. He was also sickeningly strong ... as I'm sure he still is ... but c'mon dude ... quit with the hero-worship. ;) (j/k)

I watched him dyno at the last PBC. He was wearing a green shirt. He still had that funky little beard going. I saw Chris Sharma. I feel like I've been touched by an angel, man.

I saw this article awhile back about him. I'm more impressed with his personality and attitude than anything else. I wish more climbers were like this. I've met too many cocky, jerky, idiots out there. Noneless it's like magic watching him climb! "Chris has never been competitive about climbing, however. To the contrary, sincerity and a huge heart have always been his trademark. For this, Sharma has many admirers, and not just among twenty-something gen-exers who look up to him for being the most respected name in bouldering. In Santa Cruz and elsewhere, climbers of all ages and abilities admire him for his big heart and his devotion to the sport. When he’s not in some exotic country putting up the hardest problems, you can find him at Bugaboo Mountain Sports or at Pacific Edge, bouldering and socializing among friends. Which is another reason why Chris is so popular—boulder with him for five minutes and he’ll make you feel like a close friend. For Sharma, it seems, this has always been the most important part of the climbing game."

I have climbed with Hillary so that makes me only 2 degrees away from watching Sharma climb, and being touched by a man angel. Wait a minute. Strike that last thing. Sounds pretty gay.

Just got word not too long ago that Sharma and Josh Lowell are coming up to Dartmouth to promote Lowell's new climbing film. They'll be on campus end of October, and hanging out for awhile to boulder in NH.

ok, my fifteen minutes; i was living down at pete's one winter. had my parking spot all staked out, i'd been there for a month or so - local, eh. one day i got home from a hard day at the boulders and some some goombah had pitched a tent in my backyard. when said goombah showed up that evening, i noticed it was a fresh-faced young sharma (this was back in '96 or '97.) i confronted him, i.e. said howdy. we did the perfunctory greeting, the i sprung it. "you're chris sharme," i accused. he kinda nodded and said yeah, and i said "cool," or something kinda lame. where was i... oh yeah, my fifiteen minutes - i dumped my pee bottle over the fence right behind chris' tent for about a week. hee hee. anyway, he seems like a very cool human being, very positive, very down to earth. never said a thing about the smell of pee permeating his site.

I haven't but my friend (TJ), has. On a recent trip to NYC, he met him bouldering in Central Park. Go figure, right! He's got a picture of both of them together which he keeps it in his car to show off to his friends. One day he'll become lazy, then I'll strike... ridding TJ of his precious photo FOREVER ! Mike

that video was pretty funny. posts like these are fairly vapid. mr sharma didn't seem too thrilled to have 20 people he didn't know following him around all day when i met him at hueco years and years ago, though the gumbie herd was funny to watch. like a few others, i've met an awful lot of well known climbers over the years, and it has never made much of a difference for my life or my climbing. though i did thoroughly enjoy sitting in el cap meadow chatting with him beyer for an afternoon - that guy must be from a different planet.

Hey, I have climbed with jason Kehl, Matt Bosley, Ben Montgomery and I know Eric Horst. It really isn't any different from watching or being with other climbers. There are hundreds of great climbers that just aren't famous.

::checks climbing celebrity ticklist:: - stalked Hill at TPR with mace and a fork, check - soloed the prow with TM Herbert, check - slept with Kauk, check - spotted Graham on a V0, check - rope gunned for the Hubers, check Hmm . . . Looks like the "Sitting on the shoulders of Sharma while he sends Do or Fly" hasn't been ticked yet. Better start stalking him. Then I can post about it on RC and feel really, really cool.

Yes... met him and his girl on the 3rd Pillar of Dana a few years back, which would be the last place I'd expect to meet him. Watched him get off route on what one guidebook calls "steep cracks to avoid", but he sent anyway. He was extremely friendly and humble, almost embarrassed that he was recognized.

I met Tommy Caldwell in Font one time. I kept insisting that I knew him... that maybe we were lovers in a past life... but he didn't remember. He just kept saying his name was "Tom" and I new it wasn't the famous Tom Adams or the legendary Tom Nay, just some other Tom. My partner was embarassed and scolded me when we got back to the car for not knowing who he was. I had no idea who he was but eventually I realized that I had met him in Charleston the summer before.

You know, people on this thread are trying to knock others for wanting to meet Chris Sharma and other pros. Well, they can say what they want to, but I guarentee that if they were to come across Sharma, they would fall all over themselves to meet him, AND they would definately brag to others. Personally I would love to meet Sharma, and plenty of others. But keep in mind there are a bunch of super, awesome climbers that aren't famous as well. Plus, I like meeting everyone that climbs. Also, don't forget that Sharma is human like you, he makes mistakes, gets mad and frustrated, and puts his pants on one leg at a time like the rest of us (hold the comments about putting your pants on two, three or whatever number legs at a time - it's a figure of speech). Anyhow, remember, he's a hell of a climber, and (in my humble opinion) a great inspiration for the sport. Climb Positive

Bull corn. I was working in Tuolumne when all the legends were swarming. Did I go to the big party in the campground where Lynn Hill was? No. Did I take off work to watch Sharma send his problem behind Puppy Dome? Nope. Did I slather over Ron every time I saw him? Nope. Very few of my friends did, as well. People are people are people. I'm proud of the people I associate with, and I don't really want to be one of those people falling all over themselves with celebrity worship.

This web site has way too much negativity. It's pretty pathetic. I hope you all don't carry that around all day, and if you don't why does it suddenly appear on this web site? Either way, I think Sharma is a good climber who has a good attitude. If someone is curious about him then hey power to them, at least they have a good role model (in my opinion).

On a serious note: What is wrong with someone wanting to know about Chris Sharma? The notion that he is a "regular" guy, no big, is hogwash. The only time a pack of mammals follows me atound is when I don't shower, or the authorities are getting ready to make their case, but I digress.... I'm not too "into" the dude myself ( I personally perfer hairless mexican chihuahuas) but there is no doubt that when certain humans arrive at the table of life/crag there is a change in energy....for some.... so really the negativity toward this thread is really amusing.... most would never be revealed as such rectal pores if they could only keep their mouths shut.....myself included....

In reply to: On a serious note: What is wrong with someone wanting to know about Chris Sharma? The notion that he is a "regular" guy, no big, is hogwash. The only time a pack of mammals follows me around is when I don't shower, or the authorities are getting ready to make their case, but I digress.... I'm not too "into" the dude myself ( I personally perfer hairless mexican chihuahuas) but there is no doubt that when certain humans arrive at the table of life/crag there is a change in energy....for some.... so really the negativity toward this thread is really amusing.... most would never be revealed as such rectal pores if they could only keep their mouths shut.....myself included.... ah heck, I guess I really do like hearing myself talk.. you caught me...

Longalong. I don't know you and have no desire to at this point anyways. But why are you wasting your time putting up idiotic responses to other peoples posts? You could be climbing instead? Put something intellelectually stimulating, not something my friends 7 yr old brother would say ? Let's get real. :P But , wait, i know you enjoy feeding off people like me right?

Two stories: One I knew his Dad and would see him every monring, but never made the connection to Chris until one day I asked him why he wore so much Prana gear when he humbly replied "oh my son gives me all this stuff." I stupidly replied, "What is your son Chris Sharma or something?" He said "yes, have you heard of him?" I couldn't believe it. The other one is that I dated a guy named Zach Sharman and every time I went into the climbing gym in Santa Cruz (where Chris works out at times) and told them I was looking for Sharman they'd reply that they don't disiclose his location. Finally after this happened several times one guy (not too bright) asked me if I was dating Chris Sharma. RIGHT!

For indy's original question: I have not officially met him but did watch him climb a sick problem at the PBC. You wouldn't even know that he was in a comp, so relaxed, chill and laidback when he was belaying and giving beta to his TR partner. (the high ball problems at the PBC have top ropes on them) Of course no one had sent the problem and chris had given it one go before I got there. As soon he touched the rock it was like he turned into a different person, you could see and feel the focus he put into the climb. It was pretty intense, I've never seen someone be so focused and intense in a climb. Lauren Lee was also there (oh so hot...) and she said that sharma told her his secret to climbing hard was to to bear down and just keep going and not to stop. It's exactly what I saw, a determined, focused climbing machine that tried his absolute hardest the whole way through. It was an inspiring experience to watch him climb, a must for everyone. He was a normal person and I agree with others that these people are just like any other climbers but there is a reason they are in the spotlight, and it's worth a look.

In reply to: You could be climbing instead? What's funny is I just got back from climbing, oh and riding your mom like a stallon. You, however, most likely have been online the whole time since this began. Let me know if I'm wrong or if you took a break to rub one off to Sharma. The latter most likely being the truth.
In reply to: Peace! I'll drink to that. You are an alcholic too? Sorry I didn't know the 6th grade mom jokes would get to you that bad. Better luck next time.

Longalong, you're one of kind. I admire you're perseverance. And no I haven't been hanging online all day. I have what you call a job, maybe you've heard of it? You seem to mention my mom quite a bit, perhaps you two want to get together? Why don't you come to Vancouver and I'll introduce you to each other? Seriously. I keep taking the bait from you because, like yourself, i find your responses amusing, so maybe in some sick twisted way, we are alike? I hope not. So having a drink makes me an alcoholic? Good theory Einstein! And i'm sure your as sober as a priest? I actually don't mind the jokes, but hearing them from you over and over again, on RC.com is not something I look forward to reading. But hey, if it makes you feel any better, keep posting! Nobody's going to stop you. Climb on freak! :)

Actually, I did get to meet Chris Sharma once--although briefly. About five years ago, I made a bouldering trip to Hueco with Dave Guttman and some other Phoenix folks to boulder with Matt Krise (who was on the 5.10 team with Sharma at the time) and was introduced to him by Matt at Pete's. Unfortunately, he was taking a couple of rest days at the time, so I didn't get to boulder with him. As everyone else has said though, he seemed like a really nice guy. Curt

Yes... there is such a thing as hero worship, and I am just as guilty of it as many other climbers and RC.com-ers out there. I did meet Sharma, in person, 2wice at the PBC. I felt sorry for the crowd around him, left him alone, and was lucky enough to cross his path in my pathetic efforts to climb something worth more than 100 pts. Does he remember me? I hope not... there are a lot of amazing people out there, that WILL remember us, and might even share a rope if we ask... I've enjoyed my time with seasoned climbers who happened to be at the same crag the same day, much more than my 5 total seconds spent with Sharma. Besides, this is RC.com, we have plenty of celebs!!!! PTPP and J.L. are as wacky genuine as they come!

About two weeks ago, I was walking out of the locker room at Pacific Edge where I climbed a lot (as I was in Santa Cruz for the summer taking a class at the university's summer school). As I walked out, I went right past Chris Sharma. My recognition was delayed a couple moments, probably since he was alone at the time (i.e. he had not 40-person enterage). Anyway, no I didn't turn around and go back into the locker room to watch him shower or whatever--I'm just not that type of person. Two days later I went to the gym again. Chris, it turned out, was there that evening. He and a few friends were in the bouldering area where I had planned to work out anyway. So, for much of the next hour, I did my endurance training by cruising the vertical wall while frequently looking over to see what Sharma was up to. Basically, he was doing some crazy stuff off of big, fat, bad slopers. It was impressive to see the way he pulled off long reaches from one crappy sloper to another giant, crappy sloper 3 or 4 feet above the first. He also tried some crazy dynos to slopers but was generally unsuccessful. Yes, he does fail on problems--a lot. It just so happens that the problems he fails on are 7 or 8 V-grades harder than what I can climb (V4). From my field observations of Chris Sharma, I would have to say that he does seem to be genuinely nice. Humble? I think he has a strong inner confidence, but it certainly doesn't come through in the form of arrogance or cockiness. (Yes, he does seem pretty cocky in that old video, but who wasn't when they were 12 or 13. I'm sure I would have acted just as immaturely at that age, especially with a video camera on me.) I noticed that he was actually quite soft-spoken (not necessarily shy, but definitely not loud and obnoxious. I would hear his friends talking from 15-20 feet away, but I didn't actually hear him talking a lot. Overall, in my opinion, he completely lived-up to his reputation of being nice and down-to-earth. He's human, but as far as I could tell, he does a good job filling the roles of climber and of a human being.

Sharma is to appear here in Austin,Tx on October 18th and 19th. He is going to help/set routes, no compete, with a bouldering COMP at the local gym and then to introduce his new video "Pilgrimage". There was only 200 tickets and all were sold in like 2 or 3 days.

Chris used to live accross the street from me in Rovanna. He moved out about when I moved in, but I got to talk with him some, he's super mello and a really nice guy. There seems to be more than just rocks in his head. Some folks say he's a bit spacey, but that's just california!

I met him back in March at my local climbing gym here in Osaka Japan. I am Canadian, but have made Osaka japan my home for the last several years. i walked in and was aproached by one of the workers to act as a translator. Despite the fact that japanese sucks and that neither he or any of the Japanese are big talkers. They, the Japanese local climbers, kept in the distance watching him almost imperceptiply from the periphery with an occasional 'Sakoi'(amazing). It was funny how quite the gym was and how unpopulated the bouldering area was. Usually it is chock a block full of people jossling for the next go and full of shouts of 'combare'. When I asked for who they pointed him out. To be honest I have only read a dozen mags over the last three years(which is how long I have been climbing) but I of course new who he was. Half the climbing videos they have playing constantly in the background at the gym star him, and as well have the posters sticking to any climbing wall featured him climbing some problem or other. Anyway the thing that struck me with him was something I have noticed about most truly good climbers I have met will finish and edit this later got to go teach

[quote MACUALTED Bull corn. I was working in Tuolumne when all the legends were swarming. Did I go to the big party in the campground where Lynn Hill was? No. Did I take off work to watch Sharma send his problem behind Puppy Dome? Nope. Did I slather over Ron every time I saw him? Nope. Very few of my friends did, as well. quote] --It doesn't follow to not want to meet one of the great climbers of our time...such as Lynn Hill, Ron Kauk, or Chris Sharma. It would be, for lack of a better word..."neat" to meet them. I don't necessarily think worship has anything to do with it. Their accomplishments, w/in a sport that means so much to me, are nothing less than amazing. --I never think about these guys when I am not reading about them in a mag or something. However, I will absolutely admit that if I had the chance to meet one of them, have a conversation with them, or hang out with em, I would totally be all about that. How fun would that be!! hmm this thread is OLD....
