why do so many people not like climbing gyms. I enjoy climbing in the alot not as much as out side but no one is goin 2 go outside and climb laps on a route to gain forearm strenght in the gym you can go and focus on one thing practice on climbing for lead climbing. practice droping your knee and outside you go and you climb a route and there is no practice involved or maybe its just me.

I think the problem is climbing for practice.... I climb because it's fun. Getting stronger is just an bonus that comes from climbing. Gym's are there for training and the social atmosphere, but I don't get any enjoyment from cranking on strategically placed plastic holds in a chalk-dust filled indoor room...... Outdoors is the shizat

Indoors or Outdoors, i enjoy both. It's getting from point A to point B. Plastic or rock, doesn't matter to me. It's still a challenge and fun. Unique in its own ways. Kinda like ice hockey and roller hockey. One's not on ice but it's still fun to play. :D

In reply to: why do so many people not like climbing gyms. Becuase they can climb 5.12 outside but get spanked on 5.10's inside. Just joking! :D It's probably because they don't see the point in climbing in a dusty, smelly, unairconditioned, crowded building when you can climb outside in the sun and fresh air. Now that I think about it, why do I climb inside?

I don't know about you guys, but its nice to go to the gymn and meet up with some buddies you haven't seen in a whileand play on a route. Not to mention you get to have some quality time doing the closest thing to real rock climbing there is.

I pulled my shoulder and so did my friend at a climbing gym...never have gotten hurt outside...my partner had injured both of his knees at the gym...not worth it to me...that's my two cents...

Actually, I climb way harder in a gym. I'll try to lead routes indoors that I wouldn't consider leading outside. Probably ' cause I'm chicken-shit.

I have nothing against climbing gyms. While I only climb outside on real rock myself, I think the gym would be a good place to train those climbing muscles. Similar to running on a treadmill as apposed to outdoors.

Though you get really "strong" climbing indoors, the gym trains you to climb in a style that transfers poorly to outdoor climbing. Add to that the fact that almost all of my, and all of my buddies', climbing-related injuries have occured on plastic, and its easy to see why the gym isn't the best outlet to train for most climbing goals. However, good climbing gyms are fun and a good place to meet other climbers. I mean, where else can I climb after work in December when its pitch dark by quarter to 5.

In reply to: Though you get really "strong" climbing indoors, the gym trains you to climb in a style that transfers poorly to outdoor climbing. Depends a lot on the setter of the routes. All the drop knee's, backsteps, hand/foot matches, etc. that you do in the gym you should try to use outdoors. Problem is that people get outside and they panic and so they forget all those moves.

Well climbing in a gym does get boring, their is nothing new it all kinda seems the same outside you have alot more oppurtiunity to try diffrent things. why hide out inside when you can go to something real and show off your tan and have some real fun?? Shit there are more women that seem to go outside as well HEHEHE

I love to climb...outside, indoors...wherever,,of course, outside is better, but gyms are important if you want to improve. In my opinion, gyms are great to get a solid backgroud, but after a couple of years, nothing compares to real rock,

If someone is lucky enough to have an opportunity to climb outdoors in December, or after work, and they still chose the gym climbing, then thats rather silly. If the demographics don't allow you to climb outside, then either you go to the gym or you don't climb at all until your next climbing trip. There a lot of climbers who don't like the gyms so much, that they will not climb at all for a few months. Was the original question referring to these climbers?

I understand you can't always climb outside, but outdoors is as good or better for training. Climbing is all about technique, not how times you can boulder around the gym or how many one armed pull ups you can do. If the gym is your only choice than go. But don't sacrifice a chance to climb outside to stay in the gym and "work on my drop knee" .

I don't like climbing gyms because they are not outside. Don't get me wrong, I love moving up the rock, but I love being outdoors just as much. Being inside and climbing takes away a lot of the fun of it for me. If the crag is snowed in, then I'll go skiing. If it's raining, then I'll do some other outdoor sport that the rain doesn't affect as much. That's how I feel, anyway. Peace, Jeff

i choose to go outside than staying inside any time of the day. But I do go outside and hike and stuff if the weather turns to poo when I am scheduled to be outside. I climb indoors during the week though since I would not be getting home till 6:00 typically and would not be arriving at my crag till 7 and sun sets at 8. It dont work for me. So i climb and get strong, BTW had a good day outdoors, i thought my project I was thinking of putting up would last until next summer for sure, if I get 2 more trips down to there it is over, i just have to finish the last move and its OVER

most outdoor climbers resent climbing gyms because the gym is trying to bottle and sell something that is so pure and free in an outdoor setting. Its just not the same.

I think that the outdoors is THE place to be. Although I do realize that not everyone is as lucky as me here in St. George, UT. Some of you have 3+ hour drives in order to get to your nearest crags. But if you live in a place where you do have the choice, then what the crap are you doin in the gyms? First off you have to pay, second you get stuck inside a smelly building with a whole bunch of spraylords who are hogging all the routes they "claim" are their warmups. But they seem to stay on them all day cause their _____ is jacked and they are taking it easy. The outdoors seem better all around. Sure the gym is a great place to train safely. Train for what though? The Outdoors. Safely? Well when you get outdoors to do the real stuff you are no longer in that safe enviroment, sooo.... how bout you train for the real thing by doing the real thing. Guess it kind of seems like rapid water kyaking in a community pool. You can practice safely there. Hey! You could even go down a water slide if they have one! Cause there is a lifeguard at the bottom! Sweet deal! St. George City Pool here I come! JK :D :D :D The Gym has it's good points.... maybe. But I have no interest.

So I live in Hawaii, where weather is never a problem. I used to live in Seattle, where REI had a big huge indoor pinnacle. I used to go climb it sometimes. It was fun. First of all, you can do laps outside. Sometimes I'll go up the same route 2-3 times in a row. Second, I think of gyms as an alternative to normal climbing. If I want to climb a little and can't make it up to the crag, then I'll climb on a retaining wall at the University (the gym here is almost as far as the crag from my place). Third, it seems to me that 'practicing' in a gym is ok, but is still qualitatively defferent than normal climbing. The exposure, the view, the sun and wind, the smell. None of these are duplicated in a gym. All of that said, I'd love to have a gym within a few minutes drive of my place so I could go crank for an hour when I've got some time, but not enough for a trip to the crag.

It's that easy to identify us? Wow. My only gripe with Gyms is that I find it easy to get injured. Then I can't climb for a long time, indoors or outdoors. Sometimes it seems silly to pay to F yourself up, but hey, some of the kids coming out of gyms and rally crank hard right off the couch. I'ts damn impressive. That alone makes me want to try and stay in some kind of shape throughout the winter. Bill
