I'd also like to point out that 5-7-5 is not the only acceptable format for haiku's. The form of poetry is from the Japanes culture, and there has been debate regarding the number of syllables to translate the form.

Also, a haiku should ideally arouse a distinct emotion, and offer a somewhat spiritual insight or image, (often involving the natural world) as opposed to a narrative of events.
