Get into Yoga. More than one person with back or knee problems has told me that the stretching and conditioning has made it possible for them to be active again. Go slow. Walk, hike, Scramble. DO NOT RUN. You'll know what you can do. Good luck. 8)

I have a friend whose back is so deteriorated that he had a piece of thigh bone inserted in place of some vertibrae and he still climbs hard. It is just a matter of desire. Build your core strength way up and your back will seldom hurt and you can do almost anything you want.

After losing control of a rappel, falling 75 feet, and shattering my lower back' in 93, I was told I may never walk again... I refused surgery and 3 days later I walked out of the Neuro-ICU ward! It slowed me down, but 10 months later I was roping up again, much to the chagrin of my wife. Since my accident, I have paddled harder whitewater and climbed harder routes. I have been able to do just about everything I did before, except bicycling and skiing have been a bit more difficult.
