You want insight? I've got some. Climbers are crazy, suicidal folk with no respect for their own lives. You climbers need to stop insanely risking your life and take up a more tame, civilized passtime, like golf or bowling. This applies equally to males and females.

You sound like my father Laugh.

I think he wants me to take up Scrable.

Hahaha, reminds me showing my parents some easy ass bouldering I've been doing while injured. I think they nearly crapped their pants looking at what most climbers would scoff at. Now THAT'S what climbing is all about.

On a side note: climb_eng is probably responsible for the best troll in this thread. I'm sorry, the_leech, you try way too hard. I see the greasy sweat, so it doesn't have that effervescent sheen the true idiot-savant can achieve. Don't get me wrong, I still think you're half-tarded, you know, touch of the Downs and all, but you've got to start huffing the gold paint more or something Wink

I'd say most women at crags aren't climbing at all, it's more like they are being towed up by their belayer. Not that there's anything wrong with top-ropeing slab on a tight rope, but i don't consider it real climbing.

People often make that comparison. But they’re wrong. I’m not like God. I am God.

But let’s get this thread back on topic.

Medicus, if you’re female, which of my categories do you fit into? I don’t think you addressed that yet. And that’s what this thread is all about.

Clee03m and RockFrog, if you’re still around, please also let us know what category applies to you. You’ve all been skirting that issue.

Okay Leech, I accept your challenge.

The Boyfriend Follower: I don't have a boyfriend.
The Histrionic (aka The Attention Seeker): I have yet to wear a halter top or a bikini.
The Serial Monogamist: I don't change the people I climb with at the crags or the gym all that often really... I have a pretty consistent group of people. They may not always be there, but rarely are new people involved, especially at the crags. Occasionally one of us will bring a new climber to the gym or something, but this is a rarity.
The Hippie: I do not have dreads, a nose ring, a piercing of any kind for that matter, or anything hemp related, and I have never smoked pot in my life. Obviously this cannot be me.

So that leaves...
The Climber: These are women who climb simply because they have a passion for climbing. There are no ulterior motivations involved here. This is the minority of women climbers.

Well... I can't really fit into the climber category either as I am not a woman. Although I climb because I have a passion for climbing, I have a very different anatomy than a female, so I just don't think I fit into this category. So it seems that I cannot fit into any category of Why Women Climb... perhaps a why Men Climb I could fit better since I have y chromosomes present in my body.

I'm assuming you mean errors like missing the "y" in they? Wink Seriously though, it's the internet. How much weight should any of us expect these statements to carry in the first place?

Well, there's why people "try" climbing, and why they "keep" climbing.

Back when I started climbing, there was little press and no gym. You tried climbing because somebody was willing to take you. That tended to influence the dynamics of who tried the sport. Before I started guiding, I took many, many folks climbing, usually for one or both of two reasons:

because I liked climbing with friends rather than strangers so I was developing partners, or because I was single and was developing relationships (or something shallower)

Now we have gyms and climbing is more high-profile. Lots more women climb now and are are introduced to the sport for different reasons than they used to be.

Why do women "keep" climbing once they've been exposed to it? Probably for the same varied reasons that guys do. I wrote about it on my website in a piece called "the rewards of climbing.

Very well written piece, karlbaba.

http://www.yosemiteclimber.com/...rds_of_Climbing.html

You articulated very well some of my thoughts about why I keep climbing, as well as some of the thoughts I've had about why those around me judge and want to rank and order other climbers. When I find myself falling into that trap of labeling others, I find that I'm falling far from my objective of being engaged in the activity in the first place.

Of which, your attention to the diverse reasons that people climb was appreciated. I seek to overcome my lack of focus in the moment. Climbing teaches me to be centered in the face of doubt and fear, and it is also an excellent adventure!

It's my journey, my learning process, and where others are on their path or how their path differs from my own really doesn't matter-- Unless they are my friends and we are exploring our day together and my concern is non-maladaptive in intent. Growth with a group is far more rewarding than a solo effort.

We are all human and I can't say I've never judged those at a busy crag, the skin lizards especially, but the more my focus on on things that don't really matter, the more I'm falling into the same category of non-authenticity that I am judging.

For the same reasons men do I should think... it's challenging, it takes your mind off other things as you focus on climbing solely; and it keeps you fit and healthy, great workout! Cool

I climb because I tried it at a conference (optional outdoor activity) and enjoyed it. When I went home I convinced my hubby to try it with me and I have gone from there. It is the only sport other than gymnastics that I have found really, well, 'right'... the kind of activity when you just can't wait to go again.

To your eyes however, I would be a 'serial monogamist'. I'm new to climbing and as my hubby isn't as interested in climbing as I am, I have been looking for alternative climbing partners for a while. I found 2 great partners (trust them to belay me, climb at around my level, free to climb when I am) both of whom were just staying in the area for a few months. I have tried 2 others and something didn't click schedule wise or I didn't feel safe with them as a belayer. Each time I turn up to the gym with a different male partner, the guys who work there give me a half smirk/'knowing' smile. I get the impression that they think I bed hop every month or so. I find it a bit insulting but I'm hardly about to go and explain my life story to them.

I guess outside observers with more imagination than facts probably consider me to be serially 'dating'Tongue.

BTW the girls I know who want male attention, go to the beach and hang out in a bikini, their legs bent and backs slightly arched to emphasise all the err 'features'. Oddly enough activities like climbing where ones thighs/butt (no matter how tiny or supermodelesque they may be) are emphasised by hanging in a harness, don't seem to be the first choice for ladies attempting to attract the opposite sex Wink

I definetly fall into the climber category... I began climbing in highschool and have been climbing for over 5 years now... I am completely dedicated to the sport... My bf happens to climb, but i actually got him started into climbing... I purely love climbing, everything about it... The physical and mental challenge, the rock, being outside, the AMAZING people, the way your hands smell, EVERYTHING.... My life would not be complete without it!

This thread has to be the awesomest example of why human beings are human beings. Half of the responders are over-the-top sarcastic, half of them are over-the-top sincere and the other half spend their time pointing out specifically why none of the content can be taken seriously.

And yet no one is reading anything other than what they want to see. It's like mass hypnosis with leech being the man they call Reveen. I always tell my new employees (writers and editors...) that no one reads this stuff anyway and they always look at me like I've blasphemed...I think I'm going to immortalize this thread as Exhibit A: A proof concerning the distinct lack of comprehension on the part of the reader when engaging in the act of reading and I bet it will be the next internet phenom!

Or maybe I'll recommend it to my partner who teaches in a professional writing program: Outline for Class 4, Why the writer should be aware that the act of stringing words together is not necessarily followed by a transference of information and ideas.

To conclude...the Leech's lesson in just what makes a homo sapien tick is awesome and we should applaud him.Of course I've already exceeded the three word, "just do it" limit that is considered understandable and acceptable by the up and coming North American reader demographic and thus all my keen observations have gone to waste.

So all I really have to say is: Fuckin A

And now, go back and read the bolded words for the real, secret consipiracy, femi-liberal, fat-headed hippie-nazi, right wing, liberal message...

Sir,

We're trying to discuss why chicks climb here. So far, Mr. Freezorburn and a few others have offered valuable input on that subject. All you have given us is mindless drivel.

Please take your "meaningful" content and your peace-encouraging ways far away from this otherwise fascinating thread. Aren't you needed in the Alpine and Ice forum?

Carry on.
