Lol, that may very well be true, which is why I added "in my experiences" to that. I just wouldn't expect to hear the term around my area in more civilized conversations... but I do live in the Bible belt. Crazy

Why a woman would climb…

When I was maybe twenty-two, I randomly picked up “Into Thin Air” in a bookstore. You know how when most people say they ‘couldn’t put a book down’ they’re really just blowhards exaggerating to make a point? Well, I literally did not put it down until I finished reading it. Which makes me, conservatively, about the four millionth person to develop an interest in mountaineering from reading Krakauer’s novel (but I actually loved Into the Wild more). I found it compelling that climbing seemed to be both physically grueling but also something that pits a climber against himself (or herself) mentally. Because climbing is not something that you can abandon if you get frustrated mid-climb – if you are hundreds of feet in the air it’s not like you can just say “okay I quit”, it places an unrelenting mental pressure on you. That mental/psychological pressure is what differentiates it from other physical activities I enjoy and it is that aspect of it which most intrigues me.

I also think, though I’m less sure about this, that climbing attracts personalities that are accustomed to, and comfortable with, solitary endeavors in nature. This is true for a lot of outdoor sports. Climbing connects you to the earth and demands single-minded focus on your physical surroundings. To do it well, you have to be attuned to your environment and responsive to subtle changes in the rock face. I submit this has the unintended consequence of making you more perceptive to life in general.

In the interests of full disclosure, I have to admit that I am a noob to climbing, having only just got my gear and still not sure about the shoes. But I’m not new to some fairly analogous activities. I spent two months backpacking through Central America by myself three years ago during which time I did an insane amount of white-water rafting and kayaking. Most of these things I did by myself. When I trekked through the rain forest, there were no men – it was just the howler monkies and me. And I did it just because it was unbelievably exhilarating, exciting and such beautiful scenery.

As for your theory that women are prowling around for men at the gym, I think it makes less sense that a woman would go looking for a man in a situation where she is likely to be sweating, hair coming out of the ponytail, limbs akimbo – it’s pretty inelegant. Especially if a woman’s new to climbing – that’s the last thing a woman would want a guy to see if she’s interested in him. So if a woman is there…and she’s climbing…chances are she’s has a motive other than turning the gym into a singles scene.

And if having a nice ass is the way to keep dingus’ focus on the climb and keep my nice ass from falling off the mountain, then I am more than happy to oblige…

I think his categories are pretty dead on. Percentages might vary from region to region though. There are probably a few other categories we could think to add on. The Feminist category was a good add. That one sounded about right too.

There are also similar categories that show lots of male climbers in a bad light.

But why is everyone getting bent out of shape on this? These categories don't have to be static. It doesn't matter where you start out it matters where you end up. Every one of the other categories have the ability to become Climbers and I say good luck to each and every one of them.

Good point. I think we can put clee03m into that category.

Just to clarify, there’s nothing wrong with feminism. I consider myself a feminist by its true definition. But every ideology has its annoying whiners, as seen above.

That’s an excellent point. In SoCal, for example, it’s common to see The Histrionic. In places like Porkland, Oregon, you’re more likely to see The Hippie or The Feminist.

Great discussion, everyone. Carry on.

So if a woman doesn't have a nice enough ass, do your belay skills go down in accordance with the quality of the ass? Like if she has the infamous cottage-cheese-like fat, misshapen ass, you what? Drop her on her head?

Actually that sounds more like the FemiNazi breed IMO.

Also you should add something about never shaving (nothing wrong with that, just don't expect me to dine-in anytime soon), and the lack of overall hygiene to propogate odors necessary for keeping in touch with their feminine "essence". Perhaps the use of "essence" in reference to dank odors could even be directly linked to the FemiNazi.

I'm trying to figure out why this discussion is even important...Let's study the psycology behind the_leech's desire to categorize women climbers.

He either is:
A) A"Leech"Intimidated by women who are better climbers than he is and feels the need to rationalize it into a sex war instead of just accepting the possibility that some women are gifted athletes who enjoy climbing.

B)An extremely serious climber or the "ClimberCentric" who doesn't like to see people climbing who are not as serious about it as he is, i.e. "The Boyfriend Follower". Usually intimidated by the fact that other guys have girlfriends that like to hang out with them.

C) Has nothing better to do in his spare time than further create stereotypes, misrepresentations, and discord. Most commonly categorized as "Someone I never want to meet" or "The Problem".

Who cares what people's motivations are for climbing, that's not what it's about. I'm not ranting because your "labels" struck a cord, I'm ranting because your entry was unintelligent, worthless, and unneccessary.

Well I see it must have struck a cord with you or you wouldn't have replied so childishly. You proved to me to have the exact personality I thought you would have. Closed minded, quick to judge, macho male, who doesn't care about anything beyond the needs of himself. I wasn't trying to be original, I was mocking you so you might realize how stupid you sound, but apparently that didn't work because you're still talking out of your ass. If anyone's a waste of time, it's you.

If you think Peace Corps volunteers are simply Unemployed American Liberals you don't know a fucking thing about it. You're the reason the world needs volunteers, but I'm sure you don't understand that.

You know nothing about me, Frogger. What if I told you I am a liberal-leaning social worker who spent a year in VISTA service, where I was a full-time volunteer who helped homeless and mentally ill senior citizens living on skid row. Could you accept that? Probably not. Hippies love to judge, stereotype, and discount those who don't conform to their narrow view of the world.

Now go make another t-shirt, you Unemployed Misguided American Liberal Hippie.

I was just curious and in need of something to respond to.

Anyway, your a bit off-base calling me Rush unless he recently decided to support Libertarian views. I'll take shot in the dark and say that you assumed (big suprise) that I am anti-feminist. In all reality, me reclassifying his feminist comments as referring to "feminazis" simply says that I believe he was describing the extremists of the group, rather than those women who have an earnest interest in greater equality between genders. I followed with a stab at that demographic because I don't really like them, unlike feminists who I have no problem with.

I'll take one more moment to address your AM radio comment, but I'll not waste anymore time after. I wouldn't be caught dead listening to any of that political shit, because as you said its bullshit propaganda. Furthermore I'm not numb enough to care what either the conservatives or the liberals have to say or believe in. I support libertarian views because they are the closest thing to what I believe. I just happen to believe in true liberty and that appears to be more than you can say for yourself.

Peace.
Colby.
