I am a newbi climber from CT moving to Chicago, I would like to create a thread where people can announce when and where they are climbing and see if anyone would like to come, this is what I and a friend of mine have been doing in CT. I mainly do bouldering now since I know nothing of the knots but I am still learning and wouldn't mind any advice or criticism. If anyone sees a guy bouldering in a gym with a tattoo on his left wrist or a wrist band on his left wrist covering the tattoo my name is Mike or Rigoli pick your poison. Thanks hope to start a community -Mike Rigoli

Hey Mike... Just a little hint. This is "community" which is the cess pool of rc.com. Try re-posting this in the "partners" section of the site. Take it easy, Josh

I'm not sure if you'd be up for it, but right now a buddy of mine and I, plus a third guy and a few others on occasion, head up to Devil's Lake every weekend to climb on Sundays. We don't boulder per se, though the area we're interested in right now has some bouldering (Pseudo Hawk's Nest on the East Rampart). We go the Libertyville Sports Complex during the week. We're *always* happy to meet other climbers, and to teach and help out, as our "group" consists of climbers with a couple years of heavy expereince as well as ones who are just starting out. We've worked on some specific projects lately, so if you can bring your own rope to drop that would be ideal, but either way I'm sure we could accommodate. If you've got a good attitude and like to have fun climbing, let me know! ***This goes for anyone in the Chicago area. If you can make it up to the 'burbs by 7am, have a harness and ATC, and can proffer up a couple bucks in gas money, I'm happy to drive and have a house you can safely leave your vehicle at just off highway 94 (I can only take 1-2 more people right now unless you want to stow yourself in the trunk). We might start camping on Saturday nights and getting on the rock at dawn instead of driving 6-7 hours in one day.

I too would love to join. I just moved here from Ohio about a month ago. I miss the short 4 hour drive to the new and the 5.5 hour drive to the red. I would love to check these places out. Even better...I drive a Jetta TDI which on road trips gets about 65 mpg so a trip there and back would be nothing in my car...something to think about...you can contact me under the name kaymanism on ANY of the major chat services... look forward to hearing from you guys ... i miss the outdoor climbing for sure

I'm moving to Hyde Park in a month (GF is going to UChi and I'm following along for the ride) and I'm looking to get up to the lake and to SoIll as well. Also happen to drive a hyper-efficient jetta TDI, though 65 mpg is a bit optimistic, that would win the monthly fuel economy competition on tdiclub.com most months. I have a place in western KY that is about 1-1.5 hours from a lot of the soill stuff, so it's a good base camp for weekends, though it is farther south. Not there yet, but hoping for a good fall at the lake and maybe some nice winter weekends in soill :D

hey, i go to school in downers grove, IL and i would love to join the party to climb at Devil's Lake. Ill pitch in for some gas money too. I've only done top roping and i have my own equipment (for the most part), harness, shoes, lots of carabiners, belay device, and a rope, but my experience is limited as i've only been climbing for a little over a month now. I will be back in the illinois area at the very beginning of september, and I have Sunday's free. Also, regarding Devil's Lake, does anybody know if there are bolts already bolted into the rocks so that a top rope can be set up? or do we need to set up an anchor rope and a top rope off of that? Thanks everyone. Jae S

In reply to: Also, regarding Devil's Lake, does anybody know if there are bolts already bolted into the rocks so that a top rope can be set up? or do we need to set up an anchor rope and a top rope off of that? Yes, you need to setup your own anchor - there is only 1 or 2 bolts in the entire park - they are generally highyl frowned upon. Many climbs can have anchors of just slunb trees and rocks. Having even a basic set of nuts and hexes will do wonders.

In reply to: kiteandclimb Top Roper Location: Chicago, IL 35 posts added since 24 May 2005 Online Posted: 16 Jun 2005 20:09 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The nice thing about DL is you really don't need much to climb 85% of the climbs if you're top roping. You just need to know what to use where. Some long webbing - about 8 pieces (1-40ft, 2-30ft, 2-15ft, 3-10ft) to get around any large boulder or nearby tree, some nuts/hexs (get a set) and a couple cams (one large, one med) and you're pretty much good. You should be able to set any rope with that. Of course you need some locking biners to double up at the anchors and rope, as well. You can even get an extra piece of webbing and probably save yourself the money for a cam. This would get you three anchors. Of course you still need the screwlock Ds and locking biners for the rope. But you really don't need much for a basic DL toprope "rack". Last weekend while walking the top I saw some guys climbing on only two anchors with non locking biners (only one on each anchor!) with a single sling balanced between them. I don't think this is very smart at all! I would suggest that even if you think you know what you're doing but never had anyone show you, or are new, ask around and learn from everyone you can. Three anchors, three webbings, three screwgate Ds or two opposing non-screwgates for the anchors and two opposing biners on the rope and have your buddy check your placements as a minimum. Lets be safe out there!

I think a mailing list is yet another place to have to deal with - thats what some of the stickied threads are for in this forum (or new threads).. Plus, new memebers won't necessarily know about it. If anything, try to con the powers of rc.com to create a Chicagoland sub-forum, that would be nice and beneficial.. Or better yet, a "Devils Lake/Chicagoland".. But even then, I don't think there would be enough threads to warrant it - especially since there are threads going back to july 15th on the same page - it's not hard to miss a thread.

i think a mailing list is a pretty good idea. a sticky thread gets too long and cumbersome, and poeple don't check it. if its an email list poeple get something more immediatly noticable, which would be much better for organizing anything. pm sent.

it seems to me that a common them around chicago is lack of partners, lack of accessibilty to crags, and working too much to make the weekend trip to DL/RRG. i was hoping that if we could get an email list together, and send out an email to meet for drinks, we could discuss some of these issues. the chicago climbing community is an odd one - and very fractured. there are those that solely climb in gyms and compete, some sport climb, some of us live only for trad trips out west, while others enjoy going to DL or RRG for whatever: bouldering, TR, or trad. We are sorely in need of some organization. I know i don't just speak for myself when i say that lack of a consistent partner is the main reason i don't go climbing enough. and i just think that enough of us could get together at some point, there would be a much higher probability of getting out more often. i'm not saying that we should have weekly meetings or anything like that, but having some type of climbing "club" wouldn't be too far-fetched. almost every other sport around here does. Hell, there's even a cricket club at U of C!! and climbing, by it's very nature, is a social, or at least a 2-person activity. we had a climbing club at my undergrad, USC, and it worked out great. i think i'd be a good thing to meet other people who are into climbing, and especially interested in climbing outside, other than the people at my gym. i'm not even advocating something SO organized -maybe just meet up every couple of months, see who can plan some trips, have some beers, meet some people and i think it would lead to everyone climbing more. the problem now, as i see it, is that even though it seems there are always people looking for rides to DL or somewhere or looking for a partner, i don't think things ever really happen all that often. part of the issue is that this is the internet and climbing with someone (or just meeting up with someone) who you only know from email can be akward or uncomfortable, even for someone as desperate as me. and i've actually climbed with some of you after meeting on the internet, but of course it was akward at first. but if we agree to all meet up at some point, and do so on some semi-regular basis, i think it would be a lot easier process for everyone. unfortunately, we don't live in boulder or seattle were we meet others climbers at school or work and where we can climb after 5pm and be home for dinner. we live in chicago where the nearest climbing is 3hrs away and the nearest GOOD climbing 7hrs. it seems like a lot of us tend to work a lot, or at least have family obligations that make even a weekend trip tough sometimes. i think being a little more organized and at least meeting face-to-face can help overcome some of these obstacles. we could carpool, share gear, share campsites, split gas money, etc.... and i'm not even talking about having this be some big climbing club that rotuinely takes out a bunch of newbies and does a lot of teaching. i'm strictly for just meeting up and making friends of people of your similar ability and interest level so that we have partners and phone numbers of people that we have actually MET in real life. does this resonate with anybody, or am i completely off base? i'm interested to get some feedback. aaron bertalmio@hotmail.com 773.419.7834

I definitely agree with aaron. i think it's a great idea. being somewhat new to the sport, and being in a city like Chicago, it was really hard for me to find partners. i am being totally serious when i say i basically forced some of my friends to try it, and luckily, they loved it. and other than rc.com or maybe an organized outdoor outing with VE or something, i don't know how i really would have met more experienced climbers to go with, and i think i am a pretty outgoing person. RC provides a great place for people to contact others, but I think getting a group together more often would def create a more cohesive bunch, and a more realistic chance of a lot more climbing! again, i think it's super idea, for those new to the sport and those who are just looking for other folks to climb with. like aaron said, it's a 2 person activity - minimum - and climbers tend to be social and laid back people from those i have met...so why not make more friends in chicago AND find more partners to climb with?? hope this makes sense.... that all being said, i am moving to colorado in two weeks, so PM me if any of ya'll are out there and want to do some climbing around the denver/boulder area...

i understand where you're coming from, in that chicago's climbing community is very fragmented. i suppose that i didn't initially understand the underlying cause for this gathering, to find climbing partners, because i've always been a proponent of variety. between comps (in IL, WI, MI, & IN) and climbing at different gyms (mainly Hidden Peak, Lakeshore, and friends' homewalls. VE, LPAC, & Fitplex on rarer occasion), i've met many people. i have a pool of partners for bouldering, a pool of partners for sportclimbing, a smaller pool for trad, and an even smaller pool for ice--all with various overlaps, of course. maybe it's important to note that i don't mind not having a "regular partner." maybe that's what should be emphasized at the gyms, especially for beginners or those new to the area? beginners, and those new to the area, know of the gym that they start at but, seemingly, rarely go elsewhere. if, like other cities, chicago's community wasn't fractured, that'd be fine. however, it is. if people would be willing to go to new places and be 'the new face' while willing to introduce themselves, maybe this wouldn't be such a problem. (of course, as a business, climbing gyms want to keep their client/customer base so i can't see them pushing their membership to go elsewhere.) anyway, i'm up for meeting new people. just holler.

hell yeah, i think this is leading in a good direction. i'm not personally looking for partners, i have a fairly strong partnership and when i can't go with him i usually go out for some rope soloing. but i would LOVE a larger sense of 'community' amongst our limited and fragmented bunch of chicago climbers. i think it would be allot of fun making some more friends, and spending more time drinking beer while talking climbing. i think it would also be fun to organize some larger group trips out to the lake, and steve and i can definitly be persuaded into taking people out to the lake to help get them into trad. with work, family and being so far away from rock it can be hard to keep yourself plugged into the climbing world. but ya know, we have allot of bars around here, and filling them up with climbers will go a long ways to keeping myself a little closer to the climbing world.

Although not necessarily the same - there is the Chicago Mountaineering Club.. They meet most weekends it seems up at DL. I climbed with them once, but I thought the group (aka mob) was way to big... 50 (or more) climbers all getting split up into 3 groups for a huge climber gathering.. I prefer smaller groups - like no more than 6 or 7 people - the 15 or so people in our group was a bit too crazy.

Guys this would be great. I was earlier in Minnesota, the climbing community in the twin cities is pretty well organized. We have organized trips to DL, devils tower and places close by. They have a website for that too. Check out www.minnesotaclimbing.com. Those guys are planing a weekend trip to DL in oct. I'm usually looking for partners to go to DL on weekends. I'm ready for anytype of group activity, outdoor or indoor. In the meatime lets group up and plan a gathering of our own, like aaron suggested. Let me know Adi singadi@iit.edu

LOL! toproping club. ah, sad but true. i wasn't gonna say it (so im glad someone else did)... i'm getting a lot of people's email addresses, so expect a mass email soon. anyone got suggestions for a bar or general area - northside cafe was a good one. i'm thinkin we should keep it around the near north (bucktown, wicker park, lakeview) - any suggestions?

well, what does this crowd like? beers? mixed drinks? scotch? outdoor seating? i'm down in the Loop so i'd be partial to somewhere close like Fado or Rock Bottom, but how about the Duke of Perth? seriously, i'm open to other suggestions, but you did ask :)

This may be a partial hijack, but I'll take my lumps for it, and yes I have searched already. I'm moving to chicago in 2 weeks, and I'm looking for a gym. I'm going to be living in Hyde Park (GF goes to UChi), have a car, and have somewhat flexible work hours so I won't necessarily be trying to get from work to the gym in the middle of rush hour all the time. I know I'm near the retaining wall, but I need a winter spot. What gyms do you guys think I should check out?

Are all the routes at DL trad? I just got into climbing (about 2 months- but I looovve it) and have done gym and sport, but do not have experience with trad climbing. I would really like to head up to DL for a day this long weekend. Anyone willing to let a beginner tag a long? I have a car! Ami

Oh, and I think that a get together is a great idea. If you haven't been able to get a list together, how about just setting a time and date? Or maybe you already did that, and I missed that email. Can you remind me?

I recently got back into rock climbing and I am still fairly new to the chicago area. I currently climb at the Lincoln Park Athletic Club (LPAC) and would like to find someone to climb with on a regular basis. Climbers there are great about helping out but it gets old having to always ask someone for a ride. I try to climb 3 or 4 times a week in the evenings and the weekends. I would not be opposed to trying out other facilities. If anyone is interested please let me know. I also have some free passes to LPAC if anybody wants to try it out. Please feel free to add me to the chicago climbers email list. thanks, josh jthenderson AT gmail.com

We sure are having a mighty hard time getting together a time and place. I think someone should just pick a day and a time, and put it on the thread. Email it too, if you want, but imagine a newcomer to rock climbing, much like the rest of us, hops on this website, and sees a conversation about all of us meeting somewhere, but doesn't actually get to see where or when. I say, the more the merrier. On another note, what do you say about a massive Halloween trip to DL? We can make it a party, get out there on Friday, and have two full days of climbing (but since we will have multiple cars, it can be flexible). What do people say about October 28. As time goes on, we can send out reminders, and at some point get a head count, and get some camping space, and some jungle juice, and climb and drink the weekend away! What do you think?!?! We can switch to MP or JF if you all prefer! The more I think about this, the more excited I am getting!

that is an amazing idea that would be so fun, i would totally be up for that and i would totally take off work to go :) as for the getting things sorted out maybe we should make a like chat on AIM or MSN or even IRC that way we can discuss plans in real time, the only problem with that would be finding a time when everyone could do it or whatnot.

come one, come all... tired of not having a reliable belay partner? tired of taking 20 ft. whippers? tired of the cold shoulder and the singles bars? then meet fellow chicago climbers for a get-together and, of course, beer at: Tuman's 2159 w. chicago (wicker park/ukrainian village area) http://metromix.chicagotribune.com/search/44326,0,753292.venue Wednesday, Sept. 13, 6:00 this is your chance to make new friends, find new climbing partners, and discuss climbing trip possibilities over some drinks - cause everyone knows that the best plans are made while inebriated... oh, and feel free to send this to anyone you think may be interested... aaron WARNING: DRINKING IS AN INHERENTLY DANGEROUS ACTIVITY that may result in serious injury or death. how about sometime during the weekend? like, maybe the weekend of october 15? there's lots of time until then for people to work something out and get together, in my opinion or, everyone can meet at ve, and then head off somewhere after some climbing? i am suggesting ve mostly because it is the largest gym in the area and almost everyone is familiar with the place. if not, we can try to plan for carpools, or perhaps another gym to meet at.

if we set up another meet & greet, might i suggest a time that doesnt coincide with rush hour (~4:30-6pm). that's the reason I didn't make it to the last meet, because I live in the west suburbs 20 miles from downtown chicago and I didn't want to bother driving through the traffic at 5:30pm.

Is there any particular area where a majority of us live or work? If we knew that we could find some place that would be easy for a bunch of people to get to. I live in the west suburbs, but work in the Loop, so anywhere in the Chicago metro area works well for me. There are plenty of bars in the Lincoln Park and Lakeview neighborhoods of Chicago. Anyone else have any suggestions?

i both live and work near the Loop (kinda West Loop, kinda River North). as for timing, i would prefer that the social gathering not encroach on my weekend time on the rock. if the majority wants weekends, i say go for it and have a drink for me :)

The Lincoln Park and Metro area sound fine, but there is the traffic problema nd the parking problem. What the F? I say we all meet in Evanston at Nevin's. It's next to my house and the peeps from the city can take the purple line. The point about not driving trough rush hour is a very good point. I do not like driving through rush hour from Mundelein (work). Oct. 15th is no good. I'll be in the Gunks. Or, we could just meet via region. The peeps from the west can meet, the peeps fromt he North can meet, the peeps from the south can meet and the peeps from the east can just drive their fancy-shmancy cars to where-ever (sorry, I'm bitter because I'm poor). Ok. Gotta teach.

Okay, there's no way to please everyone in this whole get-together thing. I must say that I think meeting on the weekend is NOT the best idea because some of us are hoping to make a few weekend trips over the next month or so. In fact, I was hoping to meet some people to do that with at one of these bar gatherings. Meeting up via region is a good idea. Otherwise people are just going to bitch about inconvenient location, travel time, etc. Alternatively, we can just pick different locations every couple of weeks. If someone misses a gathering, then he/she can hit the next one. I guess my point is that we don't have to limit ourselves to one gathering in one particular neighborhood. That being said, the loop or Lakeview/Lincoln Park area are good for me

I am an ex-midwesterner. Grew up in Valpo, IN and spent a couple of years in the city/burbs of Chicago. I am now living outside of Boulder, CO. Come visit some time. I get back to the region around holidays and am always looking to pull plastic while in town. I'll be back a couple days before thanksgiving and a week or so after x-mas. Drop me a line if you're looking for a partner around those times or if you make it to CO. Funny somebody mentioned the Northside in bucktown as a meeting place, I used to go there a bunch. Is ear wax, the bongo room and subterrian still open? Cheers - KT

Just to keep the ball rolling: I'm in the city, more or less just NW of downtown. It sounds like there are actually quite a few people in the downtownish area. Tuman's wasn't a bad idea, as there is usually street parking...Twisted Spoke (Grand&Ogden) is another near-downtown place that's easy access from train and by car...just throwing out ideas. Also: weekdays are probably a better idea for meetup times, as long as the weather remains as awesome as it has been lately...

It's been almost a month and a half since the last post on this thread. Has it died? Is anyone looking for a partner for gym climbing in the Chicagoland area? I live just NW of the Loop (Chicago stop on the blue line) and am looking for partners. I can lead and lead belay as well. Send me a PM. [Added] I have a car and am willing to drive out to the suburbs to climb. (For the record, Orland Park (I assume the LTF there) isn't too far for me.)

My partner and I did a nice day trip up to Devil's Lake on Saturday. I got three nice leads in and then my partner aided upper diagnol in the rain after dark. It was great! I did have one lousy experience though. Fi I was leading Berkely, which I've done many times, and I was just about at the halfway point and six feet above my last piece--a yellow HB offset. I had a nice stance and was looking to place another piece when I got nailed by a falling rope that was thrown from above. Luckily I was in a nice spot and it didn't knock me off balance. Anyway, I was pissed and yelled "CLIMBING" as loud as I could. I was tempted to pull the guys rope but I cooled myself off and kept climbing. As I was up higher I looked down and the rope-thrower was down there. I yelled at him but it was windy and he couldn't hear me. Tim told him what had happened. That is, we didn't hear anybody yell rope and even so you should always look before you throw down a rope. He went on to add that I could have taken a nasty little fall if it did knock me off the rock. Fair enough, I'm sure this has happened to many people but we just wanted to reinforce looking and yelling before throwing. Well this jerk said, "I yelled rope and I've lead out here before so I don't see what the problem is." No apology whatsoever! If I hit someone with rope/gear/whatever I would certainly apologize. Not this guy though. He showed real class! Other than that it was a great day of climbing.

big bump So, where are all the Chicago Climbers? If I'm in the city visiting friends on the weekend, what sort of options do I have down there? Anything besides Hidden Peak?

I thought this might be the best place to post a request for climbing partner(s) in or near Chicago. I'm going to be in Chicago from June 8-June 16 or so. I'd like to get out to climb for a while, preferably that Monday-Friday (6/12-16). I'll have a tent and other camping gear with me, so distance isn't a big concern; however, I'd like to be back in the city the following weekend. I have my own crash pad for bouldering. I'd love to try some sport (never used a rope outdoors), but I have no gear except for a harness. PM me if this is a possibility. I'd be willing to drive down to SoIll to meet people or another crag that might be within 3-4 hours drive (camping obviously). --BJ

I live in Lakeview, been there for almost a year and I have YET to find any climbing etc. I don't have a car so getting OUT of the city is hard but I can fly pretty much anywhere for free. I moved here from Alaska so I'm desperate....EVEn just some gym climbing! All of my gear is in AK but I could get some basic stuff for here, harness, ATC, shoes etc Hit me up if you know any climbing, gyms, would be willing to take the itme to show me, perhaps need a partner? Thanks

Vertical Endeavors is a good gym. I can meet you there almost any time this week. Let me know if you want to check it out.

Thanks Juno, you haven't been looking hard enough. If you live in Lakeview, then you must have seen the outdoor wall at Lincoln Park Athletic Club. It can't get any closer to you than that. Other options for climbing walls in the city are: Hidden Peak and Lakeshore Athletic Club. I hear there are walls at the Fitplex and Xport gyms too, but I've never been. VE is nice, but its out in the burbs. Climb On is also nice, located in Homewood just a short Metra ride away. You can PM me if you want more details.

Hi, I'm new to the forum. 35 y.o. male, Buffalo Grove, IL (NW burbs)... mechanical engineer, husband, father, climber. I've been out of climbing for a several years now, but have rekindled the hobby and have been climbing a lot once again. I've been getting back on the rocks and plastics to get myself ready for a Devil's Tower summit climb (with a guide) I hope to make this fall. My outdoor climbing has been in Southern Illinois (Go Salukis!!) and Devils Lake, WI. I climb indoors at the Libertyville Sports Complex. Anyone interested in a fall Wyoming roadtrip with me? -Glenn

well this thread is ripe with contacts for myself. starting next week ill be sending out PM because this weekend I already have a trip with some buddies planned. I could take people to some sweet climbs...lead trad, follow trad, show people how to setup TR anchors, let people follow my trad, pitch in for gas money. I'm out in Hoffman Estates/Schaumburg/Elk Grove area VERY VERY close to I90 rite by Woodfield Mall. I just don't have a very reliable car. For a ride to Devil's Lake I would be a mentor, but I leave for College down to U of I on the 23rd so I only have like 2 weekends tat I'm really looking to get my fill of the Lake and say goodbye to it for 9 months or so. PM me if you feel inclined, I'd like to get out there August 5th and/or the following weekend. Or I'll PM you starting next week. edit, P.S. I lead up to 5.9, TR or follow up to 5.10c

If this weekend isn't too short of notice I just had a trip with some buddies fall through and I am dying to get out to say goodbye to the Lake for the next 9 months as I'm leaving for college August 19th. I have all my own gear as well and my climbing is hitting the solid 10s or trading 5.8 or 5.9 Is anyone interested in this weekend or next? I'm in Hoffman Estates/Schaumburg/Elk Grove area right by the I90/I290 Intersection. As well as showing outdoor newbies some great climbing at Devil's Lake or letting people follow my trad to learn or showing people how to set up top ropes...I'd love to show my partners this awesome swimming hole and cliff jumping spot in the area. I'm 18, about to be 19. Looking desperately for a pertner. PM me. Reply to this thread. Do something. I need to get outside. peace curtis
