I'm kidding
But this story scares the crap out of me. I just recently started leading trad, and I know that if I'd fallen on any of those shit pieces I've been placing, I would've decked. Of course, I haven't led anything harder than 5.7, so there's almost no chance of falling and testing my badly placed gear.
So I have a question for all you Trad Asses.
What's the best way to test your gear, to know if it's bomber or not?
I mean . . . I THINK it's good when I'm placing it. But how do you ever know unless you fall on it? Just curious.

That's a funny one   Most people don't plan to wreck their car 50 yards from their front door. Yet, that is where many accidents occur.
So, what makes you think you won't fall on a 5.7? If you can at least admit you are soloing, you might be ahead of the game..

hey, crimpandgo.
i totally admit i'm soloing on those 5.6s and 5.7s i've been "leading" at j-tree and tahquitz.
my question was, how do i know when i've gotten good enough at placement to actually be protecting myself? should i jump and test it?

As a follow up to GraniteGod's advice to wear a helmet I'd like to add another piece of advice:

-Take a wilderness first aid class and learn to clear a spine. Had someone on site done a simple spinal exam they probably would have realized that something was amiss and had this guy taken to the local ER to get checked out.

But for those who are accusing people they have never met of ignorance, as someone else already said: pot, meet kettle.

This is good advice not just for climbers but for all hoods in the woods. However, field exams do not always reveal everything. Which was my case and I why went in just in case.
