You're climbing moderate trad, so you are almost always able to avoid falling. If you ever intentionally take on climbs that are above your limit -- that is, where you will almost certainly fall -- then I think you will discover the benefit of rehearsed of falls.

Jay

Actually, I climb quite frequently over my limit on both trad and sport, and I take plenty of falls.

I can see how taking intentional falls could benefit those who don't possess much natural athleticism, particularly agility, but for people who are used to making very quick decisions/reactions while in motion and/or in the air, falling should not be a problem. You visualize how you want to react beforehand in order to "pre-train" in your reaction. My first fall was fine, and so has been every one since.

BZZZZT!!!
Wrong.

I call s---.

I have been falling in various disciplines all my life, was a fair athelete in high school and college, and what you are claiming is just stupid.

You are an idiot, take your seat on the short bus.

Agreed...total BS!!

I'm really just amazed that jt512 has actually advocated the use of a GriGri.

Update -

The rope was contaminated with SULFURIC ACID according to chemical testing. The owner apparently was very responsible in his care for said line, until.....

One day, while racking his gear, he laid the coiled product on a parking lot.

There was no indication of damage prior to incident. I would say that he is darn lucky it happened in the gym and not the crag.

The report is a good read--and an excellent analysis, IMO.
