How many of you who think helmets only protect you from pebbles falling from above have ever heard a helmet smacking against the cliff or the deck? How many of you have heard a skull hitting the deck or the cliff? Fortunately I've only heard a helmet. That guy decked from about 15 feet up and hit his head on a rock on the bottom of the climb. The helmet made a sickening sound against the rock. I don't think he climbed anymore that day but he did walk away on his own. I shudder to think what I would have seen if his bare melon hit that rock instead. I don't understand how people justify not wearing a helmet because it is not the solve all for every conceivable type of disaster.

Do you not wear your seatbelt because if a Mack truck T-bones your escort you're going to be dead with or without it?

i got done with a climb and my partner was getting halfway up it with his brother on belay and his foothold came completely off. it must have been like a square foot of rock and it came right for me and his brother. luckly we dodged it but im a believer now in helmets for belayers and climbers.

I think it is just as important for the belayer to wear the helmet as the guy leading the route. I personally own a helmet and thank god it has never been put to the test. A few weeks ago i was climbing in red river gorge and a large chunk broke off from under my feet. it was about the size of a dinner plate and close to 2 inches thick. It missed my belayer by less than a foot. luckily it didn't hit him..i was looking at a good 50 or so foot grounder if he was knocked out..you never know what is going to happen!!!!! wear your brian bucket!!
