A lonely Professor # 3 ( problem solved)

Can't Post

A university professor (leading expert in South American blue jay) decided to go and check out the new nest by a dry waterfall. His plan was to rappel 700 feet on the face of the dry waterfall.

Based on the info he collected from couple of climbing forum just few days before his adventure , there were rap bolts every 80 feet.

Once he downloaded the topo of the dry waterfall and did his math work , he discovered that by using a single 60 meter rope (using both side), he could rap down and reach every bolt and still have 4-5 meters of extra rope at the end.

So professor took

1-60 meter rope (each rap stations are @ 80 feet apart)
1- knife
1- flashlight
1- ATC
2- Locking Biner

On early Monday, professor headed to see the blue jays. A hot summer day with no climbers around, professor decided to go naked so he ran his rope thru the first rappelling ring and slowly descended to rap # 8.

Once he got some confidence with ATC, he rapped to station # 7, again every thing was looking cool. When professor got ready to rap to station # 6 where the bule jay nest were , he did not notice any chain link or bolts .

Since professor is not in to climbing and normally does not read the message board on the parking lot, There was a big note that said:

“ Attention all climbers, as of Sunday $%/&^/*7, due to loose bolts on rap # 4 and # 6, the chain links are removed , you need two 60 meter rope to rap ”.

Professor is sitting on the ledge 200 feet below the top and 500 feet above the base with his 60m rope on his hand naked. Next rap station is 170 feet below him. The waterfall is as shinny as a mirror (no holds, no cracks). Climbers are returning to waterfall 14 days from now.

What is the plan?

Hmm. So he can slowly and painstakingly ascend back up to rap station #7, where he will have bolts but still be 80' from the top. He doesn't have anything with him that will allow him to climb up the last 80'.

Once back to station 7 he can fix the rope and rappel single line to station 6 with it's intact bolts, but then his line is tied so that would just leave him 500' off the deck and kinda 280' from the top.

He's basically screwed. With what you've given, I don't really see a way out. Did you leave something out, or is this just to illustrate to us n00bs how bringing the bare essentials can bite you?

His best bet is to stay at station 7 where it will be easier for someone to rescue him from the top.

I think you mentioned dry waterfall too much, so the answer lies in that sentence, somehow, or that my $.02

He can use his two lockers to haul himself back up with a garda hitch, then use his knife to cut the sheath off his rope, then use the inner strands to make a rope twice as long and half as thick.

He pulled the 60 meter rope, how do you want him to ascent ?

he is all alone on the ledge, no rope above him, nothing, nada.

If any one solves this, you will get a free dinner from me

Actually you just reminded me of a knot I learned in Tahquitz, after a fist fight with my climbing partner. I had to find a new partner for the next day as we were not climbing together, and this guy I met showed me a single strand knot, that through a series of weaving knots at the top, released the entire rope.

Needless to say, I found that sketchy as I did this partner, so me and my normal climbing forgave each other over some whiskey and sketchy stories...

but that knot would be cool to actually know, and see if it would work.

I don't believe all the details are laid out here.

Is there a nice ledge to stand on at each rap station (like your drawing) on this mirrored wall? The professor must of at least already figured out how to use the end of the rope to anchor in at station #7 while he pulled rope and resetup for next rap.

The chains are gone, no hangers, nothing?

anyone else just think he should jump for being a moron?...if he's a professor he should be familiar with natural selection, and anyone retarded enough to do this should probably be dead....ya thats right I took the easy way out...

realistically, I'd call McGyver and ask what I could make with a flashlight, knife, rope and two pieces of metal, he could probably fabricate some kind of helicopter given these useful supplies.....I mean I once saw him make a bomb out of gum, a sock, a knife and a battery.

He got to a ledge with no bolts and pulled the rope anyway? It must be a rather spacious ledge. Like camping size. Otherwise he'd never have pulled the rope.

So he's 160' from the top, 500 feet from the bottom. There aren't any bolts around and he's 80 more feet above the rap stations that will get him home tonight.

He needs to find something on that ledge to sling. It's a big ledge, maybe there's trees or something. He's got 40 extra feet of rope he can cut off and use to sling something.

But you still need the whole thing doubled to release it. And I've gotten a ton of shit from the safety police around here for even mentioning it before.

I like the creative writing! :)

And a couple of the answers, living in the nest being the best.

If the rope is dynamic and the anchor good, you could bomb a factor 2 through the missing anchor and resume back to half rope raps.

if the rap stations are every 80 ft then wouldn't he be 180 feet from the top at the most?

First you would tie one of the lockers to the end of the rope, then drop the entire rope down to rap station 5. Swing the rope around until you get the locker to latch onto a bolt. Then have a super fun FF2. Repeat as necessary!

Stop changing your story.

You said that all the raps are 80' apart. The exception is that anchor 6 is gone. Unfortunately he's standing on a ledge at 6 and needs to figure out how to get to 5 with no bolted anchor. Then, it's 80' raps after that.

This is doable if the ledge has some sort of feature that 40 feet of rope can sling.

Actually, if you're familiar with a sheepshank you could do it. You can actually cut one of the middle strands and the know will hold as long as it's weighted, but then when you let off weight it comes undone and you only have a foot, maybe foot and a half left and the rest comes on down. Just make sure you don't cut the wrong strand.

Exactly, but he's standing on a ledge with no anchor and the rope is coiled in his hands. He's not in a position to ascend back to the top.

situation never happened. he doens't have a harness (he was naked) and sure as hell isn't going to body rappel naked.

Or he could take the chance and pretend its a deep water solo. rap down as far as he could and jump into the water.

First few raps were 80 feet , he used the 60 meter rope to get down then pulled one end ,except from where he is now ( chain/bolt) next rap is 170 feet below him with nothing in the middle
