Doing a very informal survey. What do you think is the most fun/entertaining/good feeling part of going to the gym... the loud, shirtless guy with his unholy physique on V10 boulder problems? The busty babe wearing a sports bra traversing back and forth over your route? The enthusiasm of excited children throwing their chalk balls at each other? Let me know. thanks.

You're focusing on the annoying parts. The best part about the gym is the same thing as the best part about climbing outdoors. The people you climb with.

decking your buddy because he slipped on his 2nd clip....you made him laugh while he was making it...he weighs 50 pounds more then you do...while dangerous, (and a one time thing), that will only ever happen in a gym...

This was mostly a parody thread. The gym bashing around here gets really tired and I thought the original thread needed a counter. For me the gym is largely social (finding out what people have been up to, what projects have been sent outside, whipper stories etc.) and a workout after work or if it's raining on the weekend (which happens a lot in BC).

Personally, I really like the gym. I realize I will get flamed on this site because of this statement, but I am who I am. Would I rather be outside on real rock surrounded by my friends? Sure. Is that practical? Not usually. In fact, rarely. In the DC area, if you want to get on the sharp end, you have to drive a good while. The gym is fun, often times it's relaxing (at least compared to sitting in a cubicle all day), and you get to see friends. I don't understand all the bashing it takes from "real" climbers.

Finding new ways to train. Taking massive whippers. Having a good time. Coordinating trips outside. It is always a good time, and I do feel bad for the people who think the only way to have a good time is to get outside.

Plus, you never know who you might find at the gym. There once was this gym rat n00b...and before she knew it, she was using her first cam (and was still a n00b)! Just saying... ls

Well at the gym I attend. I can tell you the worst part is "spandex mondays", its like dude soup in there. I mean, come on nobody cares to see your aqua day-glow 80's thrift shop spandex and junk in all balled up. Although, for the two hot ladies that show up, that may be the best too.

The scenery can be quite pleasant. Working on technique. Meeting people to later climb outdoors with. Climbing in the winter. (Yes, we get real winter here, and gym climbing feels more like rock climbing to me than ice climbing does.)

The approach is easy and all bathrooms have T.P. It When its raining everything seems to stay dry. Some friends that call you names and pull you of the wall. and Victory whippers. Oh yea the decking on the pads at 25 ft isnt so bad either.
