So despite all Tiger Wood's issues, he was named athlete of the decade by the AP.

If there was such a thing, who would be the climber of the decade? We don't want to degrade this discussion into the inevitable bouldering vs sport vs trad vs alpine, so please choose one for each of the category:

bouldering and sport climbing

trad climbing

alpine/mountaineering

Who is the climber(s) of the decade?

Oliver Moon, he's gotta be in his fifties and finished most of the free routes on el cap. Pretty gnarly.

I nominate me.

I started this decade, falling off of 5.5's, and ended doing 5.10's.

I developed the strength and stamina to scramble elevations over a kilometer, and spent lots of nights under the stars on remote ridges.

I took advantage of dirtbag status to explore several un-named mountains, ridges, and valleys. All four seasons, too. Although dirtbag status means I'm limited on gear and car, I still manage to participate safely in scrambles, mountaineering, and now ice climbing.

As for scandal: I'm sorry, but a gentleman cannot kiss and tell.

bouldering and sport climbing :Chris Sharma, self explanatory in my opinion

trad climbing :Alex Honold, this dude is absolutely amazing is the next level of climbing

alpine/mountaineering :Ed Veisturs, 1st american to climb the world's 8,000meter peaks and did 5 of them this past decade

Who is the climber(s) of the decade?

Sports : I'd go for Chris Sharma, or maybe Adam Ondra, .. although Adam might be a better choice for the climber of the next decennium, maybe.

Trad : Nicolas Favresse : Ah, well, .. this might be blind chauvinism, but this Belgian dude has done some awesome trad expeditions in some of the most moderate parts of the world (Baffin Island, Patagonia, ...), opened challenging routes all over the world (even one on El Cap - The Secret Passage), and together with his climbing mate Sean Villanueva O'Driscoll, they probably make the most sympathetic team of the past decennium, too.

Sport: I don't care if you love him or hate him, Chris Sharma wins this one. Yeah yeah, lots of people pushing the limits hard, but first 15a and 15b as well as numerous hard lines all over the world? He wins, stop debating.

Trad: Much trickier. I'm inclined to say Tommy Caldwell but Nicolas Favresse would give him a run for his money.

Alpine: No idea. Too many teams out there and I don't know enough about it to make a valid choice.

Dunno. Don't read the rags.

There are few climbers that I look up to:

If I had to pick one, Tommy Caldwell: pushing trad limits with good style.

Not "of the decade", but my all time heroes:

Bradford Washburn: I can only hope to live that long and accomplish a fraction as much......in my climbing career and personal life.

Ricardo Cassin: For establishing the Cassin ridge, which is my ultimate goal, I can't imagine climbing up into the unknown with the gear they had back then.....

I say Paul Preuss, John Bachar, or Henry Barber. Oh, you mean THIS decade?

In the TRAD category, I'd say:

If it's no Scottish it's crap: Dave McLeod -- super-hard and super-nice.

Nah - Banff/Lake Louise/Jasper, Bugaboos, Squamish, Potrero in the other direction - they are all just extensions of the US. At least as far as climbing is concerened. That ought to elicit some outcry... I will say you Canucks do have some candidates for this climber of the decade business though. But the winners won't be from the western hemisphere.

I think that "open division" is for mountain sports where you don't actually leave the ground -- like picnics, or motor tours.

Its been a long decade and it seems a lot of the people mentioned so far have been mostly active in recent years. My short list:

Yuji Hirayama for almost onsiteing el cap, onsiteing 14b, sending cobra crack and establishing the nose speed record, sending cobra crack.

Euli Steck for running up and down big mountains in record time and nearly onsiteing el cap as an after thought.

Dave Macleod for climbing at an elite level in pretty much every discipline short of really big routes.

I'm not sure why Copp/Dash were nominated, other than because of the tragedy. What were their FAs?

I would personally vote for Josh Wharton in the Alpine realm.

And second Sharma, Caldwell, and Graham. Love 'em or hate 'em, they were probably the most influencial in the 2000s for sport, trad, and bouldering.
