Actually, I'd be more worried about the guy climbing with a loaded gun. I'd rather have a "sparked doobie" aimed at me any day... Would you shoot your belayer if he made you miss a clip? A.W.

Wow. I certainly don't advocate climbing under the influence, but why the hostile and adversarial tone? Did someone steal your stash? Had a bad experience lately that you need to talk about? Snockered climbers certainly can be a hazard, but my guess is, with that attitude you're far more of a threat to my safety. Relax there, Yosemite Sam. Ed

I'm still trying to figure out what the threat to your personal safety is. 'Maturity' is not found under "U" in the dictionary.

I surely hope that the mediators of this forum don't let this adolescent bible thumping red neck from Tex-ass threaten fellow climbers much longer. Yo J, I wouldn't worry about the stoners in the Valley- they all climb much harder than you could pray to!

Wow... do you have NO understanding of valley history??? Ever hear of Magic Mushroom? Something I'm guessing you'll never ever grow the balls to climb?? Anyways, this deffinitly calls for a story: So two summers ago my 2 weeks in the valley turned into like a month and a half (shoulda been longer but... needless ex-gf stuff). I can't climb every day. The strain starts to get to me and hell, i get bored/lazy. So a lot of rest days I'ld wake up late (but early enough to avoid the man) do the communal breakfast things w/ the other dirt bags and some time around 11-12 cruise down to the lodge store to pick up some king cobra. Ah yes, king cobra, at 75 cents a malt liquor tall boy the cheapest beer in da valley. So, a couple beers later, a little slakin, a dip in the river, chill in the hammok, listen to dylan, genarally just bask in the pure uttter immeasuralbe bliss of camp 4 bummin, some tokes from humbolt tom, I'ld start getting the urge to climb, usally aroudn dinner. So one of these nights I'ld figure I'ld cruise on over to after 6. I did the first pitch the first night I was in the park and got a little weirded by the glacial polish, but figured, $#!&, I've been hear up couple weeks, I'll solo the bitch. Cruise on over to manure, nod at the mexicans grilling out (wishing I had some of what they were eating) and wander on towards the rock wearing my sandals w/ my shoes clipped to my chalk bag. Do the shoe switch, and blast 400 feet of rock in like 10 minutes. THE best damn climb of my life. Period. Don't worry, I fully planning on enjoying another climb more, but up to this point thats the best thing I've done. I'ld describe it more but I can 't really remmber the experience. Partially due to the buzz, but I think mostly due to the fact that free soloing is just that different of a head space. Anywyas, wild climb, run into leo harding on top who just soloed nutcracker (on my list now...) and bust on down. Take a look at After 7 and figure that if after six is a 5.7, well then, after seven should be a well, 5.7 (I'm kinda buzzin at this point, go figure). Anywyas, get up on after seven, decide 5.8 is a little harder than I want to free solo, decide I don't really have a choice, and keep crusing to the top. Quite a bit mroe intense than I ment but what the hell, hit camp, drink more beer, burn a bit and have dinner. A couple weeks later I was in the same situation in camp and decide to head over to swan slab. I'ld soloed aided a 5.11 as practice a couple days before and rember some easy stuff being over there. So i wander around, find some climb with a tree near its base and head up, totatlly onsite. Well, (I'm WAY trashed) about half way up the daylight runs out, I'm getting screwed, and I distintively remember having my feet blow off (moss?) and have to mantle feet free. Once or twice I thought VERY strongly "I'm %@#$ed" "This was a DEEP hole ot get into", but at the same time, I had this weird feeling that someone was looking over me. Alomst like the ghost/spirit of harding or robbins (yeah, I know they were alive, but that was still the impression. I guess they were the only valley climbers I was aware of then so I natrually pictured them). Regardless, I had this strong impression of someone over seeing me and protecting me while I soloed this climb of questionable difficuly in the dark. This is deffinetly the only time I have ever experienced this feeling and it really hit me pretty hard. The next few days I kept describing it to everyone i could find and no one could really relate. Mabey I had somesort of guardian spirit around. Fortunetly I'm drunk enough that the my situation doesn't freak me out too much (??) and I get to the top and find some 3rd class descent by holding my keychain light between my teeth. One of my friends later told me that I passed out 20 minutes after getting back to camp. So I guess I'm saying keep an open mind? Things other and yourself will do will really suprise you. And the valley is a trully truly magical place. Mike Edit: oh yeah, I forgot. The next day I went to find the route I soloed. I couldn't find anything a swan that looked easy enough for me to solo. Weird. [ This Message was edited by: bigwallgumbie on 2002-12-26 21:46 ]

Well, first of all, I believe jbtjc is quite allergic to the smoke in question. I may be wrong, but I think that is what was said in another forum.. So, I understand his strong feelings, however, the method by which he's warning us is overly severe, to say the least. As for bigwallgumbie (emphasis on gumbie), just because you soloed two of the most oft rope free climbs in the valley, trashed on the two most oft used substances, you really aren't saying much. In fact, you are strongly showing your gumbie style (or lack thereof). So, in conclusion, if you'd actually done a little climbing in the park, perhaps you would have a better story to tell. small wall

Smallwall, no need to attack anyone else here... While not smart, and definitely something I wouldn't recommend, bigwall still has an interesting story to tell, and that's what it's all about anyway. Climbing is about the experience, and you save that experience by retelling it every chance you get. Nothing wrong with that. A.W.

Hey Bigwall, I'm not to sure if you should be telling that over the net where some new guy reads it and thinks it would be cool to get loaded and free solo his hardest route ever. I'm not telling you not to do what you do or even trying to rip into you. I just think in a place like this we should not glorify actions like this. I'm not saying I'm gonna shoot you either I just don't want to see anyone hurt. Go ahead and say what you want about me, just think about the influence you can have on someone and the impact it could have on thier live (death). So no hard feelings I'll buy you a real beer sometimes (GUINNESS, it's not just a beer it's a meal) Cheers mate and be safe. -Zac

This post has really hit a nerve with me People who use guns to shoot or threaten people are spineless F#%$wits! Sure if someone rubs you the wrong way go and have words or even a bit of a barney but to actually threaten someone with a gun..... Come on guys you live in a country with an international reputation for high school massacres and street shootings, this post does little to dispel that reputation. Did you really think before posting that or did you just think it would impress your mates??

What is up with this guy? First he threatens to shoot fellow climbers because of an imaginary threat to himself and then has the nerve to end his crazy ranting with "Happy Climbing". Do those in the armed forces consider themselves to be above the law?, he may be from Texas and I'm sure we can make allowances for that but this isn't a John Wayne western and you just can't go around shooting anything that moves. Perhaps this idiot just likes to threaten to shoot people in order to feel better about himself, if that's the case get a shrink real quick and leave climbing to those of us who still have their marbles. Durus - As to your question of whether or not his statement was illegal, it depends on who comes across it. If it was verbal, you could have him arrested for "Terroristic Threatening." Since it's not, though, we'll all just laugh at him and I'll spend the next 6 months trying to convince everyone that just because I say "y'all," it doesn't make me another Southern Redneck... jbtjc, Get over it man. ALSO, If anyone is in the valley and you see this idiot while you are burning down a big one, make sure to point out to the nearest ranger that there is a 19 year old with a handgun in the valley. I think that he will be the one that will be feeling the heavy hand of the law. Legal age to carry a concealed weapon in CA or TX is 21. Just another stupid troll kid with a computer. Plus, .45s are for sissies. real men carry a raging bull. BWG, pound one for me next time. stewart [ This Message was edited by: stewbabby on 2002-12-27 07:05 ]

Just have the experience. Their is enough danger in the sport, no need to add to it. Just have fun and keep safe, no matter how you climb.
