Wow, it's July already... June was a busy month, the 2nd Annual MN Gathering was a success and a great time but the year is half over and we've got a new month ahead of us. Make plans here... rockhugger has asked if anyone is climbing at Barns Bluff this coming Friday July 4th. Personally, I'm not because I have my kids that day/evening and we'll probably be at The Taste of MN and stay for the fireworks after... Maybe Saturday Jeff. Otherwise we'll give it a try next week again... duskerhu

I think the holiday weekend will be bad for a lot of people off doing family stuff and the like. If anyone is going out the following weekend on the 12th or 13th I bet my friends and I would be game. We just made one of our few adventures out of the gym down to Barns Bluff last weekend and we're psyched for some more rock.

If someone could help me out with a ride I could go climbing almost every weekend this summer. I can meet up with you in a convenient location for you. Keep me posted on when people want to get out. Having a "cherry popped" is possibly one of the most horrible euphemisms I have ever heard. ack. Jake and I may be down at Red Wing this weekend, depending on how things develop. Jake- We definitely need to get the site at Frontenac again. The RV park sucked balls compared to it.

18th of July,Carlton peak in Tofte.Camp up by the climbing area or stay at the Blue fin bay,Patrick you should go since I still owe you a night up there.Hardly anyone climbs up at Carlton peak so it's not going to be crowded. We can climb up at section 13 and the mystical mountain zone too.

Ive only climbed at Barns Bluff a few times. Decided to brave the heat, bugs, and possible crowd. Fortunately the weather was GORGEOUS....the bugs didnt start peckin until mid afternoon...and there were very few folks around climbing. Those who were climbing were very pleasant to chat with and be around. Unfortunately we did have a bit of an alpine experience as rocks started getting thrown from above....and then the fireworks from atop the hill. After being hit a few times on my noggin with ice and rock in the past, I get a tad nervous in these situations, so we headed home (it was getting late anyway). Im a little backwards in my learning...I started on ice, then rock. I started leading trad...and just today did my first couple sport leads. The concept of it being 'okay' to fall is a hard one to swallow. Strange to see some people take whippers and not have it phase them. Despite the rockfall, it was a perfect day out there!

btw...question... The crack between cardiac standstill and rock -a-holics ...is that freebase? Seems to be far from the grade they give it in the book (5.9-...I would say its more of a 5.7). Anyone else think so? Anyone ever do this climb with pro? Seems like it might be a little sketchy...but doable.

Thanks for the info. I never saw that post. If you dont mind, since Ive obviously caused somewhat of a thread drift here, I will wrap it up and then if someone wants to move this post over to the original accident post, that would be great. I dont do well with remembering moves and sequences from one climb to the next. What I DO remember is that it was a fun climb. It looked a little more chossy than a lot of the stuff around there. I tested a lot of pieces, which all SEEMED okay...or at least better than I had expectd. Nothing was obviously loose and ready to fall at a touch, except for a few small chockstones inside the crack. I was careful to pull down rather than out when using a hold. However I chose to use the crack pretty much the entire way (layback and jams). I could see how an actual fall, depending on the factor, could dislodge large pieces on this particular climb, along with many others at redwing. I climbed the route before my partner. In all honesty, I was more nervous from the kids throwing down softball size rocks than I was having him knock something down on me. Im sorry such a scary experience was had on this climb (or any for that matter). Sounds like you have a positive attitude and are open to learning. Its taken me a while to bounce back from my accident a few years ago. I still get the heebie jeebies in certain situations. But thats normal. I guess if we could prevent or predict all the dangerous situations which can occur while climbign, a majority of us wouldnt climb. Always trust your gut Stay safe! thanks again for the info -twiz

You dudes who didn't climb this weekend missed a great day at the Bluffs. Bert and I were there Sunday, and there was NO ONE. As in, we were at Generic Wall/Annadonia and had NO other parties in eye or ear range. Not one. I guess the threat of rain (which never materialized) kept everyone away. A little muggy and buggy, but otherwise pleasant. Also good was our climbing of Left Lane (10a outside for me! 8) ) and Looking for Lust. Bert had a fab day on Annadonia, an 11b! We were in good form. Dann- you'll also be happy to know I have now successfully led _all_ of Sunburst. No skipping clipping the anchors. On a sadder note, Bert is moving to Boston on Wednesday, which means I am out of a climbing partner! I think I'll keep up Mondays and Wednesdays at VE, since lots of folks I know seem to go those days. I'm always ready to pair up with anyone who doesn't mind my slow and overcautious leading and the fact I own no gear. later, Paula.

Hey Everone, I'm back from my Tower Trip. The good news is that I got my gear back (thanks phattire) and got to climb 2 days at the tower and one day at Mt. Rushmore without a problem. The bad news is that, okay don't laugh too hard, on the way home I stopped at Wall Drug, popped a quarter into this mechanical bull to squeeze the horns and test my strength, and managed to pop my shoulder out. Yes, for real and yes I'm an idiot. So it looks like I could be out for a couple weeks.

pj, happy to hear you two had a good time at the Bluff! I would've gone down there this weekend but I had my girls and we had lots of 4th of July plans to carry out (and climbing was not included  ). I think you found no other climbers at the Bluff because of the holiday weekend; everyone goes out of town which is why I no longer go traveling around on that weekend. Too bad we're losing Bert to the Boston area. He seems like a nice guy. Tell him to come back and visit us any time he has the chance! Sung! Well, at least you were on your way home before the fated accident... Glad you guys had a good time on the tower and at Rushmore. Isn't it funny (in an ironic sort of way) when you climb all this tough rock and potentially endanger your life on a regular basis with climbing and rarely get hurt and then a little mocho-ism and a quarter in a slot will put you on the sidelines for a few weeks... :? Sorry to hear! Heal quick! duskerhu

Hey Josh, I'm pretty sure I'll be at VE tonight... Probably around 6:30 or 7. And even if I don't make it, kurt and the gang should all be there. Also, for anyone interested, fo_d and I will be at Barn Bluff Friday morning about 0700... And kurt and gang and I will be at Taylors Falls Saturday. Unsure what time yet; maybe kurt can decide on the time since I'm sure I'd call a time much too early for him...  duskerhu

hey y'all, i think you should try july climbing in wisconsin. :D we'll be at devil's lake the weekend of july 25-27, if anyone's interested in making the trip down. cole and i just got back from a week at red river gorge - did my first sport leads and two pitch trad. we're heading back at the end of the month, and then onto west virginia. 8) and if i thought the park ranger at blue mounds was bad, i wasn't ready for the road blocks/dog searches/undercover cops in the red. that was crazy. otherwise, if you can't make wisconsin in july, come down for the august/september midwest gatherings in the works, alright? jen

The strip? tourist rock? keyhole?Sentinal? or is there an easy way to pick you guys out? Sorry twiz, my bad... At the moment, we've no particular plans (that I know of) to climb a particular section... kurt actually set this up and he hasn't posted this week. He emailed me that he had been telling everyone to meet in the parking lot at 10am so, that's what I got. I'm assuming (although, hopefully inncorrectly) that by 10am we'll be waiting in line for anything near the parking lot on the MN side. I was actually hoping for the WI side. I'll contact kurt tonight and see if he has a more specific plan and post up what I find out. In the mean time, you can recognize us by... kurt is relatively short and has a negative "ape index"   , has black hair with a bit of gray working its way through and usually wears a pair of Prana pants and a t-shirt. He also has a dozen black Petzl Spirit draws near him at all times... I on the other hand am a bit taller than kurt and have a +2 "ape index" (which doesn't always help me climb better than kurt by the way :? ) and I have longish hair (blonde/light brown) and am very balding on top. I carry an over-stuffed red Lowe Alpine Vision 40 backpack and you will usually find a foldable blue "belay chair" very near by if I'm not actually climbing. I don't know for sure who else will be there but look for a largish group of maybe 6 or 8 people taking up a good section of wall... duskerhu

(Before the peanut gallery arrives ) Actually it might be better if there is some pressure not to sketch on 5.easy, :) I already asked Dan if he was interested but I'll open it up to anyone who wants to get there early. I was thinking around 7am, maybe thats pushin it but 8 at the latest. Matt

Yep Matt, check yer PM's... Ah, for anyone interested, here's the scoop for Saturday at TF... Looks like at least Matt and I are going a little early. Kurt, Patrick, and Lee are planning on being there at 9am to hook up in the parking lot. Kurt invited a few folks from VE out and he originally told them 10am in the lot. I'm not sure if he's updated those folks on the new time or not. So it looks like Matt and I'll be there early, Kurt and the gang at 9am, then some folks at 10... Meet in the parking lot at those times to get found... I suppose near the ranger's hut. See yall Saturday, or today if you're coming down to the bluff... duskerhu

Thanks for the more detailed info. I dont know what time I plan on heading out there. I dont know what I will be wearing. I have a granite gear maroon/grey/black pack I have light brown hair. it will be in braids or pulled back in some sort of fashion. If I dont approach you, its because Im not sure...and honestly Im a tad shy in person. Dont hesitate to say anything if you see me dinking around on some rock by myself, setting up anchors/placing gear (can never get enough practice w/that), or just watching others. Oh ya, Im a girl, if ya havent figured that one out yet.

Can't you tell that twiz is just trying to be funny? Yeah, the grade of that climb has probably changed a little. Maybe it's missing a 400 pound rock half way up. I haven't been there yet to see the results, but it would be interesting to know the rating now.

Les and I TRed it Friday (Freebase with less roof than before) and it is definately not easier without the roof to step on once you pull over... Though, I never thought it was truely a 5.9- in the first place. It's probably a solid 5.8. There is the factor now that the roof is definately smaller and that maybe changes the looks of the route psychologically... There is still a large chunk that's loose. When you look at it from the ground, it looks like a good hook right above where the roof formerly resided. This "chunk" is shaped somewhat like a pyramid pointing upward and is lodged pretty well. You can actually use it as a side-pull and won't feel that it is loose that way but if you push up on it's underside from the bottom, you will definately notice that it is dangerously loose. It needs the "hammer treatment" before someone catches it in the noggin. Maybe I'll bring the hammer up there with me this week and take that "chunk" out. duskerhu

Dann, (or anyone else) Friday's no good, but Saturday would work. I may not be in any shape for an early start on Saturday (a friend's bachelor party), but after a shower and a gallon of water I'll be back to form. I could do either Red Wing or Taylor's. Josh

I haven't been to the gym, and may not go Wednesday, but I'm selling Saturday at Red Wing to a few people. Patrick, Les, Dann, Jeff, what do you all think? Time? That's right Dann, I may even show up before 10:30!.....and with a few new jokes, to boot. By the way icehugger, I'll get your harness back to you(as usual). This time without the extra cave mud! That's OK Les... I really didn't want to climb inside today but, maybe I'll just do a "workout" type of deal instead of climbing routes all night. kurt, I'm unsure on Saturday's agenda... I've got my girls this weekend and they are staying at Grandma Kay's on Friday night so, its gonna depend on when she needs me to pick them up Saturday as to if I can climb or not. I may be able to squeeze a couple early hours in if need be. But I'd have to start WAY before 10:30... ...and ALWays looking forward to your jokes and tricks kurt! You never did tell everyone the "Apple Stand" joke Saturday... I can NEVER remember jokes, but this is one I have so you know it must be a good one. Bring a few toothpicks and a couple wine corks Saturday and I'll show up just for that. duskerhu

When you guys make it up to 30 posts, you'll promtly be promoted to Spurt Climber... Ahhh, I remember the days when I was an rc.com Boulderer and then a Spurt Climber... The phase I really had trouble in though was when I was an On-Site Stud(ette). Ahhh, those were the days... 8)
In reply to: If thats a go, what time are ya thinking on Saturday? Well, an 8am start would work I guess. Stop and get yer coffee to go...
In reply to: I still have that carabineer you barrowed me. I am looking to go climbing on Saturday so if you go I can return it to you Thanks Tim; I'd forgoten about that at TF Saturday. I'll definately need that back as an insurance policy on some future climb... Maybe... 8) Anyway, gotta go... duskerhu

Hey Everyone, I'm still alive but this stupid injury is taking a bit longer to recover then I thought. I should be back in 2 more weeks I hope. I'm starting to get crazy from not being able to climb. And I just wanted to throw this idea out there of an October climbing trip to possibly Red Rocks or the Tower for an extended weekend.

OK, as far as Barn Bluff Wednesday, Les and I will probably meet there between 3 and 4pm. I need to be at work by 9:50pm so I'll need to be driving away from the bluff at 8:45pm. And it'll be getting dark soon after that so... Come on down as soon as you can and climb until dark if you want, or until you want. Sung, as for your idea for October, Les and I had kind of tentatively been planning on Red Rocks for our late winter/early spring climbing trip (and that's kinda too far to drive for a "long weekend" kinda deal). For the fall we were talking about maybe Rushmore/Needles area and stopping at Blue Mounds on the way home. Our original time frame for this was mid to late September but that could be changed. I'm unsure about Devils Tower. Kind of wanted to wait on that again for another year but, hmmm. We'll see. Les? You have any comments to through in on this line of thought? duskerhu

I dont have to leave the bluff till 9:30. And as for the tower, i'd like to go but i think i better wait another year (however if we stumble across someone at rushmore that would like to take a day trip and drag us up the tower they wouldnt have to work to hard to convince me :D ) See ya at the Bluff Wed 3:30? While I want to go down to Red Wing tomorrow, it depends on a few things. I just moved into my condo last weekend, and have to clear out the old apartment, as well as clean it up before Thursday. I am going over after work tonight. If I get a lot done, I can probably be down at the Buff by 5:00. I'll post up later tonight with something more definite. I am up for a trip in September or October. I still have four vacation days to burn this year, so just let me know which weekend works the best for everyone. Craig

This is off the subject but back when Dann and I went to J-tree, one day I was playing around with my new camera and I got a picture that I wanted to show everyone but I knew I couldnt get it past the photo editors. So now I have some web space and I can show the pic now  here it is: http://www.intergate.com/~lesvor/lady_bug_booty_call.htm

Look what happens when you take an Indiana Boy on vacation for a couple days. He plays in the dirt and spends an hour taking pictures of a couple Lady Bugs makin' whoopi! Now I know where Matthew gets his bug facination from. YOU old pervert!   I say try and post it here! I bettcha no body says nuttin' and it gets a bunch-a-votes...   (especially if you link it to a thread in the Community Forum  ) That would be the BEST! And BTW, where can I see the rest of the collection? I know you shot about 2/3's of a roll and I even burned a couple on your rig on those two while we were waiting for those stupid coals to get hot so we could cook dinner. What a couple a Minnesotans won't do for entertainment in the high desert when they're hungry  :? 8) duskerhu
