Wow, it's July already... June was a busy month, the 2nd Annual MN Gathering was a success and a great time but the year is half over and we've got a new month ahead of us. Make plans here... rockhugger has asked if anyone is climbing at Barns Bluff this coming Friday July 4th. Personally, I'm not because I have my kids that day/evening and we'll probably be at The Taste of MN and stay for the fireworks after... Maybe Saturday Jeff. Otherwise we'll give it a try next week again... duskerhu

I think the holiday weekend will be bad for a lot of people off doing family stuff and the like. If anyone is going out the following weekend on the 12th or 13th I bet my friends and I would be game. We just made one of our few adventures out of the gym down to Barns Bluff last weekend and we're psyched for some more rock.

If someone could help me out with a ride I could go climbing almost every weekend this summer. I can meet up with you in a convenient location for you. Keep me posted on when people want to get out. Having a "cherry popped" is possibly one of the most horrible euphemisms I have ever heard. ack. Jake and I may be down at Red Wing this weekend, depending on how things develop. Jake- We definitely need to get the site at Frontenac again. The RV park sucked balls compared to it.

18th of July,Carlton peak in Tofte.Camp up by the climbing area or stay at the Blue fin bay,Patrick you should go since I still owe you a night up there.Hardly anyone climbs up at Carlton peak so it's not going to be crowded. We can climb up at section 13 and the mystical mountain zone too.

Ive only climbed at Barns Bluff a few times. Decided to brave the heat, bugs, and possible crowd. Fortunately the weather was GORGEOUS....the bugs didnt start peckin until mid afternoon...and there were very few folks around climbing. Those who were climbing were very pleasant to chat with and be around. Unfortunately we did have a bit of an alpine experience as rocks started getting thrown from above....and then the fireworks from atop the hill. After being hit a few times on my noggin with ice and rock in the past, I get a tad nervous in these situations, so we headed home (it was getting late anyway). Im a little backwards in my learning...I started on ice, then rock. I started leading trad...and just today did my first couple sport leads. The concept of it being 'okay' to fall is a hard one to swallow. Strange to see some people take whippers and not have it phase them. Despite the rockfall, it was a perfect day out there!

btw...question... The crack between cardiac standstill and rock -a-holics ...is that freebase? Seems to be far from the grade they give it in the book (5.9-...I would say its more of a 5.7). Anyone else think so? Anyone ever do this climb with pro? Seems like it might be a little sketchy...but doable.

Thanks for the info. I never saw that post. If you dont mind, since Ive obviously caused somewhat of a thread drift here, I will wrap it up and then if someone wants to move this post over to the original accident post, that would be great. I dont do well with remembering moves and sequences from one climb to the next. What I DO remember is that it was a fun climb. It looked a little more chossy than a lot of the stuff around there. I tested a lot of pieces, which all SEEMED okay...or at least better than I had expectd. Nothing was obviously loose and ready to fall at a touch, except for a few small chockstones inside the crack. I was careful to pull down rather than out when using a hold. However I chose to use the crack pretty much the entire way (layback and jams). I could see how an actual fall, depending on the factor, could dislodge large pieces on this particular climb, along with many others at redwing. I climbed the route before my partner. In all honesty, I was more nervous from the kids throwing down softball size rocks than I was having him knock something down on me. Im sorry such a scary experience was had on this climb (or any for that matter). Sounds like you have a positive attitude and are open to learning. Its taken me a while to bounce back from my accident a few years ago. I still get the heebie jeebies in certain situations. But thats normal. I guess if we could prevent or predict all the dangerous situations which can occur while climbign, a majority of us wouldnt climb. Always trust your gut Stay safe! thanks again for the info -twiz

You dudes who didn't climb this weekend missed a great day at the Bluffs. Bert and I were there Sunday, and there was NO ONE. As in, we were at Generic Wall/Annadonia and had NO other parties in eye or ear range. Not one. I guess the threat of rain (which never materialized) kept everyone away. A little muggy and buggy, but otherwise pleasant. Also good was our climbing of Left Lane (10a outside for me! 8) ) and Looking for Lust. Bert had a fab day on Annadonia, an 11b! We were in good form. Dann- you'll also be happy to know I have now successfully led _all_ of Sunburst. No skipping clipping the anchors. On a sadder note, Bert is moving to Boston on Wednesday, which means I am out of a climbing partner! I think I'll keep up Mondays and Wednesdays at VE, since lots of folks I know seem to go those days. I'm always ready to pair up with anyone who doesn't mind my slow and overcautious leading and the fact I own no gear. later, Paula.

Hey Everone, I'm back from my Tower Trip. The good news is that I got my gear back (thanks phattire) and got to climb 2 days at the tower and one day at Mt. Rushmore without a problem. The bad news is that, okay don't laugh too hard, on the way home I stopped at Wall Drug, popped a quarter into this mechanical bull to squeeze the horns and test my strength, and managed to pop my shoulder out. Yes, for real and yes I'm an idiot. So it looks like I could be out for a couple weeks.

pj, happy to hear you two had a good time at the Bluff! I would've gone down there this weekend but I had my girls and we had lots of 4th of July plans to carry out (and climbing was not included  ). I think you found no other climbers at the Bluff because of the holiday weekend; everyone goes out of town which is why I no longer go traveling around on that weekend. Too bad we're losing Bert to the Boston area. He seems like a nice guy. Tell him to come back and visit us any time he has the chance! Sung! Well, at least you were on your way home before the fated accident... Glad you guys had a good time on the tower and at Rushmore. Isn't it funny (in an ironic sort of way) when you climb all this tough rock and potentially endanger your life on a regular basis with climbing and rarely get hurt and then a little mocho-ism and a quarter in a slot will put you on the sidelines for a few weeks... :? Sorry to hear! Heal quick! duskerhu

Sung-- That would be really funny.....if you weren't laid up for a while. Good luck with the healing! Is anyone going to be at VE tonight, say 6:30 or so? I have an unexpectedly free night. Josh

Hey Josh, I'm pretty sure I'll be at VE tonight... Probably around 6:30 or 7. And even if I don't make it, kurt and the gang should all be there. Also, for anyone interested, fo_d and I will be at Barn Bluff Friday morning about 0700... And kurt and gang and I will be at Taylors Falls Saturday. Unsure what time yet; maybe kurt can decide on the time since I'm sure I'd call a time much too early for him...  duskerhu

hey y'all, i think you should try july climbing in wisconsin. :D we'll be at devil's lake the weekend of july 25-27, if anyone's interested in making the trip down. cole and i just got back from a week at red river gorge - did my first sport leads and two pitch trad. we're heading back at the end of the month, and then onto west virginia. 8) and if i thought the park ranger at blue mounds was bad, i wasn't ready for the road blocks/dog searches/undercover cops in the red. that was crazy. otherwise, if you can't make wisconsin in july, come down for the august/september midwest gatherings in the works, alright? jen
