i called my airline that i am flying with tomorrow. here's the conversation. Me: uh high, i hear you have some allowances for overweight luggage if the items are sporting goods. Airline Rep: Well that depends. What are you bringing? Me: Climbing equipment, like a rope and other climbing gear. AR: Is it flammable? Make-up your own dumb answers!

Last time I traveled via air, I filled one of those giant gear bags with all my climbing stuff. It must have weighed 70 lbs, so I just casually lay it down for the ticket agent (woman, maybe 100 lbs) to pick up and put on the belt. When she tried to lift it, and failed, she asked what was in it? I said "climbing gear", she asks "Oh, you take your window cleaning stuff with you?" I said "Yeah, the hardest part is folding the scaffold and getting it in the bag!"

My favorite was when I was doing the "Tour De Platte". Just finished the first dome and this group of mullets were hiking up to the summit just as we were getting there. The lone girl in the group asked how we got up. "Did you guys just throw your ropes up until it caught something then pulled yourselves up?" Yep, that's exactly how it's done.

There's a little cliff in a park that I used to go for some quick climbing. There's a camping ground and RV Park there as well, so lots of tourists and little kids who think they are cool. I'm leading a hard route (5.10a) and these kids walk up the trail to the top of the cliff, looking down, watching as I climb. I don't mind people watching me climb, but they were right over top me. After watching me for a bit, they walk down to the base near my belayer and one of them says "I could run up that!". Once I got to the top, I said, "run up it, eh? Show me!" and they just kinda shugged it off and moved on. That's happened twice. Kids saying its easy and that can run up it. Also... at the same place... "You know there's a trail around back" -- im like, urggg.... Andrew

I work as a birthday party belayer at the local gym. Here are some funny things kids say about their first time climbing expirence: (We tighen their harnesses) I feel like a sumo wrestler! It feels like a diaper. Do we really have to wear this? Some kid came up to me once and asked "can you tighten my furnace? see, it's loose" I had to politely explain to him amongst my laughter that it is actually called a harness. One kid encouraged his friend who required help on the wall saying "use that brick over there!" Kids always think that the bouldering cave is the kiddie wall. One kid tried to use the rope in one hand and a hold in the other to climb the wall. Kids always make me laugh! Some of these aren't so funny, but its cool to see the misconceptions people have about climbing.

I train in the gym in the winter and I constantly get the same line: "Isn't climbing boring? I mean I can make it up all the walls or are you still workin' on that really tall one?"

I'm originally from India but am living in Tucson. I find it irritating when people assume that I've climbed/been to/ want to climb the Everest. I haven't even been close to that place and alpine stuff scares the crap out of me. Another favourite that non-climbing people like to point out - "There are many ways to the top of the mountain. But once there the view is the same."

Hellbent, I don't think because you're Indian people say that . . . I get the Everest question all the time, and I'm just your run of the mill bespeckled Irish gal.

I helped run the portable wall at the last air show and we had 95% kids climb. some of them would grab the rope with both hands and try to climb with their feet, or think we were going to pull them up! Kids amaze me, the ones that think they're the toughest can't even make it up half way, then I belayed a 3 year old deaf girl and she went all the way up!! Oh, then the dumb ass parents calling their kid scardie cat and wimps..I was ready to smack 'em up side the head!! I even told them I'd like to see them try it...non of them had the guts enough to do it.

Describing bouldering to non-climbers...they just don't seem to get it. "It's so low, how is it any fun? You're not going up anywhere" or from parents who bring there kids into a gym "first work on getting up that wall (bouldering cave(!)) then I'll let you go on the big walls" wha-??

The parents can be frickin' ridiculuous at times. One time we had a parent screaming at her 3 yr. old son to get to the top of a 40' wall, telling him that he couldn't come down when he wanted to. Was she belaying? No. I cut in and simply let the poor guy down. Urg.. frickin stupid.
