Imagine my shock when I opened my Xmas present from one of my partners and it was an Alien...that was grey/silver colored on the handle and the size was just in between the red and yellow Alien. I looked at him like "is this what I think it is??" and he said "yep, a new size Alien!"
I lept up and gave him a hug with more joy than if he'd given me the keys to a new car! Where the hell he found it I have no idea, a climbing shop in Vegas I think. But it's this perfect new size, right in between yellow and red.
Ahh...I love you new gray Alien. 8) 8) 8)
Anyone else have one? I'd never even seen one before, didn't know they started making them.

huh, i know Desert Rock just got a new shipment of Aliens in (like a week or two ago), but i didnt notice any new sizes...course, that's prolly because i've been ogling the HB offsets lately....

I searched the web and could not find anything about a grey alien. Can you post a picture for us? Also I remember seeing a web site for CCH Aliens, but I was unable to turn anything up this evening. The offsets have grey slings, but color coded loops. I guess you are the lucky one.
Seems that a size between the yellow and red is not really necessary, huh guess they thought it was.

Dudes, as a cost-saving measure I just spraypainted my red alien grey. Yay! I love my grey alien!

hell, you can see it right now if ya want, my Aliens are at the bottom of Bob's pack since he led the last route yesterday so it's there in Vegas. But don't worry, they'll be back in my possession Friday and I WILL have it on me this weekend. Never gonna loan a guy my Aliens again after what happened last time I did that. At least I know this time I'll get them back. :wink:
Oh, and I did an online search too, they're new and all I could find online were the standard colors, none of the new stuff yet and since CCH doens't have a homepage that didn't really help anyway.

i actually did find a website that was selling the #5 alien (the #4 had a pic of Yellow, the #6 was Red)...so, perhaps that was it. course, it was an aussie site.

I looked at the site and the pic you saw was the Orange not the red. Size 4 is yellow, size 5 is red and size six is orange. Sorry for the bad news. That would be great to have a new size but I can't see it concidering CCH can't fill the orders of the other sizes. But if there is a new size I want one too.

The red/yellow hybrid has a grey sling, but the trigger loop is half red and half yellow. All of the hybrids have grey slings. The alien that I have that has both a grey sling and a grey trigger is the largest one...somewhere between the size of a #1 and #2 camalot.
Beth, is your new alien a red/yellow hybrid or is it a new "even" size btw yellow and red.

A new size is cool, but they need to work on their color scheme. I have a grey alien that's about the size of a #2 camalot. All of the hybrids have grey sling too.

hey, speaking of out of stock, just to piss y'all off, I just scored a full set of aliens (blue through red, the only sizes I care about) for $100 on eBay. I had to re-tie some of the slings, and they look like hell, but they work.

hail eBay. Praise eBay. I'm going to be selling a bunch of old rigid Friends and TCU's on eBay soon, take a gander if you want. Plus, now that I have doubles in the sizes I give a crap about, I won't be auto-searching for Aliens anymore.

I think those are the "white" ones, which are actually like a translucent whitish-grey color. This one is solid grey/silver in color and it's way smaller than "white" alien. It's perfectly sized btwn red & yellow.
Okay, I'm bringing this Alien out for a big show and tell this weekend so everyone believes me :wink:.

I agree with Radistrad here. The yellow Alien is 3/4" and the red Alien is 1". I really don't think there's much necessity for what I presume to be a 7/8" size. Come on - we're talking about a mere 1/8". I've never had a placement where neither yellow nor red fit and felt I needed something in between.
And for all of you who feel you must "run out and get one now" I think maybe, just maybe, you folks are just a bit TOO preoccupied with your gear. It's called Climbing folks, not Gear Collecting (although some of you make me wonder).
This should be moved from "Injuries and Accidents" to "Gearheads" for sure!

yup, there is a brand new grey alien. i was going to post this a couple weeks ago but decided not to. according to rumor, it was personally requested by Rich Gottleib himself and the guys at CCH made it especially for him.
now a lot of you may think that there is no need for an intermediate between red and yellow( i was among those at first) there is actually a pretty good size chunk that is taken up by the new size... gunkiemike broke out his calipers and actually measured the usable ranges, its on gunks.com.
i fondeled one of this new cams last monday and as of then Rock and Snow had at least half a dozen after their initial stock sold out pretty much right away

The presence of this new greay alien could breed even MORE new aliens!!!
Will there be a Yellow-grey hybred? How about a red-grey hybred?
CCH may have found a wormhole in the universe that somehow creates infinate opportunity for new alien combinations!
So if the current yellow-red hybred now "skips" the grey, could we have a black-green hybred! Oh my.

Yeah, but Rick, I now have TWO full sets of Hybrid Aliens. :wink:
I don't get the need for this new Alien. Of course, that doesn't stop me from coveting it, but to me the real need is for a size between the red and the ORANGE. Not the yellow/red. I'll have to see one for myself, I guess... :roll:

Well, this baby arrived last Friday. I didn't have the chance to place it anywhere this weekend, but I did compare sizes of the yellow, gray, and red. My initial observation, as Wes mentioned, is that the range it covers is not very different from the red. The over lap with the Red Alien is signifiant and I think the need for this one is largely frivilous. It will probably be a niche piece for my rack when aiding, but I don't think I'll be bringing it along for many trad climbs. It's just redundant.
Now, if they start making one between the red and the orange, I think they'd be on to something. There's clearly a need for one between those two.

Not if you are talking "useable range" find a 1.1" crack and your red will be about 60% open :( ,and your orange will be almost fully closed (90%) :? . I agree with the mysterious grey being "superfluous" but I'd like a red/orange (sunset) cross. This is actually a pretty awkward size for camalots as well. Red TCU probably works best.

That's why there is a purple camalot.
Nuts,
Hexes,
Tri Cams,
Red Alien < Purple Camalot < Orange Alien < Green Camalot
Plus many TCU sizes in between.
ALSO 90 % retraction is perfect for aliens. So in the above scenario depicted, the orange is a cherry-bomb piece!

I have extensively used the red and the yellow alien. It is quite true that I'd give my left testicle or shoot my mother in the head before heading up a route without them.
I have played around with the grey, and was totally unimpressed. I mean, this thing doesn't do anything that a red or yellow wont. You may find the occasional crack that is the magical size in between (I'm thinking of the easier part of Bishops Crack), but it's 99% redundant. I'll probably never get one unless one of my hookups throws one at me.
For the record, I'm 89% drunk right now though. I could still outclimb your silly ass without any grey alien.

If you climb in an area that eats up small cams then the grey alien is a fantastic way to supplement your rack instead of doubling up on the yellow or the red... But take my advice for what its worth, I'm only 17% drunk right now (its early, give me a break!)
I know that regular aliens come in regular and super long... does anyone know if they also make hybrids in SL?

I'm sorry, I didn't realize I posted twice. Dealing with CCH is such a hassle, babies crying in the background when you call to find out why your shippment is 3 months late, etc.. I post if I ever have something from CCH in stock because chances are nobody else does. If it wasn't for their superior products they would be out of business. Many retailers chose not to carry their products because their relationship with their dealers is terrible, they say one thing and do another, etc... Because fewer people carry & stock their stuff it drives up the demand, that is why some hybrids can be found on ebay above retail. When the hybrids come in I will post that they are in stock on a hybrid thread because it's big wall season and good luck getting them elsewhere!
