Hey all, Ivan and I will be moving to the Dolores area at the start of the year. Anyone from SW CO know of any good climbing around that area (or within a few hours drive)? The lack of a gym close by will be a shock to the system, so we are going to build a wall in the RVport, but would like to find some bouldering in the area for after work and some climbing areas for the weekend. Any ideas (I hope :()?

The San Juans, while being the most beatuiful mountains in CO, are unfortunitely pretty chossy as far as rock climbing goes. That said, Telluride/Ophir have some good routes and you are not too far from Naturita and Penitente, both nice sport areas. Durango has some crags but I've not heard much about those. And if you climb ice, the San Juans are the place to be. Good luck!

There's a fair amount of climbing in Unaweep Canyon. Highwayt 141 runs through it, one of my favorite drives. Plenty of bouldering, trad, and sport. Be mindful of private property and potential access issues. For more info check out: http://www.climbingboulder.com/rock/db/unaweep_canyon/ d.

Dolores Canyon has some excellent crack routes (just like Indian Creek) and you are not to far away many excellent climbing areas. Will talk to more this weekend and I can give you the names of climbing friends in the area.

Wow....that's a lot of replies really fast ;) As far as why the sam hell we're moving there: Our boss just opend an office in Cortez and Ivan and I have always wanted to live in CO. We though this was the perfect opportunity seeing as how we both have jobs lined up already. We have a few friends in Durango and we went up to take a look at the area a little while ago and it seems perfect for us to start our CO adventures. Plus, both of our families and a group of amazing people (imnotafraid for one) we hang out with on a regular basis would be an ambitious drive away instead of a plane ride. Thanks all for your suggestions. BobD ~ I'll defintely be talking to you about the bouldering in Dolores this weekend! Andrew~ That sounds like a great plan. Amber ~ Denver is a bit far to climb regularly, but very do-able in a weekend. Expect to see more of me, girlie! mgb, dlintz~ Thanks for the great suggestions! I've been doing a lot of searching on the internet and Unaweep hasn't come up. flamer ~ East Animas in Durango is supposed to be a great sport area (for the area) and there are a few new harded areas being developed as we speak. Thanks again all! We're sad to leave AZ (but not Phoenix and the why-are-you-people-going-to-have-to-make-me-kill-you traffic), but we're really stoked to be a part of your happy family :)

We'll miss the frequency that we were able to hang with you guys, but we will not miss you guys! I fully expect you guys to be taking regular trips up to get out of the heat and we'll be down there monthly, I'm sure. Think 11 family members and about 5 super-close friends. That's a whole lotta birthdays!

Amber, that sounds like an awesome idea. Thanks for the invite. We spent many weekends this summer in Durango and it's a really fun town. Cool people, great bars, good music....a lot like Tempe used to be before it got the corporate cancer. We will be about an hour from Telluride and about the same from Purgatory, so the offer is open to you as well (although for any time of the year). We'll have plenty of guest space at the new digs!

Welcome to the area. :) Like Bob D. said, Dolores has some sweet bouldering and Durango has even better stuff, you're about two hours from the excellent and demanding climbing at Ophir, Falls Wall in Telluride offers fun conglomerate sport climbing, East Animas has many superb routes (of which most of the moderate ones are trad and some of which are full 200' foot rope stretchers), Golf Wall is a fun steep pile of limestone choss (it's actually not that bad), and if you look in the database you will find a new area being developed for awesome granite sport climbing. Oh yeah, and we have some of the best mountain biking and backcountry skiing in the country.

I've climbed at Golf Wall and a sandstone crag just north of Durango -- can't remember the name, but it's right behind the hospital. Beautiful place to climb. Plus you have all dem 14er's in your backyard!! Cool. I haven't even met Reno yet, and I know we're getting the short end of the trade. :( :P Why the move? Where are you slackers going to find work?

(j/k) But it certainly helps to already have friends where you're going. Jeff~ I'd love to hear more about the Yellow Jacket stuff. That's really close I think. Ed~ Our boss just opened a new office in Cortez. (About 5 minutes from our new place). Guess who volunteered to go up :) Luckily, the work we do can be done from almost anywhere in the southwest. All of our jobs right now are in CO. and NV. (Ivan has a few clients in AZ, but nothing that ties him there), so there's no reason why we couldn't work from that office. madmax~ Thanks for the welcome! It'll be the beginning of the year until we are up there permanently (when we get our house sold), but will be up there frequently on weekends until then. We'll definitely have to hook up to climb soon. Do you know Jeff Woods (woodse)? Um, and I'm really sorry about the Reno trade. The same thing happened to the Diamonbacks and they never recoevered. Just joshin' Reno! I'm sure you're going to love it there. Everyone will think you're swell as long as you fill in the void that we left: 1. You must organize big gatherings and then fall asleep during key party times and miss all the fun. 2. You must learn to climb tall trees and then fall out of them. 3. You must know and love the hookah (shisha people, relax) and bring it to all gatherings of more than 1 person. 4. For no apparent reason, you must wander around aimlessly through Queen Creek yelling, "Maaaaaaaaaaaarley!!!!!!!" and last but not least, (sigh) and this is the tough one: 5. Curt gets sexual favors as he needs them, which is pretty much always. (he's going to really miss Ivan)

The shisha, eh? That's funny. I had a girlfriend who went to the Peace Corp in Jordan and came back with a hookah, which I somehow acquired over the years. I still have some shisha (vacuum sealed) waiting for some good times. Email me when ya'll are in the area and we can enjoy some.

Cortez and the surrounding area is quite beautiful with a number things to do than climbing. Fly-fishing is great, mountain biking is good, several Indian ruins area close-by (Mesa Verde, Chaco...etc) close-by bouldering by the airport and check out the Silver Bean for your coffee fix. I like that part of the state, it seems like you can climb/boulder year round. Last time I there I went to a new bouldering area that was high on a ridge overlooking the beautiful Dolores River.

In reply to: Might I ask what in the sam hell you're moving to dolores for? OOPS!! I confused Dolores with Gateway(the dolores river flows through it). I spent about 2 weeks fighting a big wild fire based out of gateway, and I thought it was a weird little redneck town. Never been to (or through) Dolores. One area to check out is called sewnemup mesa...tons of sandstone first ascent's to be done. Welcome to colorado!! josh

Ophir Wall is not far, plus plenty of sport climbing near the falls at the end of the Telluride Valley. Naturita has some great bouldering, and there are plenty of second rate areas around. Look for the new routes in Paradox Valley!!! Sick climbing on beautiful wingate. INdian Creek is the best bet, just over 2 hours from you.

Well, it IS Colorado, and for this, I am jealous. I have toyed with the idea of moving to Boulder after I graduate (we already have the Sube, a sense of superiority over all the little people, and a retarded purebred dog) but that would require me to actually, um, finish school. Good luck!!

SW Colorado and the San Juans are my favorite place ever. Great skiing, climbing, mt. biking, fishing, kayaking, blahblahblahblah, everything. Durango has an awesome blues bar downtown. Mesa Verde is truly astounding. The best thing about that area--- Few crowds of people. Much unlike SoCal.

I would highly recomend Unaweep Canyon (Grand Junction) for bouldering. endless problems. I would be happy to show you around the area, if you want, just PM me. You could also easily take a day trip to Big Bend in Moab. Some of the sickest bouldering I have ever done. fun stuff.

You should be really stoked. You just moved to the best place in the world. (In my very biased opinion.) There is limitless climbing with limitless diversity. It is not all right in front of your face but really, that is what makes it so special. Not a lot of waiting to get on routes in this area. (Indian Creek and Caselton Tower excepted.) And the climbing scene is really alive these days. WELCOME.

For climbing info in the Telluride and "West End" areas, check out my website: http://www.charliefowler.com/climbing.html Included is info about the Falls Walls and Bear Creek near Telluride. Out West, there's info on Clay Creek, Naturita, Paradox Valley (lots of options), Sewemup Mesa, 16Z and Big Gypsum Valley. I hope this helps, and enjoy your new home! cheers, Charlie

SWEET Erica! Everyone has already given my suggestions. But let me add another vote for Unaweep. I've only been there twice but really enjoyed myself both times. Fantastic rock. Welcome to CO! Look me up when you get here. T

Charlie F.-Bob D'Antonio here. Aren't you a little too old to be hanging out on the internet? :D Hope you are doing well and life is good. Drop me a line or let's get out when you come to Boulder.

Bob D' - hey, what do you mean, I invented the internet. Thanks for the invitation. Same goes for you if you get down here. Also, I'd like to invite everyone to a slideshow I'm giving in Norwood on September 16, 7:30 pm at the Wright Stuff Community Foundation (1215 West Summit Street). It's a benefit for the new Norwood community climbing wall, donations are appreciated, and all proceeds go to the wall. I'm showing slides of local climbing spots, including familiar areas like Indian Creek, Moab and Ophir Wall/Cracked Canyon. The show will also feature many excellent new routes in those areas mentioned in my earlier post. cheers, Charlie

Martha~ Thanks for the welcome! The slopes are more Ivan's thing as skiing doesn't mix too well with bum knees. HOWEVER, I might just have to take up cross country and if I'm feelin' ballsy, I may be willing to jump on a board someday. Charlie~ Thanks agin for the advice and the welcome. We look forward to meeting up with you! Tracy girl! You, me, and Amber have to get together more often when I get up there. No more silly "$300 plane ticket" excuses.

erica ~ Unaweep...you've seen the book over breakfast... ( yeeha- we've been spared from sparing ) I ran across copy of Durango route book, out of print, let me know if u need a copy. Sounds to me like you moved into a fine stop-over for Ouray/Tell climbing. Perhaps we can get the AZ & Colorado contingent to meet at ur place - How large is your backyard, any bonfire-size restrictions in Dolores...?? note: I still have 1/2 a toasty room (thermostat = no limit) overlooking the hotsprings, available to the highest bidder for the Ouray Icefest. You could always just come and throw snowballs at us

Eric, I just sent you our new address. We close end of Oct. and will try and be up there every other weekend until Jan. or so when we can move up permanently. As well, you two have a place to stay in SW CO., or even just a place to crash on your way down to AZ!

Let's make some plans to hit up the gym next week and chat. :) And thanks for offer on the Icefest, but the snowballs sound like a betrer idea. I saw pics of last year's festivities and y'all were climbing much too smoothly. You guys could use some interference to make it a bit more challenging.

Erica and Ivan may not be near any climbing, but their house is cuuuuuuuuuuuuuuute. I am jealous. I'll just sit in my ghetto house that's falling apart and dream. :)

A lot of the climbing is in guidebooks you just have to look REAL hard. You need an overview book for New Mexico, one for Colorado, one for utah and one for arizona (kinda sucks livin in the 4 corners) Those 4 will give you an idea of the climbing around the area so you can go find local guide books like Durango sandstone or Telluride rocks. Also one of the best places to find areas around the 4 corners is in the back of the books in the "areas of honorable mention" Lots of underclimbed places mentioned. It a fun area, glad you are coming down here.

SW Colorado is one of the best places to live. Like others have said, you're not that far from IC/Moab. You might want to check out some of the places down around Los Alamos, NM for climbing. And you should give the ice climbing a shot. it is tons of fun.

She'll have to just come around on her own (climberchic). She'll get tired of throwing snowballs at us and have to try it out in Ouray for herself when she sees wer're having just so much fun..!!

 Kirra, too funny. I can see it now: Me throwing snowballs at all the funny ice climbers, then getting bored and thinking, "Hmmm...I can totally do that". Next thing I know, I'll be asking, "So I strap these sharp thingies where?" Come to think about it, that's exactly how I got into climbing. (Except replace the snowballs with taunting and the sharp thingies with "funny ballet slippers".) sparky~Thanks for the welcome! We'll buy first round at El Patio once we get up there for whatever locals are willing to come on out and meet us! Erica
