Sweet idea! You can compare viagra stashes and ear hair trimming techniques!

Seriously, I'm gonna crash. I'm 38, but my girlfriend is 18, so together we add up to well over the minimum age requirement.

I hate being called an old fart or an old geezer. Maybe I'm just in denial, because I turned 50 in February, but I don't feel so old in spirit or health.

Ron Olevsky gave me an "Old Geezer Kit" for my 50th birthday. Among the many items in the kit were Viagra (hey, I don't need that!), Grecian Formula (OK, so maybe I need alittle of this), Geritol (I drink beer, thank you) and Pampers (I don't even know why old people need them and I'm afraid to ask).

I'm getting junk mail from the AARP now, asking me to join. Sure, I'm 50 so I'm suddenly eligible, but I'm not ready to retire, really.

As for a gathering and such, maybe a fun idea but restricting it to 50 years or older is a total drag. "Sharing the secrets of being older and wisher" to whom? Those of us who are already older and wiser (more likely a jaded curmudgeon)? I'd much rather invite everyone to come and enjoy the climbing and conversation.

Charlie's right - 50 is too old for the cutoff. Now 40 makes more sense, or even 45.

I'm down for any gathering that involves bouldering, single malt and ganjatol.

I've been trying to think of comebacks agaisnt the whippersnapper faction in defense of us (almost) geezers -

I "dated MaryJane" before you were even born.
I was a punk before you were a punk.
I remember rock and roll before MTv.
I was climbing rocks while God was still making them.
I have more money, insurance and legal connections than you do.
With age comes expertise in guile, deceipt and dirty fighting.
If you don't behave - I'll call your parents.

OMFG, I'm rolling on the floor with these responses! Thank you all for a good laugh!

macherry, you're in, but then you have connections!

trophy bride sharing goes for guys AND gals, Jay. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

I have enough ibuprofin and naproxin to supply us all for a year of climbing. Doesn't mean I'm old, just means I'm not into pain unless there's vinyl attached.

I like the over 50 crowd because it means it will be small and (hopefully) mature. If there's enough interest from those young, 40-ish whipper-snappers, well, there's always room for Jello.

Anything younger, however, need not apply. :P

Well, over Labor Day weekend, BobD and I did figure out that (as we were burning all the little grommets off the boulders) we do have a combined age of over 100.

Yeah Curt! The best part of the first day of bouldering was Curt doing this B2 twice at the end of a long day of bouldering. Whatever hope of hanging the little gromments had was soon put to rest.

PS: They didn't show up for the next session!

PS: I am 51: easy to figure that one out.

I'll bring the Father Knows Best reruns, pass on the Geritol, move straight to the Kentucky Malt and sharing sounds great to me. OOps did I just say that  Instead of a silent auction on gear as is so fashionable now at major events we can offer, a years supply of Viagra, beat the solicitations with a pre-paid membership to AARP and sell fictitious plots at the Vertical World Memorial Gardens. Hell I feel old now, after all this that I might even bring an old Hemp rope to burn in memorium or is that smoke in memorium :?

When I first started (cough, cough, weez) we used hemp ropes and knew that if you had an unplanned bivy you could burn a bit off the rope end. (cough, weez) It didn't get you warm but the next morning you didn't REMEMBER that you were cold.
Nowadays the memory loss is more spontaneous, (weez, cough) but there is something to be said for tradition.
Hey Charley, so you have no idea what the diapers are for. Methinks thou dost protesteth too much...

Old Geezer gathering? I go climbing partly in the hopes of delaying such a thing. (Then I look around at who I'm climbing with...) The only thing more frustrating is climbing with people who should be geezers but aren't, like Donini.

I like the way some of the really young 'uns want to come out and play with the ancient ones. :)

I'll bet the newbie climbers don't know the sound that a rock hammer makes while banging in a piton and how you could tell if the piton is in solid.

Or climbing on Plymouth Cordage's Goldline rope and how scratchy it feels compared to kernmantle ropes.

Forget about what type of harness you have...how about just climbing with a swami belt?

How about 'a leader never takes a fall' cause you'll rip your guts out on a swami belt.

Royal Robbins and EB's...rock climbing shoes that is.

Some 'ancient' climbers still look (and climb) damn good!

Plus if you mix Advil with beer (or martinis), the pain just goes away. :)

now you're talking climb14er - everyone bring their old school gear. Shoenards, EBs, PAs or RDs (Kronhoffers for the truly ancient); a swami, no cams.

Painters pants optional.

Ropes less than 20 years old can be the exception to the old gear.

We'll do all the 5.6s and jibber all the way through.

mingus,
I still climb in Kronhoffers, but I think I might have shorty's try-focals. They work better at handling exposure than placing pro.

Remember when placing pro was something you did when repeating an existing route? When people did their first climbs on real rocks? When people could enumerate the strategies in The Art Of Climbing Down Gracefully? When the pied d'elphant was special footwear for victims of frostbite amputation? When a summit bonus meant that Armand Charlet would beat you until you reached the top?

Ah yes. Those were the days

Ohh man - am I so ready for this.

Dug through the attic and found a pair of Fires (high tops no less), some honest-to-god-before-the-lawsuit Coonyard nuts and biners (Black Diamond is so new age), and yes - a 20 year old rope - in neon colors even.

But the Coup de Grace was digging out a pair of Hind lycra tights from the bottom of the pack. Tight as hell and day-glo paisley too boot. Wolfgang's got nothing on me.

Break out the Cold Duck and the 8-tracks baby - it's party time :D

Very, very scary idea... but being 50 I'd be up for this.... you guys can use Goldline and tie in with a a bowline on a bight, put your hammer into that funky leather holster, and pull on your size 7.5 RR's... I'll bring my modern gear.

However, I still have long pieces of my '73 Chouinard "rattlesnake" rope if anyone is interested...

...my guess is everyone should bring their bottle of "vitamin-I" to satisfy the demand.

I only have black lycra tights that I wear for running and climbing 14ers in colder temps. I still have a pair of Woolrich wool knickers that I climbed many rock and alpine routes during the colder months. The Woolrich cotton knickers that I used to climb during the warmer months have gone the way of most cotton garments. Terminated.

I've never worn lycra for rock climbing let alone the day-glo and multi colored varieties of lycra. About as retro as I get is with my Woolrich wool knickers coupled with a very RARE Dachstein oiled wool sweater with buttons and full neck protection. I ski in this and snowshoe as well and the wool is the way to go. I also like the Sporthill fabrics for wind protection.

Aside from wool, the newer modern-day fabrics, ROCK.

Still, alcohol and advil made a wonderful combination. Being a DOUBLE Scorpio, I DO NOT need viagra. :)

Maybe you guys could raid BobD's wardrobe for nice shiny, nostalgic lycra attire...

No offense Bob, you're still a way harder man than me, even in pink lycra.

Now, I'm as fogey as anyone, but I don't remember those days at all. In my youth a pied d'elephant was something used to avoid becoming a victim of frostbite. Still got one in my attic somewhere. After my big-wall days ended, it saw use for awhile as a small child's sleeping bag.

Ok lets lower the age limit to 39, that way we will keep the real young ones out of this, and still accomodate young folks like you Mother_Sheep. But you have to promise not to show off your climbing skills to much!!

Yep ... the lil' one's just don't know how to mind their P's & Q's. Always wantin' to be with us ol' folks. Thought they'd learn when they turned 21! Was fine then, but now ... betcha' they wish they were 21 again!

Don't really understand why they would want to crash our party. When the sun goes down and the chill is in the air, those wipper-snappers will want to build a bonefire, turn up that damn music box real loud and go ta' jumpin' around the fire like savages whilst we are tryin' ta get some needed sleep. Don't sound like much fun for them ... does it?

I think it's really funny that the 'yung uns' want to come out an play with the 'older folks'. Why would they when they could be having fun with all the twenty somethings who don't know how to hold their booze and drink and puke that Jagger swill and they think it's cool.

Could it be that they want to see some of the retro gear of yesteryear?

Or do some of the twenty and early thirty somethings actually think that there could be some good looking, mature, fit and conditioned older men (and women) who are wiser, thoughtful, a little bit mature and who know what their partner really wants without having to lay out all the testosterone (and estrogen) to prove it?

Or do they just want to climb circles over our heads?

I just love it when I read the newbie twenty somethings saying they climb 5.11c SPORT (what the f*ck is sport btw) and then they have leg shakes five feet above their last pro on a 5.6 trad lead. This cracks me up.

Or do the younger climbers want a TROPHY older partner?

Inquirying minds want to know.

Well since so many want to join us in our quest for the hallowed title "older than dirt" I'll propose this. I just accumulated, two days hence, another notch on the belt (Yes I'm letting it out!) toward that holiest of grails.... I will offer up for auction my accumulation of excess prowess in following this earth ship around the sun. Shall we start the bidding.... No I don't drink Jaegger, trophy brides or partners perhaps, tenderly administered hot towels, carefully prepared chair by the fire, or better yet the best lie about my prowess on any given climb that my piers will likely beieve. Knowing only to well that 15 minutes from the telling they will have all foregotten.

RR,

While I've been on this board for some time, I don't post that often. And when I do, I never at all make any condesentions toward anyone, I never pick on anyone, and I never flame anyone.

With that said, the whole thread was geezer this and that and with all due respect to senior citizens of the universe, I do not consider myself a geezer. I don't look like one, don't act like one, and I certainly don't climb like an elder statesman...cause I'm not.

I've got my funny thoughts about yung 'uns and sometimes I'm correct in that assumption. Usually when testosterone, estrogen, certain types of alcoholic beverages are concerned.

BTW, some of us who are over fifty, and I'm barely over fifty, get discriminated against by the young twenty and thirty something hot chicks and we just 'grin and bear it'. It comes with the territory.

Thick skin is cool, BTW. It's also nice to everyone's ego to get hit on by the opposite sex every now and then. No matter what age is involved. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and climbing routes at thirty or fifty, it's the same route. Fair?

Fair?

fair enough...

i didn't intend to crash your thread or your party.

r.r.

p.s. every climber i have met or tied in with that has been a"geezer" (professed or otherwise) has taught me something. it's just for some reason none of them have chosen to live in southern indiana.

dont have the attention span(nor interest...comes with age)to read thru all the replies. remind the youngens that, tho we may be old and they have youth on their side, we get to retire in 10 years(or so). the young ones have to work for, oh i think, just another 40 YEARS!!!
i live for retirement. i think i'll rent my house out, live in the apartment i built in the backyard, buy a RV, tow my jeep, drink cheap wine and bbq everything that wont fall thru the grill. and NOT HAVE TO PUNCH A PHACKING CLOCK OR GET UP AT 0500 IF I DONT WANT TO!!! there are few benefits to being older. ya jes gotta look for 'em. one mo' thought. i dont mind getting older, i just refuse to get old.

Inquirying minds want to know.

i am sorry for my light hearted suggestion since it seems to make you so angry 14er...

but since you asked...

i haven't had any jaeger since college (10 years back)...

i do respect everyone and what they have to offer...regardless of age (my children, in fact, have taught me more than any college course)...

i have never sprayed about what i climb sport, trad, or ice...

and above all, i would never treat anyone with disrespect especially having never met them and basing my entire opinion on their age.

r.r.

Thanks Ron!

:D

Gee wiz my age calculation (r.r. method) is over 65 (I wont say what is was because it is down right depressing) and Mother_Sheep I could not even read that reply even with my bi-focals tilted way up so I could see real good through them.

Anyway I think an old Geezer only gathering is a great idea but maybe there is a way we can do both, that is, have an over 50s part and then an all age part. It is funny, when your young you wish you could get on in the years so you can do what the big and old folks can do but when you get there you wish you could be young again. GO Figure!!! :!:

Well shoot if we're going to stick with the under-50-need-not-apply rule then I guess this 46 year old boulderer has to find another gathering anyway...

Dang and here I had my wool knickers, painters' pants, AND garish lycra all ready to rock, each with period gear to match.

Along with a crash pad, chalk pot and expensive liqour (we weren't actually going to climb anything were we?). Can't pigeonhole the geezers that I know very easily...

Fun thread - I may have to break out some old gear for the Halloween comp this year.

Looking at the thread RC.COM Age Survey ( http://www.rockclimbing.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=27945 ) it looks as if there will be only 8 of us, if we all go. Where in Colorado were you thinking about climbing?

How about June 2005. WE can have the old geezers (over 50?, or 45?) on the 17th -19th and the Colorado Contingent (no age limit) the following weekend (24th through 27th) with some hard core alpine climbing or bigwall climbing inbetween.

Yo, if ya cant find good climbing in Colorado then where do you climb  The gathering suggestion for the old folks was for one weekend and the gathering for everyone (i.e. all ages) for the next. I want to go to both so why not stay in Colorado and do some real climbing during the week days between the two. Best of both worlds.

There's only one real place to climb in Colorado for a 'Geezer's Gathering'.

Eldorado Canyon.

With all respect to 'The Park'. Eldorado is also closer to the microbrewery next to Neptunes. :)

The only problem I see with Eldo is there is no camping. Although I am old and decrepit I still manage to sleep on the ground  . My vote is for some place camping is available, makes for a more communal weekend too! Lumpy, S. Platte, Shelf, or even Penetente.

Great choices Logman :!: Shelf is a great place for us flat landers to get used to the alttitude and get a lot of routes in in a hurry. How about Turkey Rocks as another alternative to choose from, is camping available there yet?

A geezer gathering must have a theme, assuming anyone can remember route names by the time June rolls around, here are some possibilities:

Eldo
- Over the Hill
- The Bulge
- Funeral March
- Grandmother's Challenge
- Shades of Gray
- Three Old Farts Young at Heart

Bould Canyon
- Aging Time
- Beano Hangover
- Men in Tights
- Mr. Sandman
- Nightcap

Clear Creek Canyon
- Generation Gap
- Old Man River

Lumpy Ridge
- Climb of the Ancient Mariner
- Living Dead
- Visual Aides
And the all time best route name in Colorado: **drum roll please**
- Magical Chrome Plated Semi Automatic Enema Syringe

Everyone can thank me later. No, really.

Tracy, chopped liver, NEVER. What am I is a question you must answer yourself. I could make a cpl flirtatious attempts but they would be inadequate. Looking forward to meeting you. Don't forget the marshmallows. I would climb with you too, if you take me up something easy.

Marge, You bring the coctails, I'll help you drink them. If you climb easy enough maybe we could tie ourselves together.

Eldo is a nice place to climb. I have been out there climbing, just not for a cpl. years. I used to stay at a friends house. I don't think there's any camping around. I think a place we can camp for the weekend would be nice. I would come for both weekends if that happens.

Dingus,

Just stumbled on to this - my partner and I are definitely looking for gigs that will keep motivating us to stay in shape now that Epi is behind us. This sounds like a good idea to me. I'd vote for Eldo but will leave that to you organizers to decide. I have a brother in Castle Rock so somewhere south would be fine as well.

I also like the doing an FA idea - was that FA as in "how many gathered old guys does it take to put up an FA..." or "how many FA's can a gathering of old guys put up..." I suppose that depends entirely on how much ganjatol you bring!

Count me in and I suspect my partner as well. Any idea on when the details might firm up...?

I just stumbled on this thread and am outraged that you would so lower the bar to include someone in his/her 50's in a Geezer Gathering. I'm sitting here watching a Public Television (KCET) special on the Carpenters and remembering ... ah, Karen ... What was I saying? Oh, yeah, you geezer wannabes. I propose that the 50-something kids host a weekend of ropegun services for us 60+ real geezers. According to the RC.com age survey there are 3 of us. (btw, a "geezer" is defined by the OED as "a term of derision applied to elderly persons.")

Then elderly, at dictionary.com, describes elderly as: "Being past middle age and approaching old age ...". If 50 is not past the middle of your years on this planet, then please, let us all know what you're doing right!

Anyway, I'm not sure if all us under 60 Geezers can pull anyone up a rock! :P Nice try ... Can't wait!!

Well, it'll be sometime in June. That's about all the commitment us old farts can make at this point in time!

skibabeage,

Not to be a drag, but is there anything we can do to help the planning along? Some of us are still pre-retirement workwise, [eventually] met extravagently tolerant women so have wives who need to know, and were late starters so have kids in school - and in this sorry state we need to get some dates on the books soon so everyone else in our lives can figure out when to party in our absence...

Where is less of an issues as when, but where would be good to pin down as well.

[ Oh, that and Dingus will need the time to arrange for a big ganjatol production run and that stuff needs to be administered within a day or to of harve...I mean manufacture (not to mention putting the development of ganjagra on a fast track). ]

I personally can make it any time in June, I just need to let others know so if you guys can pound out a date the works for most everyone then that will be good for me.

Any idea how many folks we might be talking about? Between PDX and MSP I suspect we can round up 4 or 5 (double that if the Smith contingent gets wind of it...).

Again, I'd vote for Eldo, but Garden of the Gods does have better wheel chair access...

Eldorado is fine for climbing, but it’s basically an urban park with no camping and not suitable for a gathering such as this. Lumpy Ridge has the problem of where do people gather at the end of the day. The campgrounds are spread out. You might want to consider Vedauwoo just over the border in Wyoming. Paid and free camping and a suitable variety of climbing (5.2-5.13) with fairly easy access. Also good for people with small kids: not much loose rock and no poisonous snakes. For those who don’t want to camp, Laramie is 16 miles away.

No offense, but I have to admit I'd be flying in for the climbing and in that neck of the woods Lumpy is a bit more altitude than this flatlander is up for on a quick visit and Vedauwoo would be way, way down on my list of areas to hit...

I and my friends mainly climbed Eldo and Boulder Canyons - I could never handle the prospect of those classic lines at Vedauwoo because everyone I met that had just come from climbing there had used up four rolls of tape and had all these little square tears down the length of their [new] blue jeans...

Heres an idea for all you geriatric stone grappling maniacs:
Because youre making this an age specific event, in the spirit of pure diplomacy between the older and the younger, i suggest you see what the cost of a big mega bus RV thing would be to rent for a weekend or so. they easily handle 10-20 people depending on the configuration(im talking tour bus size) and then you can go anywhere ya'll want to go. LIke a bunch of pre-snowbirds.
Either way, it might help keep the gum flappin to a minimum in the mean time and limit the possibility that any of us thar lurk the thread will get hit by a flying set of dentures that lost the pepsodent bond...

And you think any of us have either the visual capacity or the reflexes to be able to safely DRIVE the damned thing?

Boy, you REALLY don't know what it's like to be a geezer!

I sure dont, but then again Ma cherie, the people(snowbirds) that they sell those things to are old enough to be your parents. They must have some inertial guidance system and auto pilot like an A-6, because you dont hear about too many disasters when they die sleeping behind the wheel...;)
either way, thats an option id follow up on, you may find that you can split the costs and have a pretty hip swinging pad.....maybe even decked out like a 70s disco lounge to really make you feel young again

Exactly. After a certain number of years on this planet, it takes time find the reading glasses, next years' calendar, and a pencil.

It takes time to coordinate the doctors' appointments, the AARP meetings, and the seniors night discount buffets with climbing.

It takes time to acquire an adequate supply of Metamucil, Depends, Poly Grip, and Dentu-Cream for a week of climbing.

And finally, it takes time to warm up them durn high-fallutin' whiz-bang computers and sign on to the that G.W. or W.W.W. internet thingie and communicate with other people. Lordy, it was so much easier to do this on the party line when Aunt Maybel used to work at the phone company.

You old farts have commitments? I thought being old was about having the wisdom and experience to get OUT of them!

We can actually decide collectively when we'd like to have it - I know June 18 and 19 are probably out. How many days do we want this age-stravaganza to last before we're so worn out we can't even unking our joints to get out of bed in the morning?

Thinking maybe June 24-27? That's the weekend before the July 4th holiday, and unless we get another March dump of snow that prohibits any activity above 5000 feet, it could be pretty well cleared out for climbing. Shelf at least would be good, Penitente and the South Platte would definitely be in fine shape.

Thoughts?

I like that date, works for me. The earlier the date is known the better for me to book a cheap flight out to CO.

Well, it appears we've narrowed the gathering to somewhere in Colorado. Kiss off all the land east of I-25 (apologies to those who actually like Castlewood Canyon), and we're down to a mere 50,000 to 60,000 square miles of terrain. The state's climbing is covered by maybe 100 to 110 guide books (OK, 99 to 109 w/o Castlewood), so I don't see any reason why we should narrow the list. Just show up at a randomly-picked crag and climb!

Think about the possibilities:

Day 1 -- The Ophir Wall near Telluride. Climb 'til dusk, hop in the car, drive all night to Rocky Mountain National Park, and hit the Longs Peak parking lot at Oh-Dark-Thirty.

Day 2 -- After a brief 5-minute nap, grab the pack and hump the load of gear up to the base of the Diamond. Climb something hard (preferably off width) to get used to the altitude. Slog back to the car via headlamp, grab a burger in Estes Park, and head south for maybe 4 hours to Canyon City.

Day 3 -- Give yesterday's OW technique a rest by chasing bolts at Shelf Road. The crimpers, small pockets, and sharp holds will feel good. Trust me.

Day 4 -- Slab day in the South Platte. It will be mandatory that routes must include something ridiculously runout, with protection coming from rusty 1/4" button-head spinners with Leaper Z hangers. Consider this the "rest" day.

Day 5 -- After a casual 3 hour drive from a Platte River campsite, it's Eldo day. Leave the big cams from the Diamond behind -- it's time for two sets of stoppers and your small cams. Bring lycra (or Prana, if you must) and strut yer stuff.

Day 6 -- A breakfast of Boulder's best high-test coffee, then crank up the Chevy for a 200-mile romp on I-70 to Rifle. After the last five days, we'll all be lean, mean, climbing machines. Who cares if we struggled on the 5.10 OW on the Diamond? A tightly bolted 5.13 can't be that hard. Can it?

Day 7 -- Open for a vote. Could be a travel day for some, or maybe a day at RMNP's Lumpy Ridge. For those who can't get enough multi-pitch OW, Lumpy has a few options.

There ya go, Marge -- the perfect itinerary. Perfectly insane.

I dare anyone to make something more suitable. Really.

Day 1 (10:00am): Survived the stiff approach to the Pearl Bakery to gear up.

Day 1 (10:30am): Roll into Gary's shop to replace the gear I forgot to pack (and look at really old gear I used to use).

Day 1 (11:30am): Finally down to Eldo - don't recognize anything on the approach or how to deal with this new State Park business I've heard so much about.

Day 1 (12:30am): Recognize the Bastille. Consider the Northcutt Variation, but decide to just rope solo the Bastille Crack and see if any of this seems vaguely familiar.

Day 1 (01:00pm): Still trying to decide whether to use the Yosemite Roped Solo technique or a grigri and small pack for the rope - decide on YRS as old school and for the decorative effect of the many long rope loops hanging from my harness...

Day 1 (01:30pm): Finally organized and ready to climb, would take a hit off a dube but I forgot a lighter; the two parties of young people waiting in line realize something old and peculiar is in the air anyway and offer to let me start ahead of them.

Day 1 (01:45pm): After watching me for 15 minutes the two parties of deferential young people and everyone else at the base has scattered out of site of the Bastille to climb anywhere but here. Something apparently really doesn't smell right...

Day 1 (02:30pm): It dawns on me it's been awhile since I've done this and that could be why it's taken me 45 minutes to do the first pitch and now I have to go to the bathroom really bad.

Day 1 (03:00pm): Fail to remember you have to go back across the slab at the end of the third pitch and instead move up to the top of the slab out on the face and head up the slightly overhanging corner slot.

Day 1 (03:13pm): Am thirty five feet out with no pro attempting to pull up into a mantle but every time I try I'm confronted with a rurp that has rusted into a flakey pyramid with some flapping white threads out the top.

Day1 (03:14pm): Downclimb one move, arm bar - first piece is too big; second piece is too big - this isn't good. Realize I am not in Kansas anymore or anywhere near the Bastille Crack; begin to panic, hyperventilate, and the sewing machine is creeping up just past my knees heading for my abdominals; I feel like pissing and fainting.

Day1 (03:15pm): In a last stumbling attempt I finally get a small wired Peck in a crack end for end and fall while clipping - rope falls in, not out of biner.

Day1 (04:40pm): Have rapped the route, I am attempting to slink down the road in the shadows hoping absolutely no one from the Old Geezer bus was any where near the Bastille this afternoon.

Day1 (11:00pm): Finally located the Old Geezer Gathering by following the steady stream of young women away from a certain dark pub. Every now and then I'd lose the way but a car of them would go by and they'd point back behind them and give me the finger. I knew I was close...

Day2 (03:00am): Too drunk to once again recount the tale of the day's daring solo ascent of Wide Country, so off to bed with that last svelte young blonde with true grit (and tracks) who has been so captivated with my tales of ancient glory.

Day2 (12:30pm): Damn, the Old Geezer bus left without me again! Blonde is nowhere in sight, but there is a note that says something about viagra next time, but goes on to say there will never be a next time. Check in with my wife and see how things are going at the spa and if she had dropped Sally off at her probation officer for her last meeting so charges will be wiped clean.

Day2 (01:00pm): Spot another hung over loser, I mean Geezer, getting coffee and after swapping resumes of lies for about 5 minutes we decide to hitch back out to Eldo and do the Naked Edge (to be cont'd...)

One of the more memorable tidbits of advice I received from dad during the formative years was, "Son, if you're not in bed by midnight, you might as well come home."

Which brings me to a related point:

Nowhere in these lines do a see any statement which comfirms that the svelte young blonde is female. Boulder is, well, sometimes a different town. It's even been called the Eugene, Oregon of Colorado. Not that I understand what that really means. To each his own. But at 3am in a climber's bar, you just might want to be certain that the tall, cool drink of water at your table is the mix you ordered.

Day 2 (04:30pm): Taking a long break from our 9th attempt at the first pitch of the Edge - would respond in kind, but I'm too tired and confused to "Get Shorty" for his unwarranted and scathing innuendo relative to both my sexuality and ability to hold onto my water in a tight situation...

[P.S. There are no Porsches in Eugene and the bud doesn't dry out nearly as fast there - how could anyone possibly confuse the two...?]

Just a quick note here. Around Boulder, you might have a better shot at attracting the svelte, nubile, blond nymph if you state you're on your "9th lap" rather than "9th attempt" of The Edge.

I know nothing about Colorado, except the Springs area. Will we be staying/climbing near Boulder? Got a friend there I'd like to see while I'm out there, if we'll be close enough.

***ahem***

What's this WE stuff. Homie don't need no little blue pills to assist the hydraulics.

OK, so sometimes I use another little blue pill after a hard day of climbing -- it's called Alleve -- but that's a different issue.

And how would you know they're blue?
Believe it or not, some of us actually watch TV ads. After a seeing a number of Super Bowls, it's not too difficult to realize the "little blue pill" is Viagra.

And I still think one of the funniest ads was when Bob Dole said how he likes his "little blue friend" and it turned out to be a can of Pepsi. I think I sprayed a mouthful of Pepsi through my nose onto the pizza on that one. My buddies didn't care much for my reaction, but I did have first dibs for the pepperoni for the rest of the game.

Curt,

Ah, then you ARE old and smart enough to know better about that foot belay business. And, tsk, tsk, tsk - given a profound proclivity for taking [technical] liberties and your obvious creative zeal I don't even want to imagine what you might consider "safe sex" these days, but I suspect there must be a nasty foot [fetish] involved somehow... :D

Sweet idea! You can compare viagra stashes and ear hair trimming techniques!

Seriously, I'm gonna crash. I'm 38, but my girlfriend is 18, so together we add up to well over the minimum age requirement.

UB

Dude, you know that you could start a religion or something, I mean cmon, what 38+ yo guy wouldnt pay to find out what and how and when to do the things you need to do to get an 18yo GF. Man you could write even a crappy book on it and guys would buy it like anti hair loss cream....
I can give you that little piece of info. - act like you're totally into yourself don't give a f... about the girl you're with and only an 18 year old will be attracted to you. Any "woman" probably is completely bored by someone like that so he can only get an 18 year. Note that 18 year olds frequently haven't figured out what to do with what they've got - totally don't know what to do with what you've got and are highly into drama. Those of us who are fully matured and have completely discovered our stash of overly abundant hormones prefer men who know all that, know what to do with what we've got, and appreciate the talent that comes from years of experience. "We can always get ..." as one fully mature man I know describes a woman's ability to engage in the finer arts.
I might crash the party but at 41 I might just qualify as and Old Geezer - led the third first and second pitches that the teenagers balked at today.
Going climbing again tomorrow and the next day and the next and....

Hey Martha...

I will probably have passed my state exam and will be a CNA by the time y'all get together. Should I come along to monitor blood pressure, change bedpans and assist with feeding?

Dang,

You folks are getting me interested in this gathering. I'm an "old" Colorado climber. I've only been at it (technically, with ropes) for 35 years, but bouldering since I was five (or 47 years). Put me on your list, please.

I must give skibabeage the credit for my signature.

As for the gathering, the company I work for, Tally Systems Corp., has just been purchased by Novell. Since then, they moved me up to Engineering and the rollout for the product conversion with ZENworks is the 24th of June. I'm not sure how this will affect my traveling plans. I may have to put this one off ... bummer.

I need to be in Barstool (Barstow), California from 6 to 17 July. I'm contemplating something in the Sierra, Red Rocks (yes, I know it's hot), or Colorado then maybe driving on east to the gathering.

Three questions:

1) What would be my approximate drive time from Vegas to Denver (I'll adjust to the final destination from there).

2) Anyone else heading to Colorado from near Barstow or Vegas ?

3) If I decide to come to Colorado right after work (on the 17th or so), does anyone want to play somewhere in western Colorado or between Barstow and Denver during that week ?

Activities could included climbing, hiking, or mountain biking.

Keep in mind I'm woefully out of climbing shape and nursing a bad shoulder (that means mid-tens max for following, less for leading.

Thanks,

Tim

I told ya earlier I would be there. I think my plans are changing a little. Instead of flying, I'm driving and two of my pa. friends will be with me. They are both old enough. One 51 maybe and the other 11 years older than me and they tell me I'm older than dirt.

Those who don't meet the age requirement for the gathering are certainly welcome to join, but they will have to take on servile roles, i.e., changing bedpans, pushing wheelchairs, taking BP, wiping snotty noses and the like.

Still interested?
Wow -- pretty exciting activities. Hold me back! But it will be a tough choice between these stellar functions and:
- Running naked through the cholla cactus reserve at a J-Tree N.P.
- A prostate exam.
- Smacking grizzly cubs around in Glacier N.P. while mamma bear watches.
- Watching a 24-hour continous loop of Anna Nichole Smith's weight loss info-mercials.

So many options, so little time.

We are also contemplating offering root canals without anaesthesia.
Root canals? You mean some of the gathering members still have teeth?

Now that you mention it Skibbi, where will we be meeting? Since I am not an "Ironbutter" and can't leave Oregun until the day before the gathering I will be trying to hook up on the second day of the event. I figure I'll just start making laps on your great roads with my scooter from RMNP on the north to Durango on the south. I'll drive until I find the row of walkers parked along side the road. I will bring my walker it will be the one with the bright green tennis balls on the front legs.

A little warning about Frank. . .he thinks every route is "GREAT!!!!!" And I think that's GREAT!!!

You lucky folks in Colorado just take things so much for granite. Man cant wait to be out there with all you great folks. Cologman and I will be hanging for a week so .... lets do some climbing!

There's been talk about Turkey Rocks - good camping, local, old skewl. It'll probably be less crowded than Eldo. And S. Platte isn't too far away in case anyone wants to rocket power the walkers and jet off to another area.

Please Please let it be Turkey! Granite and Crack climbing, yea baby. Also the elevation will give me a chance to acclimate before I tackle some nice Alpine routes in Rocky Mountain with Cologman.

It's anybody's guess who of the CC will be at the OGG at TR. This is a pretty independent group.

HOWEVER, it will be at Turkey Rocks. If the climbing there isn't adequate, there's the SPLATTE and other outlying areas.

I don't know if I can go anymore. My new roommate guessed I was 37.

its okay skibs, as i was goofing off on a friend's longboard skateboard this weekend on mainstreet, a young kid walked by with his mom and said, "what's that lady doing on a skateboard?, She's too old".
:)
that makes me older

Just throwing this out there so no one else worries about it 8^) . I'll provide the makings for fire over the weekend. I produce a preponderance of firewood so this will be a good chance to burn a bit up. Frank this is a heads up, one of our chores before we leave on our marathon is to load up with wood, no big deal though.

You da man, Jeff. Shoot, after Ms. Barton BBQ'd those 138,000 nasty tree-filled acres of the Platte, there's hardly a dry stick of wood in the area. What's a camper to do?

(Just giving you some crap. Actually, that's a good idea. Ever consider being a part-time, permanent forest service employee on fire patrol?)

From a logistics stand point 11 Mile makes the most sense. It does offer more than just the Canyon if you want to drive a bit and the camping is the best available. Skibs you ought to check on Goup Site there.

I think that's going to be a better choice, then if folks want to head up to Turkey it's not that far away.

So, 11-mile it is. Then we can join zozo in the Pounderthon in Colorado Springs.

Yahoo I'll be passing by 9 mile to 10 mile to .... 11 mile Just 5 days to go from the start of the big odyssey to the Rocky Mountains.

No, it's at Riverside. There are four campgrounds on the way to 11-mile reservoir, and Riverside is the first one.

Hey Skibs save me and Cologman a spote too!

I leave tomorrow (6-21) for Colorado. So I will be in Colorado Wednesday night, God willing. This will be the longest (car) road trip I have taken totally on my own! Sounds like we have a lot of things happening, in Colorado this week! I really am looking forward to seeing all my good climbing friends in the Rocky Mountains :D :D :D :!:

Was in 11-Mile today. The river is quite low and there is a wild madfly hatch going on. Bring your fly rod. There were also some flesh-eating flies flying everwhere making it almost impossible to boulder near the river. I will be down on Sunday and staying through Monday. Hope to see you all!

Trying not to hit the panic button here, but DOES ANYONE HAVE AN 11-MILE GUIDEBOOK WHO'LL BE THERE TOMORROW EVENING?

Damned if I can't locate one anywhere, even at Chessler.

I ordered a copy of D'Antonio's from Amazon last Friday evening and it just arrived in the mail today. I also have a copy of Green's Climbing Colorado. How much should I charge people to let them use the books?

Oh great, Bob talks me into coming to 11 Mile, and now I find out there's going to be a bunch of old farts gumming up the routes.

Don't worry, we'll be climbing the harder routes that you can't do anyway.

Curt

Curt, I'm talking about climbing, not pebble humping. You won't be in my way 5 feet off the deck.

I do routes too, babe........5.12 trad........

sukit.

Amazing what you can do photoshop these days. :D

On a another note. There has been some major new development at 11-Mile in the last 5 years. Lots of bolted sport routes and some trad.

The old routes in the higher grades (5.11-5.12) are quite hard and gear can be quite hard to place. Some routes on 11-Mile Dome have been re-bolted and have lost the long runouts that use be so typical of this rock.

Feel free to contact me if you need any info on new or old routes.

Curt,

Molly has been talking about you and can't wait to see you again.

Yeah, spraymeister, but I doubt you can climb that hard unless you're wearing pink lycra.

Well, that must be what happened--lycra went out of style so I became a boulderer.

Hey, that's great Bob. Please tell Molly that I miss her too--and that I'm bringing her a bagful of California Avocados next week.

after an hour flight delay in Denver and a 2 1/2 hr. drive home from Spokane, fueled by shitty 7-11 coffee, listening to the Cramps and the Dead kennedys, dodging semis and deers, I finally made it home at 3:30am pacific time. No rest for the weary!!!

Anyways Fantastic time

Skibs: amazing host, your hospitality and generousity was overwhelming. Thanks for dragging my sorry ass up that 14er. I know i didn't say much when it was over...........exhausted and starved...........but it was very cool. Hey did we spend more time driving or climbing........it's a saw-off!!! Thanks for organizing this great event.

Charley and the PA boys: what a bunch of sweethearts. Always making me smile. Nice climbing with you guys. Charlie anytime you're ready to be my pool boy..............come on up!!!

Bobd: jeezus i've never known someone so opinionated and who never shut up.........i guess that's what made you so endearing. it was great climbing with you. Are you sure our feet are the same size, the approach shoes seem to fit a tad bigger after you borrowed them!!!!!!!!

Colorado contingent: Nice putting faces to usernames. Nice friendly bunch of folks. Great climbing with Kcrag.......fuck that woman can climb!

Special hugs for Shorty, he had me in stitiches thursday night and sunday night at drfter's diner. I would love to ski with you some day!!!

Nice meeting everyone else who popped by or shared our camping area.

colorado is a beautiful state and i've already told bruce he should be looking for a transfer to the area, so i can be a climbing/ski bum in colorado

Marge - glad you enjoyed your stay in our little neck of the woods. Next time you're here we should try to schedule some climb time at "he whose name cannot be said."

As for the skiing thang, just holler and we'll try to coordinate schedules. I can pretty much guarantee I'll return to B.C. in '06 or '07, but it will probably be for "rock star" skiing. It's such a nasty habit -- you should try it some time.

Curt,

You now what happened last time you tried to get close to Molly.

Marge,

You are way cool and a blast to hangout with. Next time we get to hangout just keep it down a little bit. You almost got us kicked out of the campground. Beer and wine don't mix. You should know that at your age!

Isn't she the radness?! And Bob may talk at least as much as me, but I hafta say, his smack talk kills mine (lo, I am young and green, and not from Philly). Good thing I am not NEARLY old enough to have attended. I'm just snooping here. I'll try to crash the thread if nothing else tho.

Did Jeff/logman tear it up? That's one strong, fun old geezer :)

Curt, I wasn't even potty trained when that photo was taken, c'mon ;) You repeat the feat next season (white pants, slider nut in teeth and all) and I will second you. We got a date?

Charley, assuming that these ancient fartz weren't too feeble to snap the shutter, and that said photos do in fact, exist, you might look for them over in say, "Partners- East Coast".

Overamping on Geritol (so I hear), often produces disorientation (not to mention delusions of significant exaggeration) after coming down, and there's no telling where those pictures might be.

Alternatively, you can wait for the mists to clear, many times Alzheimer patients experience random periods of lucidity in between their separations from reality as us much younger types know it.
