A climber fell to his death today in LCC. He was climbing what looked to me was the west ridge of Mt. Superior. If that was the route they were on it is about 5.4 depending on what route they were on. Dan Richter was climbing with Andrew Mclean at the time of his death. His family was in the canyon when his body was brought down. He was helipoctered off. My sympathy goes with the family and his friends. I don't have the exact details, but would also extend my sympathy to Andrew as well

That is horrible news. I send my condolences also to all family and friends. It is a very sad thing when we lose another life in this very difficult world of ours. Especially one who obviously enjoyed life by experiencing outdoor activities -- like all of us. This really hits home. Sad! My next climb is for him.

Climbing with Andrew Mclean... the author of "Chuting Gallery"? Very perplexed about this, Mclean is one of the most accomplished ski mountaineers around, he knows his stuff. How did this happen? Does anybody have more info?

Here is the news article from the Deseret News, a paper here in Salt lake. There was a pic but I can't get it to attatch.

"Life Flight airlifts the body of a rock climber who fell approximately 150 feet to his death early Wednesday morning. Daniel Rector, 46, was climbing about 5:30 a.m. with a friend on the west slope of Monte Cristo just above Snowbird. The two men were free climbing, meaning they did not use ropes. Rector apparently lost his footing and fell, said Salt Lake County sheriff's deputy Peggy Faulkner. He suffered massive head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Faulkner said Rector was a very experienced climber and was known locally among people in the climbing community. Rector is the son of Elder Hartman Rector Jr., emeritus member of the Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints."

With deepest sympathy I send my condolences and this quote - that it may bring comfort to all in this time of sorrow. My prayers go out to all who knew him.

For certain is death for the born,
And certain is birth for the dead;
Therefore over the inevitable
Thou shoulst not grieve...
[For]birthless and deathless and
changeless remaineth the spirit for ever;

The Bhagavad Gita

The news paper is wrong, it was Mt. Superior and i was told they weren't rock climbing but hiking. It is a horrible thing nonetheless...

I have “hiked” most of the ridgelines between Millcreek Canyon and BCC, BCC and LCC and LCC and American Fork Canyon. As I started technical climbing this season I’ve realized what a fine line there is between class 4 scrambles and lower level class 5 “scambles” up there, and the exposure is so sever. Typically you have ascended almost 5000’ in about 4 miles to hit the ridgelines, which are 10-11k – lightheadedness from elevation, exertion, dehydration, and lack of carbs is common, combine this with lots of loose rock and hundreds of feet of exposure. If you are “hiking” in these areas – always remember the 3-point rule when you hit the class 3 and 4 stuff. My condolences to the family – what a tragedy.

All this talk about 4th or 5th class, hiking is bullshit. I SAW where he was getting air-vaced and I know it was above some tecnical rock (5.3,5.4).

too bad. My condolences to everyone involved.

Now I'm going to rant on the goddamned deseret news.

quote:
"The two men were free climbing, meaning they did not use ropes."

Anyone see what's wrong with this? This misuse of terminology is EXACTLY what gives climbers a bad name. Anyone agree?

Here's the whole article from the Salt Lake Tribune.

Mountain Fall Kills Former Sunstone Publisher
Thursday, September 5, 2002

Daniel Rector
BY KEVIN CANTERA
THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE

After Daniel Rector fell nearly 200 feet to his death Wednesday while hiking a beloved peak in Little Cottonwood Canyon, friends and family members dealt with their grief by focusing on his life.
"He did it all. . . . He had a real passion for life," said his sister, Lucy Morey. "He was a family man and he loved to do anything outdoors."
Rector left home at about 4:30 a.m. for a hike on Monte Cristo peak, north of Snowbird. He usually went early in the day so he could spend time after work with his family, Morey said.
Rector, 46, was a seasoned hiker and knew the peak well, Morey said. He and friend Andrew McClain were traversing the ridge up to the 11,132-foot peak without ropes or other specialized equipment when Rector lost his footing and fell at about 6:45 a.m., said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Peggy Faulkner.
McClain ran down the slope and summoned help. A LifeFlight helicopter crew recovered Rector's body. He died of massive head injuries, Faulkner said.
"They were both very experienced. They knew the risks," said Faulkner, adding that the peak is often attempted by free climbers.
Rector is the son of Hartman Rector Jr., an emeritus member of the First Quorum of the Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
From 1986 to 1991, Daniel Rector was publisher of Sunstone magazine, an independent and often controversial periodical aimed at LDS intellectuals.
"He had this pluck and self-confidence which was just incredible," said Elbert Peck, who was the editor under Rector and succeeded him as publisher.
The last time Peck saw Rector was at the Sunstone Symposium in August.
"He looked the best I have ever seen him in my life. He had an inner peace about him," Peck said.
Rector leaves behind a wife and four children.

I climbed for Dan Rector last night as promised. I lead my first Sport lead with my friend "jhundrup" instructing. He did a great job. In honor of Dan, I made it to the top bolt first time thru on a 5.9 -- no whippers. Nice! What a rush. We'll always remember you Dan.
CLIMB ON!!!

Who cares if he was hiking or climbing? Someone died, and that's what matters. Like his fam and others said he had a zeal for life. It was someone enjoying life and what it had to offer and he is no longer with us. I only hope that his zeal for life can be passed to others. My sympathies.

Geese Tyler, what's your problem? – Especially on a thread like this. Most class 4 scrambles along the Little Cottonwood canyon ridgeline “Hikes” are above class 5 terrains, Many of them over high level class 5 – that’s what actually makes them class 4 – the exposure with real fear of death. Now I’m still a Gumby in class 5 and yet I would challenge a very experienced climber to show me the delineation between a class 4 scramble and a 5.2. My remarks were intended to the hundreds of hikers/scramblers that have no intention of “free climbing” 5.x, but are just out for that hike/scramble that they have done so many times before. Or even for the technical climber who is down climbing that 5.4 (it’s just a scramble) to find the rap anchors.
